Upcoming Rounds;
Round 10 - Millville, Minnesota, August 18
Round 11 - Binghamton, New York, August 25
BRIEFLY•••
Denny Stephenson was on hand working for ESPN, as he will
fill in for David Bailey as the color commentator on the television
coverage of the Washougal round, Bailey is taking the week off,
so Stephenson will fly to Atlanta on Wednesday to fill in alongside
head announcer Davey Coombs on the show, "I'm looking forward to it," Stephenson said, "I've never worked from the studio
before, "
Red Bull KTM's Grant Langston had hoped to be ready for
Washougal, but although he is now able to ride, team manager
Ron Heben said the South African's knee is still giving him a little
trouble, Langston hopes to capitalize on the time off after
Washougal and be ready for the next round In Millville, Minnesota,
Dunng the week prior to this race, the various teams' big-rig drivers had one of their longer drives of the year - from Unadilla on the east coast to Washougal on the west coast. "It doesn't
get much longer," said Chevy Trucks Kawasaki driver George
Ellis" Any longer, and you're going to get wet." Normally a hardcore road dog, Scott USA's Bevo Forti "cheated" by flying out to
Washington and having Scott send a smaller truck from its headquarters in Sun Valley, Idaho, though he can be forgiven, After all.
Forti wouldn't have been able to capitalize on the post-Washougal
three-week break, since he'll attend the AMA Loretta Lynn's
Amateur National Championships in Tennessee.
Also domg some major mid-week traveling was SoBe Suzuki
manager Roger DeCoster, who flew to Japan after Unadilla for
several important meetings, Because of the trip, DeCoster wasn't
able to finalize a deal with Sebastien Tortelli for 2003, though it
looks good, "I think it's going to happen," DeCoster said, "I just
don't have anything on paper yet. " DeCoster said he expected to
have a deal finalized early next week. By the way, Travis Pastrana
is still expected to make his retum at the next round in Millville,
Minnesota,
According to several team managers, Clear Channel Motor
Sports has been putting some pressure on the factory squads
lately to attend the two European rounds of the World Championship Supercross Series in December, though none of the
teams (except Red Bull KTM) seems interested in doing so (KTM
sees It as an opportUrtity to get Grant langston some race expenence on a 250, and the company's Austrian headquarters will
make the endeavor less inconvenientJ, The primary problem is
liming, since the teams are usually doing last-minute preparations
for the Anaheim opener at that time, not to mention trying to celebrate the holidays, Another problem is that the teams feel they
already have too many races, what with the 16-round AMA SX
Senes, the 12-round NatIOnal MX Series, and the U.S, Open,
Even if the bulk of the AMA racers elect to skip the European
rounds, they will be affected by Clear Channel's alliance with European promoter Dorna and the subsequent cooperation on the
World Supercross Series, since unleaded fuel will be mandated
during the AMA SX Series. "That was part of the stipulations in
the agreement with Clear Channel." said AMA MX Manager Duke
Finch, The reason for the stipulation is presumably that unleaded
fuel is a requirement for FIM competition, and the American SX
rounds are a part of the FlM Worid SX Series, That said, the AMA
is not requiring teams to meet the FIM's 92-octane limit. Unleaded
fuel will not be required in the 125cc class, and it is not yet known
If it will be required In the 2003 National MX Series,
Team Yamaha's David Vulllemin was absent again at Washougal, and it now tums out that he will miss the remainder of the
season, On the Thursday pnor to the race, the Frenchman discovered that the shoulder he mjured back in March during a magazine photo shoot has a break In the joint. an injury that somehow went undetected in the first couple of MRls that were done.
Since then, Vuillemin aggravated the injury in a crash at Troy,
Ohio, and the break was finally confirmed. Vuillemin was planning
to undergo surgery in France on the Wednesday after Washougal and, according to team manager Steve Butler, he is expected
to be out for six to eight weeks, That means he would miss the
remainder of the National MX Series and probably the
Motocross des Nations Nuillemin was a member of the winning
French team last year),
On a brighter note, SoBe Suzuki's Sean Hamblin made a
retum to racing from a bruised lung Incurred In a crash at Troy,
Ohio, During his brief time off Hamblin did some riding in Southem Califomia, and he said he IS completely recovered, Hamblin
placed ninth at Washougal with 5-12 mota finishes.
Nathan Ramsey has been sporting a new blond-buzz haircut at
the last couple of rounds and, although the Team Honda rider
looks good with the new 'do, he is almost unrecognizable, "I
wanted to get it cut. and I didn't have time, so I just decided to
shave it," Ramsey said, "Then I thought, 'Well, that looks kind of
boring,' so I bleached it. Everyone's telling me they don't know
who lam.On hand at Washougal was the Tag Entertainment team of scriptwriter Bart Baker, director Steve Boyum and producer David Barrett. who were researching for an upcoming theatrical release
that will feature motocross. Tag created the Disney film
"Motocrossed," and Barrett says their new project will feature a
small-town rider who dreams of becoming a factory rider, finally
gelling his opportunity when he qualifies for the U,S, Open, "It's
going to be hip - as real as we can possibly make it." said Barrett
of the as-yet unnamed -feel-good" film, which is scheduled to
release no sooner than next spring, "Motocrossed· star Alana
Austin was also in attendance at Washougal.
Ricky Carmichael, normally known for his insistence on
orange or red gear, was sporting some new '03 blue-and-white
Fox apparel in Saturday praclJce at Washougal. "He insisted on
It." said Fox's Scott Taylor on Saturday, "It's different for him, but
he asked us to make some up, We have to add on the Honda
logos and stuff. He says he wants to wear it tomorrow, but I
brought along a bunch of orange stuff just in case," Good move;
Carmichael was once agam ,n orange when Sunday's motos
rolled around,
Pro Circuit/Kawasak,/Chevy Trucks manager Jim Peny said at
Washougal that Mike Brown is now off crutches following the
knee surgery that he underwent on the Tuesday prior to the
Unadilla round. Brown 's currently undergoing rehabilitation, and
he'll be out of action for the remainder of the National MX Series,
Blimpie Suzuki's Buddy Antunez has been giving some
thought to racing in the WORCS off-road round in Gorman, California, on September 2, "I like all aspects of motorcycling,"
Antunez said, "I enjoy going and doing Jason Pridmore's Star
[roadracingJ schools, and I'm buddies with [FMF Suzuki off-roaderl Rodney Smith," Although Antunez got the go-ahead from FMF
Suzuki team manager Mike Webb, he most likely won't actually
get to compete in the race, since it conflicts with a round of the
Arenacross Series.
