Washougal Amateur Days Washougal Motocross Park Huffman, Cantaloupi Heat Up Washougal By Cuw the opening day. scoring 250cc C and FourStroke B/C-c1ass victories, both via 1-1 placings. After handily whipping the 250cc C class, Warren came back to beat even tougher competition in the second division of the FourStroke class. A portion of the class were B rid· ers, none of whom could put the stops to Warren, who won. Californian Tony Sherman finished third in moto one and then trailed Warren in moto two to gamer second overall, ahead of David Gassin (4-3). Cobra riders Cody Evanson and Brad Frace duked it out in the 51cc (7-8) class on Saturday, the same day that the National Pro riders got their chance to take to the course for their practice session. Evanson and Frace each garnered mota wins in the class, but it was Evanson who got the overall win with his 1-2 finishes. Frace dominated moto two, but a fourth· place finish in mota one left him second overall. Brody Thom (2-4), Tyler Van Zandt (5-3), Colby Hagan (3-8) and local rider Kyle Huffman (8-5) fiiled out the top six overail. The largest numbers of entries came in the 125cc and 250cc C classes, as weil as in the 250cc D class, each of which utilized three divisions. Californian Nick Thiel and Oregonians Robert Wullbrandt and Guy E. Tow topped the three divisions of 125cc C riders on Thursday (at 108 entries). Yamaha-mounted Califomian Mark Tilley, a part-time AMA National and full-time AMA Four-Stroke National contestant, garnered an overall win on Saturday in the Four-Stroke A class, splitting moto wins with Washington's Brett Boehm. Hansen split the two riders overall, as his 2-3 finishes trailed Tilley overoll, but finished ahead of Boehm (8-1). LIGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 25-27 Nearly 1500 riders from as far away as Maryland and Hawaii were on hand for the 22nd annual Washougal Amateur Days at Washougal Motocross Park, but it was the current and former AMA National speedsters who were victorious in A-class action at the three-day amateur event this year. Oregon's Ryan Huff· man posted two overall wins on Friday, the second day of racing, with 250cc and Over 25 A-class victories. Huffman fell one moto short of what could have been an unprecedented three-class sweep; after winning the first 125cc A mota, Huffman switched motorcycles for the second moto and, after a moto-two win, was disqualified for the infraction, and Washington's Paul Conner was declared the overall winner. Californian Donnie Cantaloupi, a former National rider for Team Yamaha in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was also impressive. In the competitive Over 40 A class, Washington's John Svensson won the first moto after grabbing the lead and remaining in the point position to' the finish, while Cantaloupi finished second to the Honda CRF450R-mounted Svensson. In moto two, Svensson and Can~ taloupi were involved in a drag race for the lead in the tricky whoop section, and Svensson crashed. This greatly aided in Cantaloupi's overall win, as Svensson had a lot of ground to make up and finished 13th. This allowed Cantaloupi to take command to the finish to garner a 2-1 overail win. Washington's Andy James ran a solid second to Cantaloupi after also getting lucky; James Miller, who ran second in the early portion of the race, crashed and handed second to James, who with his 4-2 placings netted second overall. Idaho's Blake Barrymore (6-4), Ted DeVol (5-6), Miiler (10-3) and Californian Shawn Hybarger (8-5) filled out the top six overall. The rider who beat Cantaloupi during Friday's Over 30 A class, Rick Hansen, would be Huffman's closest competition in the Over 25 A class, finishing second to the No Fear/Scott/Pro Circuit/Washougalmx.combacked Huffman via 2-2 placings. Another of the large number of Golden State riders on hand, Martin Klossner, used 3-3 finishes to nab third overall. After posting the Over 25 A-class win, Huffman came back to top the 250cc A class, also with a 1-1 sweep. Suzuki·mounted Cali· fomian Billy Jurevich finished second overall, although Oregon's Tyler Fick and Montana's Josh Sawyer trailed the Yamaha rider in both motos. Jurevich's consistent 3-4 placings net· ted him second overall, while Kawasakimounted Sawyer finished third (6-2). Conner (5-3), Nevada's Ray Caravailho (4-9) and Hawaii's Jozef Deutsch (11-6) fiiled out the top six overail. Conner used consistent 4-4 performances to nab the overall win in the 125cc A class greatly attributed to Huffman's aforementioned moto~two disqualification. Montana's Cameron Weaver moved up a spot in the second moto - credited with a win - but Weaver did not finish moto one. Shon Series (2-6), Jon Replogle (7-3), Idaho's Leighton Ullie (10-2) and Jason Garletta (8-5) trailed Conner overall. Honda-mounted Miles Warren has for much of this season been the cream of the crop in the C classes, and on Thurdsday, the story was much the same. The rider from Olympi., Washington, topped two classes on 60 AUGUST 21, 2002' cue I Washougal Motocross Park Washougal. Washington R.sults: July 25-27, 2002 Thursday 85 BEG (7-11): 1. By CRAIG GRISMORE SIDNEY, OH, JULY 26 Promoter Dean Gallup brought the Ohio ProAm Dirt Track Series to the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Sidney, Ohio, to race in front of the fairgoers on the Iimestone-and·pea-gravel half-mile horse track. Former National number 86, Mike Ashton, was there to make his return to racing. though not on his familiar Grand National XR750 of 15 years ago. Inste.d, Ashton brought a relatively stock-looking KTM on which to do battle in the 250cc class. Season-long 250cc favorite Ricky Marshall had motor problems and faded to a fifth-place finish, leaving as Ashton's main competition amateur number 86, Bradley Vanderkooi, nephew of the current National number 86, Jerry Vanderkooi. In the end, experience won out over youthful enthu· siasm. Ashton's win was the first Ohio Pro-Am Dirt Track Series win for a KTM in 250cc Amateur competition this year. The Vanderkooi family did not leave empty-handed, though; John Vanderkooi won the Over 40 class over his usual rival John Hamilton. "Uncle Jerry" then borrowed John's machine and used it to hold off persistent challenges from Canadian Dominic Michaud in the 505cc Expert Feature. Cory Roth, injured in a racing accident at Dayton back in June, returned to racing and appeared to be back in form, taking a well-deserved third over CRF450R-mounted Kevin Hilbert. Ohio boys ruled the home roost in Sidney after struggling through defeats last week at the hands of riders from Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Florida and Canada. On this night. only one first-place plaque was hauled out of state. Port Orange, Florida's Chris Shin· deldecker grabbed the Heavyweight Vintage win aboard his trusty old Trackmaster Triumph. Shindeldecker rode a hot, inside, case· dragging line to an impressive victory. Highline· riding Tom Boyce held second on his Yamaha twin for most of the race until Thomas Englehart managed to co'ax his smaller Honda single past by using a smoother midtrack line. In the Money classes, Nick Evans was absolutely flying. Absent from competition the previous week, Evans was champing at the bit to get back on track. Evans attacked the cushion; he was flicking It in hard and getting right back on the gas as momentum and the laws of physics thrust the machine toward the bales. His rear tire was practically chewing straw by the apex of the first and second tum. Evans was focused, and the pea-gravel spray flew as the spinning rear tire dug deep. This aggressive style had his bike pointed toward the third comer by midtum and he got some absolute rocket-shot drives down off the bank· ing out of two. His motor sounded strong, and Evans appeared to be unbeatable in the 505cc
