tion until getting another five in section 13. A wet log made the beginning of section 15 almost impossible, but some riders reached the end by literally carrying their bikes, and scored threes. Amazing! Loop one ended in uncertainty, with Lampkin (one of the few to finish section 15) leading the way with 30 points. Then came Fujinami and Jarvis on 32, ahead of Raga's 36. Cabestany and Cobos were tied for fifth with 38. Some sections worsened for loop two, and there was little time remaining to clear them. Lampkin retained his concentration, realizing where it was possible to score threes, and added just 33 points to his score. Raga picked up two more than that, besting Fujinami for second (the latter rider complaining of some unfair scoring by the observers). DAve As happened in Italy, Fujinami found the necessary motivation on the second day, but this time he won not only based on the number of cleans, but by scoring an impressive 10 points less than Lampkin, thanks to a superlative second loop in which he collected only 13 penalties (the best of the competition). Fujinami had not started badly, while Raga and Lampkin were going well. The modifications of five sections served to improve the scores, but the observers were being more strict, penalizing the slightest roll backward with an immediate five. This surprised and worried some of the riders, and even Fujinami was disappointed at the end of lap one for a supposed "stop" in section 15. At half-competition, the results showed Raga ahead with 24 marks, with Fujinami one point back. Lampkin was third with 28. Lampkin was recovering very well in the second loop until reaching section eight, where a rolling rock caused him to go back a little - enough for a five, in fact. Another five for going backward in the following section, and Lampkin was pretty much out of the hunt. On the contrary, Fujinami gained confidence and showed his best, grabbing a deserved win. In third place was Marc Freixa, the best of four riders who were all separated by only a single point. CN Auvel'llllo Motll Sports Clo""ont-Forrand, F.-nee Results: July 13-14, 2002 DAY 1: 1.
