Los Banos Fairgrounds: Billy Jurevich won the fourth round of the Top Gun
Summer-X Series in los Banos, California.
he came up just a few feet short of making it
three in a row.
For Jurevich. the win was pure satisfac·
tion as he credited a recent c;hange in
his preparation as a major factor in his
performance.
"For the last two weeks, I've been practicing with Turtle Wikoff. and he's been making
me ride hour-long motos," Jurevich said. "The
I
first three events, my endurance has been the
problem, end I was getting arm pump real
quick. But tonight. I didn't really get tired until
the last lap, and it feels really good to finally
win one."
The race started off with Intermediate
speedster Cory McDaniel up front, while heavy
hitters Pestana, Scott Davis and Kenny Heess
started from the back. As predicted, McDaniel,
piloting a Powerhouse Yamaha/Pro Circuit/
Posey Racing/O'Neal Yamaha, set a fast pace
early on and opened up a gap on the field.
However, surprisingly, at the halfway point,
McDaniel had managed to keep that gap and
looked poised to pull off a major upset. Jurevich was in second but still a ways behind,
while Pestana was busy clawing his way
through the field. With about four laps to go,
McDaniel began to fade ever so slightly, and
Jurevich turned it up, making the pass for the
lead on lap nine of the 12-lap race. As Jurevich began to pull away from McDaniel, Pestana made his way up to third, but he had a
lot of ground to make up to catch the leader.
On the white-flag lap, Jurevich could
sense the victory, and Pestana had now made
his way past McDaniel and turned on the
afterburners. Coming through the whoop section, Pestana gobbled up ground and came
into the ensuing left-hander right on Jurevich's
rear fender, but he ran out of time as the
checkered nag new on the following straight
for Jurevich.
"I gave it my best shot and came up just a
little short," Pestana said. "I'm glad for Billy
tonight, but I'll be back."
McDaniel, who held on for a respectable
third, was thrilled that he was able to run as
well as he did.
..) missed a couple of shifts near the end
and Billy and Jeff caught me," said McDaniel,
"but I ended up third out of 12 guys and even
led for nine laps. I can't ask for much more
than that."
In Pee Wee Action, KTM pilot Mark Braden
scored a pair of back-la-back moto wins in
the 50cc Open Division One class. Braden led
every lap of both motos for the overall win
over Jessy Nelson, who toughed out a 2-2
score for second overall on the evening. Brandon Olivares put in a pair of good rides on his
Polini, taking the win in the 50cc Open Divi-
sion Two class over Jesse Janco.
Another huge class requiring two divisions
was the 50cc (7-8) class. Nelson and Gabe
Adame did battle in the second moto; Nelson
snagged the Division One overall, followed by
Adame. Michael Fontana claimed the victory
in Division Two, ahead of Tony O·Connor.
Cobra jockey Michael Maze won the 50cc
(4-6) Division One class, with Peter Best besting the Division Two ranks. Daniel Gonzales
(1- I) put in a solid ride in the 50cc Pee
Wee Junior class for the victory over Derick
Silva (2-2).
