Streets of Willow Springs Schendel Still Cooking on the Streets By ROD GIRARD WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, JULY 7 In conditions that would rival those in a convection oven, the riders contesting round six of California Motorcycle Road Racing Association's 2002 season just baked on the Streets of Willow Springs. With the Streets came the Formula Three bikes. Perhaps the fastest two-wheelers on the Streets, these purpose-built 125cc GP bikes scream. Matt Dawson was quickest off the line in the morning's Formula Three race, with Ian igercic, Josh Alverson and Skye Girard in hot pursuit. With the pressure on, the lead pack was tight until Igercic iow-sided out on lap three, leaving Alverson free to work on Dawson. On lap five, Alverson made his move on Dawson to take the lead, while Patrick Lonnee and Kaz Chiba moved past Girard into third and fourth, respectiveiy. At the flag, Alverson took a solid win, followed by Dawson In second, while Chiba bettered Lonnee for third. In race two, Dawson was once again the quickest off the line, with Igercic, Alverson and Chiba in light formation. The race was close through iap three, with both igerclc and Alverson getting around Dawson. By lap five, Igercic was stretching out his lead as the leaders lost contact with one another. Despite his win in race two, Igercic did no better than third overall, while Alverson took top honors. Dawson hung on to second, while Chiba's consistent finishes gave him fourth. The Expert Stock class was the most hotly contested race of the day, with the added attraction of the father-and-son team of Jon and J.D. Schendel. In race one, Jon Schendel rocketed into the lead, with Blair Sullenger, J.D. and Scott Gamer lightly in tow, By lap three, Garner was challenging Schendel for the lead, only to have Sullenger pass both him and Schendel on lap four. At the line, Sullenger held off a late-charging Schendel for the win, with Garner taking third and young J.D. close behind in fourth. It was the younger Schendel who leaped into an early lead in race two, followed closely by the old man. By lap three, Dad had wrestled the lead from his son, and the two Schendels fought off the advances of Sullenger and Gamer. On the next lap, Sullenger got around the younger Schendel, and the race ran to the flag in that order, The final results gave the overall to Daddy Schendel, with Sullenger in second, J.D. Red Bud MX Champion Speedway Parshall the Whole Way By JAMES McCOlLUM OWEGO, NY, JULY 7 This event at Champion Speedway was action-packed, with a lot of riders coming out to ride. Cam Rafferty and Dave Oakden were the riders of the night in Division One, leaVing the others in their dust. The Division One Scratch main was a rough one. Rafferty got the holeshot, but Tom Burge got into Oakden's back wheel. Tom Sephton hit Burge's bike, which sent Sephton off his. Everybody was okay after the crash, and the race was restarted. Oakden was sent back 20 yards for red-flagging the race. Rafferty got the holeshot once again. Sephton's bike had problems, ending his race. Rafferty pulled away with the lead, while Burge and Jerry Harman battled for second on the last lap. Burge held him off to take second, while a really fast Rafferty took first. In the Division One Handicap race, Buman started up front and held the lead for two laps before he got wide in one, allowing Burge and Oakden underneath him. Rafferty fell, sending himself back to last place, and he was unable to catch back up. Sephton and Harman battled for third for the rest of the race. Harman was able to hold Sephton off to take third. In front, the two Poorman Trucking teammates, Burge and Oakden, baltied for the lead, Oakden rode the race low and consistent, and it paid off. Burge was not able to get around him, and Oakden took the checkered flag. In Support A action, Conrad Parshall, who had not raced in many years, had an impressive showing, winning a heat, the semi and the main. In the main, he got off the line quickly and couldn't be caught by any rider. Support B belonged to the two young guns, Chip Lengle and Mike Buman Jr. Chip won three of the six heats and Buman won two. When the two squared off in the final heat, Lengle edged out Buman for the win. The main went differently. On the second lap, Lengle was trying to go under Casey Donholt, who was low in the corner. Lengle had too much speed and spun out. This caused a restart, and Lengle had to go back an additional 20 yards. Buman got out to an early lead. Donholt and Lengle made up ground fast, but they could not catch Buman, A very happy Buman took the win. It was an excellent night at Speedway. The U.S. National Speedway Championship Series is coming to Action Park and Champion n • _ S Dealers Ride Red Bud By lARRY WITMER BUCHANAN, MI, JULY 8 Parts Unlimited treated their dealerships to a fantastic day after the Pro National at Red Bud. The main focus of the event was to get dealers up to speed on new products. Each dealers hooks up with their favorite industry contact and goes out on the famous Red Bud circuit to see how the product performs. At the morning's riders' meeting, Parts Unlimited's Rob Boyas went over the ground rules and then introduced the manufllcturer reps. The dealers were categorized as Novices, Intermediates, A riders, Pros, and Industry riders. The track was the same that the Pro had ridden the previous day. The track was excellent, and everyone was grateful to the Ritchie Family for letting Parts Unlimited put on this event, The dealers all were walking around with huge smiles. Senior off-road manager Broc Glover, along with off-road product manager Brian Fleck, brought Brock Sellards' works KTM for the dealers to ride. This bike is fast, and it handles like a dream and feels so light. "Our champions, like Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed, count on Dunlop tires to carry them to championships," Glover declared. "R.C. raced here yesterday on Dunlop 756s, with a 773 mounted early on in practice, We have some new things coming out in '03 to make Dunlop stronger, Much thanks to my guys Andrew, Rob and Eddie, our tire techs, and the countless hours put in by Brian. This Parts Unlimited ride is a great lopportunity]to talk to the dealers." "I'm going to be out there with you guys on the track," said Thor's Bob Ketchum prior to the ride, "so don't run me overrn FMF sent Doug Mueller and a two techs to assist with pipes, silencer and jetting concerns.
