AHRMArrhe Classic Motor Cycle Dirt Track Series Round 15: AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, Ashland County Fairgrounds final over another former nationalnumber holder on another smaller bike, Ohio's Jimmy Zeigler, on one of the speedy Can-Am two-strokes that have come to dominate AHRMA's Sportsman 250cc class. In this race, Brown, Zeigler and Triumph-mounted Mike Persa had run side by side early on, until Brown opened an advantage. Persa later got past Zeigler for second and was gaining ground on Brown, only to fall in turn one and hand the runner-up spot back to the Can-Am rider. Barney Waldron, however, outdid Brown by earning three class wins. He snatched away what appeared to be a sure win for Harley-mounted George Wills in Classic 500/750cc, getting his brakeless Triumph past on the last lap. Another of Waldron's wins was in Sportsman 750cc, this time on a Yamaha. Frank Hardman was set to give Waldron a challenge, but a broken motorcycle ended his hopes. Waldron also took the Over 35 Veteran-class win, ahead of Hardman and Chris Thomas - all three on Yamahas. The other double winner was Iowa's Mike Connell. He rode his Harley Sprint to an easy win in Classic 250cc, leaving behind a battle for second that, at one point, involved four riders. In the end, Triumphmounted James Tumlin won the contest for runner-up over Yamahamounted Mark Hawk. This time on a Honda 350, Connell did another disappearing act in Sportsman 600cc, as Bultaco rider Tom Morgan won the dispute over second with Hondamounted Hardman. It was a good evening for the Wills family as well. Fath.er George Wills and Craig Breckon put on their usual show in the Dinosaur class, with Wills and his Harley WR grabbing the lead at the white flag and hanging on over Breckon's Triumph 500 for the last time around. Meanwhile, son David Wills prevailed in a Sportsman 250cc race that had the leaders coming down the front straight four abreast at times. William Forman came in second and Zeigler third when it was all sorted out. The top five were all riding CanAms, and the speed of these machines was evident when Jeff Metzloff slid out The Can-Am contingent dominated the Sportsman 250cc field, with David Wills (1) winning it. The Saturday program went so well that everything was finished before it was even necessary to test whether the repairs to the lighting system had been successful. Maybe that's just as well - nobody wanted to shoot for a three-day race. I:N Ashland County Fairgrounds Ashland, Ohio Results: July 19 & 20, 2002 (Round 151 DINO: 1. George Wills (H-O); 2. AHRMAISpeed & Sport National Vintage Trials Series Round 13: AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course STORY AND PHOTOS BV MATT BENSON LEXINGTON, OH, J{]LY 20 Fnglishman Mick Andrews won the " World Observed Trials Championship in J 971 and '72, and Ossa honored his achievement by producing the famed Mick Andrews Replica model. Back on one of the greenand-white Ossa MARs as part of Vintage Motorcycle Days' celebration of Spanish motorcycles, Andrews gave a trials-riding clinic as he turned in the only error-free scorecard of the day. The Mid-Ohio trial is typically AHRMA's largest of the year, and this time it attracted 125 entries. With the big turnout, a compact eight-section loop and a heavy rain the previous afternoon making for slick going in some sections, things moved slowly there was more waiting in line than actual riding. But Vintage trials riders are generally a laid-back lot, so the traffic jams were taken in stride and offered ample opportunity to study the sections and socialize with fellow competitors. The heavily wooded sections were laid out next to the Mid-Ohio camping area, so this trial is one where riders got to perform to a large, appreciative crowd. This year's trial featured lots of slippery logs, in addition to the always-popular rock pile and the usual climbing in, out and around a 20 AUGUST 14, 2002' cue .... streambed. Andrews had problems with none of it, but his fellow Modern Classic Expert-class competitors had a tough time on their first trip around the loop in each and every case. Second-placed Yamaha rider Ron Bertrand lost J 1 of his 16 points on the first of the three times around the loop, and third-place finisher Harry Heilemann accumulated 13 of his 2 J total marks in his first try at the sections. Most winning scores actually were quite low. Jim Smith took the Modern Classic Novice win with a single point and was just a dab ahead of Ray Dey in second, while Mark Grawl and Hiroshi Sa to followed with three points apiece. The Modern Classic Intermediate win went to Honda rider William Catogni, with a score of 11. In the always-competitive Premier Lightweight classes, trials master Bob Ginder rode his 1964 James to the Expert win with a score of seven, chased all the way by Triumph Cub rider Mike Parsley, who earned a total of 10 points. BSA-mounted Edward Logan dabbed just twice on the second loop to take the Intermediate win, ahead of Bruce Clegg's six, James Foster Jr.'s 10 and Brad Eaton's 11. Randall Witt was victorious in the Novice class, aboard a J 960 Greeves, tallying J 0 points to second-place Gordon Gray's 16. nB'N'S A tie breaker had to be used to determine the Classic Novice-class winner when both Scott Kim and Lewis Mayer each turned in scores of 14. Kirn, on his unconventional '65 Honda Trail 90, cleaned 19 sections to Mayer's 14 to win the class. There was a three-way tie at one point apiece in the Beginner class; as the oldest rider, at 52, Ossa rider Gary Brinton got the win over Steve Pennington aged 40, and 9-year-old Casey Bollinger.
