z o en ~ w ~ ~ ~ :I: "- Honda Hills: Former World Champion Jeff Smith rode his BSA to the victory in the Over 60 Expert class at round 11 of the AHRMA National MX Series in Thornville, Ohio. here longer than at any of its other venues. With the number of entries approaching 300, it is obvious that racers love the wellgroomed, challenging track. Even when it pours. And that is precisely what it did during round II of the AHRMA Vintage motocross series. No matter: The racing was close throughout the day, even though wet, muddy conditions contributed to a high attrition rate. More often than not, precipitation and old motorcycles are not desirable combinations. But some riders thrive when conditions get tough. Take Honda CR rider Bill Nazelrod, for example: An Expert-ievel rider in the tough Sportsman 125cc class, Nazelrod, of Ellicott City, Maryland, got a holeshot in the muddy first moto and held off a detennined pack of competitors, including the reigning class champion, Ohio's Mark Weaver, on a 1974 Suzuki TM, and Richard Hart, another Ohio rider, on a mud-obliterated '74 Honda Elsinore. "It's a tough way to stay clean," said Nazelrod of staying in front. "Those guys were on me the whole time." But the rain stopped prior to the second set of motos, and Weaver quickly located a dry line to his liking. Goodbye, Suzuki. With his second-moto victory, Weaver got the overall win, followed by Hart and Nazelrod. When it comes to foul-weather experience, no one can beat Jeff Smith. A two-time World Champion in the 1960s, Smith put on a mudriding cHnic on his way to a 1-1 victory aboard a 1970 BSA in the Over 60 Expert class. Smith, now living in Wausau, Wisconsin, was a factory rider for BSA in his native England. Corky Root of Spring Lake, Michigan, finished second on a Bultaco. In the Women's Novice class, Tammy Rilzheimer-Mount of Highland, Illinois, showed why four-strokes are the weapons of choice on a muddy track. She powered her 1964 BSA to 1- 1 wins, ahead of Amy Douvlos on a Suzuki TM125. Racing against the guys, RilzheimerMount also won the Premier 500cc Novice class aboard the same BSA. Los Angeles County Raceway Hoover Cleans Up at CRC Motocross By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, JULY 27 Steve Hoover and his Rommell Machinebacked Honda were nearly perfect in the 250cc Novice class, going 1-1 for the win at Los Angeles County Raceway during California Racing Club's Saturday night motocross. CRF450R-mounted Joshua Hall won the drag race to the first tum in moto one to lead Brad Goolsby, Hoover and Travis Anway. Goolsby controlled the pace out front after a lap, with Hoover, Hall and Anway keeping close tabs on the YZ250 rider. Hoover outjumped Goolsby for the lead on lap three and immediately started to inch away. Hoover got to the checkers first, with Anway putting a last-lap move on Hall for third. Goolsby finished a close fourth, ahead of Brett Palmer. Moto two was all Hoover's, as he absconded with the holeshot and continued on uncontested for the double-moto sweep. Hall and Anway went at it over second place again, with Hail prevailing by the siimmest of margins to earn the second-place trophy. Goolsby and Palmer finished in fourth and fifth, respectively. Alyssa Prince split moto wins with her brother Kyle for the 65cc Beginner-class overall honors. Chris Carrillo battled with the Prince duo to go 2-3 for third on the night, followed by the 4-4 score of Dalton Zahrt and the 5-5 tally of Jake O'Donnell. Kyle Jenkins ran off with the 125cc Novice first-moto victory, ahead of Daniel Hendrix and Jared Whitlaw. Hendrix dogged Jenkins relentlessly throughout moto two, making him n e _ OS Los Angeles County Raceway: Steve Hoover was the 250cc Novice winner during CRC Saturday night motocross action in Palmdale, California, work much harder the second time out. Ricky Barger went 4-3 to top the 5-4 score of Jess Drake for third overall. Corey Wolff led every lap of the opening 125cc Beginner moto. Adam Lane slowly reeled in Wolff to pressure him on the last lap and finish a close second. Third went to Anthony Ducato, with Mike Hearns holding off David Boyle for fourth. Wolff returned to ace the second moto, this time ahead of Ducato. Jan Pontanilla, on a visit ;from Hawaii, taught the boys a thing or two en route to her third-place finish and fourth overall, behind Boyle (5-4). Results PfW BEG: I. Jonathan Shllnis (KTM)j 2. Wild Horse Saloon Allen Accepts Accolades By DEBBIE A1ll:N NASHVILLE, TN, JULY 14 If one could pick a theme for this season, then "A Change Will Do You Good" would be on the top of the list for the Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series. The AMA/Virelli '!'ire/Varts Unlimited/Moose/White Brothers-sponsored series witnessed many changes this year, so when MSWS director Scott Horton and his Wife, Kathy, sU9gested having a banquet at a new location, the people said, "Why not?" Nearly 400 people piled into Nashville's historical Wild Horse Saloon to celebrate the top five from 31 classes. They received trophies and lots of prizes. It had been a long, hard season, due to record turnouts that averaged 475 riders. Still, they were up for the challenge, as they made their way across Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and Alabama. And now it was time for a celebration. This year's number-one plate went to P.A. Allen. He was consistently fast and smooth, and he rolled into the Mid-South AA Championship with honor, winning six of the 11 races and not settling for anything less than third. "I really appreciate the Mid-South series and the support of my sponsors," said the Team Green Kawasaki/Sarge's Cycles/Oakley/GPR/Moose-supported Allen. "Mark Hosbach [a Kawasaki representative] started backing me when I was 15 years old. Robert Patterson from Sarge's Cycles and Steve Ezell from Pro Action of Kentucky have given me many years of support, and I'm thankful to win for them. " At the start of the series, Allen claimed first-place finishes at the first four events. During the midseason slime, he decided a change of color would do him good. At the Batey Farm race, he picked up a Team Green Kawasaki ride. He manhandled his KX250 into first piace overall. At the 10th round, he did it again and clinched the series overall. "I appreciate my dad, mom and sister they're my pit crew," Allen said. "I also appreciate the Mid-South series because of the atmosphere. Everyone's friendly, and the promoters layout great tracks." Dustin Gibson and Gary Hendricks came in second and third overall. Flying on his Suzuki, Gibson won the 250cc/Open A class and came in first overall at two rounds. He also had two seconds, four thirds, and one fourth-place finish. "My favorite race was round five [Memphis Motorcycle Club] when I came In first overall: said Gibson. "I like it muddy, and I charged from the beginning of the race to the end." After one win and a second in the 250cc/Open A class, Hendricks changed classes and moved into the AA class at Crab Orchard in Illinois. "I took a year off from racing because I smashed my ankle on a tree in Okeechobee," he said. "At the start of this season, I didn't feel comfortable enough to ride at the AA pace, so I entered 250cc/Open A and slowly worked my way back up to the faster pace. I
