Jacki Hudson took the holeshot in the first moto and kept the point position for one lap until she fell and handed the lead to Sarah Whitmore. Sau had a midpack start but quickly worked her way from eighth to first. Once out front, she settled into her pace and began putting some real estate between herself and Tania Satchwell, who by then was defending second position against an attack by Patterson. Eventually, Patterson got the better of Satchwell, but not before Sau had put a comfortable cushion between herself and the rest of the field (she even had time to give her mechanic a high-five as she came around on the final lap), and Husqvarna-mounted Vania Medrano got around early leader Hudson to claim fourth position. Defending champ Satchwell's hopes for a moto win were all but lost when she went down on the first lap, letting much of the pack get by and leaving her to play catch-up. Behind the Hondas of Bau and Hudson, Sheena Patterson fought off Medrano and 2000 WML champion Jessica Patterson. Jessica waited until the time was right and then passed both Medrano and Sheena, moving from fifth to third in one clean outside pass, and then went on to take second away from Hudson, who ended up third in the moto and on the day. Medrano took another fourth for fourth overall, while Satchwell rounded out the top five, which was also her overall finish. Bau cruised to her second mota win of the day and the overall. "IAI I-I was really good; I'm superhappy." said the V3/UFO/SRS-backed Hondo rider. "My first moto, I didn't start really good, around 7 or 8, but I make my way up. Second moto, I just took a holeshot, took off and won the race." With this, her second win (the other being at Budds Creek), and two second-place finishes, the 1999 WML champion has extended her lead over another former WML champ, Jessi- neVIl's AUGUST 21, 2002 61
