Just as it did during its 95th anniversary. the cornpany has favored the refinernent of its existing model lineup over the introduction of any new products. although Harley customers can reasonably expect more new products in 2004. Even so, the current range of Harley motorcycles has been adomed in rather striking anniversary colors - even the VRSCA V-Rod sports a painted-on sheen this year. Using an entirely new paint process. the two-tone hue on the anniversary models is known as "Sterling Sliver and Vivid Black" (the scheme is portrayed on this Road King). Harley has also released a second color choice, known as "Gunmetal," available on all models. Also unlike the 95th. the schemes will be on every model produced for the 2003 model year, and Harley-Davidson has committed to a 14-month production cycle in order to fill the demand for the centennial models. Each model will sport the cloisonne and coined 100th anniversary logo not only on the fuel tank, but also on the engine cases - a first for the company. Wisconsin. as the winner of the first IFMA freestyle event of the summer on July 19. Bartram topped Ronnie Renner and Robert Distler in winning the event. Nineteen-year-old Charlie Deutscher (Hus) scored the overall win at the Pirelli Spring Creek GP 100 in Millville. Minnesota. on July 2 1. Kyle Nelson (KTM), David Stickel (Suz). Dylan Debel (GG) and John Strangfeld (GG) rounded out the top five. The race was round four of the Parts Unlimited Off-Road Championship Series. Matt Hines (Suz) &Cored the Pro Stock Bike win at the NHRA Mopar Parts MileHigh Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver. Colorado. on July 21. Hines defeated reigning NHRA PowerAde Champion Angelle Savoie (Suz) after Savoie red-lighted in the final. Savoie still holds a commanding lead in the series points standings. with 121 points on her nearest competitor. Craig Treble. 80 1680. Hot weather. huge fields and some outstanding performances by racing legends highlighted the AHRMA action at the July 19-2 I AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington. Ohio. Due to a lighting problem at the nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds. it took two tries to get in The Classic Motor Cycle Dirt Track National. but when the finals finally ran a day late. it was flat track great Ronnie Rail (BSAl and Melvin Brown who entertained the large crowd in the Super Senior class. RaJl had just gotten past Brown in a backand-forth battle when, on the last lap. his steel shoe came loose and he had to narrowly concede the race to Brown. Brown, George Wills. Mike Connell and Barney Waldron each scored a pair of class wins. Former World Trials Champion Mick Andrews (Oss) outdistanced the Modern Classic Expert field by zeroing the Speed & Sport National Trial. Andrews followed that up with a win in the Speed & Sport Vintage MX National. taking the Classic 250cc Expert class over Barry Higgins. both riding Ossas (Spanish motorcycles were the featured marque at this year's VMDl. Two-time World 500cc MX Champion Jeff Smith (BSAl earned the Over 60 Expert victory. On MidOhio's 2.4-mile road course. class champ Pat Mooney (Norl scored a pair of close 500 Premier wins over Jay Richardson (Norton). Officials of The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway will posthumously induct Will Davis into the track's prestigious Walk of Fame prior to the Wendy's Charlotte AMA Grand National motorcycle event on Saturday night. July 27. Davis. a lifelong resident of Goldsboro. North Carolina. was killed in a motorcycle racing accident just weeks after edging Kenny Coolbeth to score an emotional victory in front of his home-state fans during last year's Wendy's Charlotte AMA Grand National at the 4/1 O-mile clay oval. "Will Davis was the best-flat track motorcycle racer to ever grow up on the red clay of North Carolina.· said H.A. • Humpy· Wheeler. president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. "He was so proud to represent North Carolina in his sport and his exciting victory in front of the home-state fans here last year was very special. It is only fitting that Will Davis will be the first motorcycle racer inducted into The Dirt Track Walk of Fame." Davis will join I 6-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws sprint car champion Steve Kinser in The Dirt Track Walk of Fame. Kinser had his hand prints and signature imprinted in concrete during a special ceremony in May. The Dirt Track Walk of Fame is patterned after a similar Court of Legends in front of Smith Tower at Lowe's Motor Speedway. where such legendary motorsports figures as Richard Petty. David Pearson. Darrell Waltrip. Junior Johnson. Alan Kulwicki and Tim Flock have been similarly honored.
