AHRMAIThe Classic Motor Cycle Dirt Track Series Round 15: AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, Ashland County Fairgrounds second night, many among the large contingent of spectators returned to the fairgrounds' grandstands for the abbreviated, but action-packed, program. By far the most exciting of the finals was the Over 60 Super Senior race, which pitted Melvin Brown against former AMA Grand National contender Ronnie Rail. Brown, riding a Triumph 750, grabbed the holeshot but, on the second lap, the BSA B50mounted Rail slipped underneath through turns one and two to take the lead. That move initiated a back-and" forth battle between the two, with Brown riding a low line on the peagravel cushion track and Rail going really deep into the comers, squaring them off and powering out neck and neck with Brown. Brown - with an extra 250cc of power - spent more time out front than did Rail until just past the halfway mark in the eight-lap final, STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT BENSON ASHlAND, OH, JULY 19-20 OU always feel like things have gone well when a nighttime dirt track starts and finishes the same day. Unfortunately, the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days half mile turned into one of those "two-day" affairs, as it literally took well over 24 hours to finally put the event into the books. In this case, the problem was a bad electrical transformer that kept about a third of the track lights from coming on as darkness fell on Friday night. So the AHRMA, the AMA, and fairgrounds officials huddled and decided to come back again on Sat· urday evening to finish the program. Thanks to a decision by AMA personnel not to charge admission for the Y 18 AUGUST 14, 2002' cue I • n _ 1111' S when the persistent Rail leveraged himself into the lead and appeared to have gained the momentum. However, just as the white flag came out, Rail's steel shoe became unsecured and was left flapping by a strap. Brown saw his opportunity coming off turn four and squirted past for the win. "He would have beat me if his shoe wouldn't have come off," Brown honestly exclaimed afterward. Brown was a double winner for the night, also taking the Over 50 Senior
