Califomill L r C C [I r Foggy Petronas Racing will make their first public shoWing at the Brands Hatch round of the World Superbike Championship, July 26-28, according to the team. Four-time World Champion Carl Fogarty and his team will be at the British circuit to show off the newly launched Foggy FPl race bike ahead of their intensive winter testing program, the release states. The team has now rescheduled their race debut for the start of the 2003 season, having initially set a target of racing in the final half of 2002. Road versions of the Foggy FPl race bike are being built by Petronas in their long-term program to manufacture the first Malaysian race-bred Superbike, according to the team. "The whole idea of the manufacturing project is to build a road bike based on racing excellence," Fogarty said. "So it does not really make sen~e to rush our testing program, which is also so crucial to the thorough development of the Foggy FPl road bike, just so that we could have competed in the few remaining races this year. Everyone involved in this project wanted to race at the earliest possible opportunity, but we have decided that it was not worth sacrificing the overall aims of the project in order to satisfy the governing body's deadline. I am most disappointed for our two riders, James Haydon and Troy Corser. But they both have multi-year deals c o o o o o o o o o o and will have a more competitive bike to reward their patience when we do start racing after an extensive testing program." Former World Superbike Champion Troy Corser added: "Obviously, I am disappointed that I am not out on the race track this year due to the delays but, this wtri, I hope we can put all our resources into an extensive test program for the rest of the year so we can challenge for the 2003 championship from the first race of the year. That's my goal." FIM homologation requires that 75 road versions of a race bike have to be built by certain dead· lines in order for teams to compete in the World Superbike Championship. Road racer Eric Wood claimed that dyno operators ruined his engine by run· ning it too many times, and at too high of a temperature, after he'd qualified fourth for the Unlimited Superbike race dUring the Formula USA event at Mosport International Raceway (see coverage elsewhere in this issue). The numbers are in dispute, but the facts aren·t. After his qualifying run, Wood had to run his "14K the Movie" Suzuki GSX·R750 on the Dynojet dynamometer. Standard procedure is for the dyno operator to run the engine until peak power falls off, usually four or fIVe runs. Wood says that his was given 10 or 12 runs and that it overheated and went into fail-safe mode. Race officials said he could have stopped it at any time. The engine runs at 195 degrees during normal racing conditions. though it can go as high as 220, Wood said. On the dyno, it ran as high as 250 degrees, Wood said. adding that the dyno operator or a race offiCial should have allowed it to cool down between runs. The explanation from race officials was that the Suzuki had a dangling switch connector which the team uses to collect data from the engine's diagnostic system. The number of runs was elevated because they had to run it with connector's switch in various positions. "We've never had a dangling switch before," Parts Canada Superbike Championship organizer Colin Fraser said. Wood claimed that. when he left home, the motor made 142 horsepower on the dyno. After the dyno run at Mosport, it made 134.8. Fraser said that the machine made 137.2 horsepower after the qualifying run, and 135.1 after the second race. Either way, Wood said he had a motorcycle that didn't acceler- ate. "There was a big hole in the midrange," he said. "I was by far the slowest bike in the draft. " Wood explained that he thought the rings were damaged, and that the motor had lost compression. It had been rebuilt before the previous race at Loudon. "When it loses compression, the acceleration is dead. You storm into the comers, but lose it on the straights. We have to rebuild it for Road America. " Want to get a set of Ben Bostrom's I_the...? You can by participating in the USCRA (United States Classic Racing Association) benefit auction for fellow club member Todd Henning, who was severely injured three years ago at the Sears Point AHRMA National Road Race. Henning is well respected throughout the vintage road racing scene, and his nearfatal accident has, according to club members, left a void in the racing scene at' NHIS in Loudon. New Hampshire. USCRA has raised money over the last two years (through private donations) to help ease the Henning family's financial burden. Club members and corporate sponsors have donated products to be auctioned off during our August 2-4 vintage road race weekend at NHIS. Alpinestars has donated a recently retired set of Bostrom's leathers, which were campaigned in the World Superbike Series in Europe. Saturday night will feature bum-out pits and "wild man" Andy jumping his hand-shifted antique Harley through a flaming wall of fire. For more information, call 231/828-6360. CN
