(Abovel King (801, shown here In heatrace action, was forced to switch from his factory H-D 550R to the older, Rotax-based single before the main event. He was fast no matter what. they hit turn three, and he was never seriously challenged. At the end of lap one, King held a strong lead over Poovey, Smith, and Stanley. At the end of lap two, Smith had grabbed second over Stanley, Kopp, Durelie, and Schnabel, as Poovey dropped back to seventh. On lap three, Tyer endoed into the turn-three haybales while running midpack. Two laps later, as the pack was heading toward the red flag, Rogers and Vincent tangled and displaced more hay bales in turn three. "Rogers drafted under me going into three" Vincent said. "It looked like he got in too hot, tapped his brake, and lowsided. I had nowhere to go, and he took me down with him." Scoring was reverted to the completion of the second lap for the single-file restart. Rogers and Vincent made the restart. Tyer was later diagnosed with a broken shoulder. King, Smith, Stanley, Kopp, and Durelle headed the single-file restart. (Left) Jennifer Snyder wound up fourth on her factory Hartey after some lastlap shuffling with several riders. six, Brown clawed his way up to the leaders, passed West, and set his sights on Rogers as they charged toward the white flag. Brown overcooked turn one and lost touch with Rogers, but West got a great drive out of turn two to get one last shot for the win. West pulled even in turn four, but his inexperience in the draft enabled Rogers to hold on for the win. Brown headed to the lastchance qualifier. Trent Bailey, Murray, Merle Scherb and Beattie led the second Pro Singles semi into turn one. Murray claimed the top spot a lap later, then gave way to Scherb. Murray led the four-rider scramble into turn three on the final lap, only to be passed by Bailey up in the cushion. Bailey led off four, but Murray drafted past for the win. Beattie and Scherb were headed for the LCQ. The last-chance qualifier provided some of the best action of the evening. Brown, Scherb, Matt Burton and Matt Wait charged into turn one as the green light flashed, but they would be unable to break away. As Brown and Scherb swapped the lead back and forth, Pankey and Brian Vincent slowly closed the gap. On lap six, the six-rider battle for the lead drafted four-wide into turn one, with Scherb emerging from turn two with the lead over Wait. Brown led the pack into turn three on the final lap, but Vincent drafted past for the win at the line. Both went to the main, while Wait, Scherb, Pankey, and Burton were done for the night. Extensive track work done prior to the main events removed all traces of the narrow groove, thereby providing a consistent cushion racetrack from top to bottom. Durelle later com- mented: "I went out there expecting the one-line groove I had in my heat race. But I hit turn three and - whoa it was a different story. It was good, though". King chose to start on the far outside of the front row. Poovey, Smith, Durelle, Kopp, and Tyer lined up to his left. Stanley, Snyder, McCoy, McDermitt, Schnabel and Pegram lined up in row two, with Bailey, West, Vincent, Rogers, Brown, and Murray rounding out the field on row three. King grabbed the holeshot from the pole position and, for ali intents and purposes, the win was his. He had already broken the draft before (Right) Reigning champion Terry Poovey climbed back to the top of the championship leaderboard lifter finishing sixth. eyellll n eVIl's • AUGUST 21,2002 41
