Mid-South Championship Summer Camp Series Round 5: Bear Hollow Hare Scrambles STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEBBIE ALLEN UVINGSTON, TN, JULY 21 I'f\'\ ustin Gibson made the Bear HollYIlow Hare Scrambles look easy. Heavily armed with an RM 125, he was flying at round five of the MidSouth Championship Summer Camp Series. He made six laps on the 4.5-mile loop and finished the race in first overall. "My Sarge's Cycles Suzuki and my Pro Action of Kentucky suspension was awesome on every rocky hill," Gibson declared. "I can't believe it - I got a flat on the first lap and rode the whole race on it." The Moose/GPR/Smith -backed Gibson rode in the 200cc A class with eight other riders. They were the second class to leave the start, and almost everyone knew that his targeted competition was nestled out front in the 250cc/Open A class. P.A. Allen, Gary Hendricks and Landon Carter each won at least one Summer Camp race, so he aimed his scope on them and moved in for the kill. Off the start, Team Green Kawasaki/Oakley/One Industries-supported Allen was the first rider into the woods. He blazed the new trail with 10 riders following. Thirty seconds later, the 200cc A class left the start, with Jeremy Ketchum taking a streng lead into the woods, but Gibson passed him shortly thereafter. "There's no sense in holding a faster rider up," said Ketchum. "Besides, I really wanted to key off of his ride, and that really helped me. I stayed with him for a lap and a half, and Dustin got around some lappers that I didn't." While hidden from view, the battle for the overall escalated. Gibson broke loose at the end of his second lap and was 15 seconds ahead on elapsed time. Allen got hung up on a hill behind some lappers and dropped Dustin Gibson snareel the Bear Hollow Hare Scrambles overall victory in Uvlngston, Tennessee, and placed first In the 200cc A class. back to fourth but cranked it up a full minute on the next lap and took the lead while Gibson struggled on a hill. During the fourth lap, Gibson reclaimed the timed lead by one second, and then, midway through the fifth lap, he finally caught a glimpse of Allen. "When I came around a comer, I saw P.A. turn around and look at me," said Gibson. "I just knew he was going to take off and leave me, and he did. He was gone, just like that." Shortly thereafter, Allen had to bite the big Bear's bullet when he moved back to third place. While going up a hill, he got trapped in a rooted rut and lost too much time trying to get out. Gibson and Hendricks passed him, and 15 seconds later he maneuvered his KX into high gear and claimed the fastest lap time of 13:03 on his last lap. But that wasn't enough for the win. Gibson won the race with a 45-second lead, while Allen came in second place overall and won the 250cc/Open A class. Hendricks, Carter and Harvey Whitaker finished out the top five overall. "This was really a fun course," Allen said, "and I hope they put on a winter race. It was tough, but I had a good time. Dustin just had the better ride, and I'm happy for him." "I tried to go up a tough section real fast," said Hendricks, "but instead I went over my bike and flew off into the woods. He [Allen] got by me, and I finished in third place overall." He also placed second in the 250cc/ Open A class. "If you tried to go fast," Whitaker said, "you'd make too many mistakes. It seemed like every time I tried something, I would end up getting passed myself. After a while, I tried to be smooth, and then everything fell into place." The Kawasaki jockey started dead last and finished the race in fifth place overall and won the FourStroke A/B class. The older guys and Criders weren't necessarily the slowest at the Steve Gordon-prepped track. Years of experience paid off for the Senior riders on this tight, technical hare scrambles. "This course was tailor-made for [Clay] Stuckey," said Mark Hosbach. Stuckey took the Senior A/B win and was finished 12th overall. He made six laps in an hour and 36 minutes. Marty Thacker, Steve Lambruno, Gary Barr and Hosbach were the other riders in that class, and they Rob Roger'S was the winner of the U9ht Trail class. Vet C class. Street won his class and came in 26th overall; riding his fourstroke Yamaha, he made five laps in an hour and a half. Rogers came in 35th, while Holden and Anderton placed 37th and 38th overall, respectively. eN Bu. Hallaw H... Scnmbln Uvingstlln, Tennessee Results: July 21, 2002 [Raund 51 O/A: 1.
