MN, JUNE 23 Cory Keeney was flawless in his finishes at round four of the Spring Creek Super Series, winning all motos he entered in the 125cc A, 250cc A and Over 25 A ciasses, going six for six on the day on his Pro Action/Cannon Power Suzukis. It was also a good payday for Keeney. as it was a Suzuki contingency event. Some 671 entries made it out for the event. sponsored by CZlnnon Power Sports of Cannon Falls. Some of those entries would be people from out of state who stayed the weekend after attending the Racer X Vet National held on Saturday. Friday practice was unfortunately canceled due to heavy fZlins. which resulted in flooding in nearby counties. After a hot and humid Sat- urday, the rain returned Sunday morning, which left many questioning whether the event could be even pulled off. Track owner John Martin remained optimistic, and he had his crew working hard at getting the track in ridable shape for the opening motos, and by midday the track was excellent. Pat Donaho got the holeshot in the first 250cc A moto on his Premier Building and Contracting/GPS Racing-backed CRF450R and led the first half-lap until Keeney got by on his RM250. Keeney went on for the moto win in the 24-rider field, as Travis Oellien moved past Donaho into second place late in the moto. Donaho took third. Todd Ellingson of Wisconsin RlIpids. Wisconsin, took fourth on his CRF450R, with Bill Medek fifth on a YZ250 and John Dehn sixth on a FBF/Heinen and Mason Husky. In moto two, Keeney again took the win with relative ease. Pro snowcrosser Carl Schubitzke placed second after a first-moto ninth. Donaho was a consistent third, which was good enough for second overall. Matt Maier of Hartford, Wisconsin, took fourth after a first-moto 12th. Lee Theis was fifth and Ellingson sixth. Keeney won the Over 25 A contest in simi· lar fashion: by being toward the front at the start and then moving into the lead on the first 92 JULY 31, 2002' cue lap for the wins. Mike Luoma was second overall via a 4-2 moto score on a well-worn 2001 CR125 backed by MSR, TMR, Scott, GPS, and Larson's Cycle, just squeaking past Donaho for second overall. Donaho scored 3-3 for third overall. Ellingson was fourth with 5-4 finishes, and Troy Goehrs. on a River Valley YZ, claimed fifth overall with a 2-7 score. In Vet A action, new dad Jay Mercill claimed the overall with a 1-1 score on a YZ250F. Recently becoming a dad for the first time on June 13 didn't seem to slow Mercill, who stated his new son will be the "l25cc National champ in 2018: James Ricci of Hancon, Wisconsin, claimed second overall in the class with a 3-2 tally, over Matt Blaiser (5-3). • • MICRO MINI SHAfT (4-6): 1. Troy TROY, OH, JUNE 23 With a break in the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship Series, former local Joe Oehlhof came back home from Corona, California. to take in a big race at Kenworthy's Motocross Park in western Ohio. Though he was on a Honda CRF450R and therefore not able to take part in the lavish contingency program offered by Ff.S and Suzuki as part of this District I 1 Spring Series -Oehlhof still went home from round six with some money in his pocket. The "Wizard of Wapakoneta" still has plenty of fans in the area, as they cheered on Oehlhof as he romped through the Over 25 A class and the highly charged 250cc A ciass. Oehlhof seemed glad to be back in his old stomping grounds. "Yep, it's good to be home, and I'm just trying to stay sharp and keep up with my training during this break in the series," he said. "This Honda 450F has been tremendous. I love it!" The relaxed and smiling Oehlhof simply rocked Kenworthy's obstacle-laden circuit, slipping off with masterful holeshots and thundering away to four unchallenged moto victories. The bottom line was that no one, on this day, was able to match Oehlhors pace. The runner-up in the 250cc A class, behind Oehlhof, was Yamaha-mounted Chris Whitcraft, who had an incredible day. In the first moto of the 1250c A class, Whitcraft shut the door on Suzuki jockey Justin Buckelew at the start of the race, just before the tunnel jump, with Bradley Strunk falling in behind him. Whitcraft led until the white-flag lap, when he slipped up in the far back section of the track. Buckelew moved around Strunk to take the win, while Whitcraft remounted to take third, behind second-placed Strunk. "It's going pretty good," said Buckelew, a surprise entry at this event. "I got stuck in some traffic for most of the moto. These guys are going fast! Fortunately, the leader (Whitcraft) went down, then I got by 23 (StrunkJ, and it was a good race. I feel comfortable here; it's tacky, it's hot, too -very humid here! I'm just trying to get some track time and race..... With Buckelew, Wisconsin Husky rider Dave Oettel, and a throng of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky fast guys on hand, the A classes were stacked. Moto two of the 125cc A class was all about Whitcraft. Charlie Dunaway ran second and Christian Moist was running third, After a couple laps, everybody sorted themseives out. and Whitcraft now had a nice lead over Dun· away, while Buckelew was now third and Strunk fourth. As the 19-rider field crossed the finish line, it was Whitcraft with the win, with 85 (12- 15); t. loch Am.. (Su»; 2. C..." S1.vlk (Su»; 3. Cody Adams (Vam). 125 A: 1. Jusun Buckelew (Suz): 2. Fort Scott Hare Scrambles Park Stone Again at Forward Motion HS BY SHARON JONES FORT SCOlT, KS, JUNE 23 Taking his second win of the series, Doug Stone put his Stone Works Honda in the victo· ry circle at Fort Scott Hare Scrambles Park. On the start of the M class, Terry Gilliland took the holeshot, with Jamie Driskell from Des Moines, Iowa, in second. Rich Anderson held down third until he crashed, leaving his spot to 17-year-old Caleb Wohletz, who was riding his dad's KTM 400. In the meantime, all eyes were on Stone, who let the entire class go before he left the starting area. However, by the third lap, Stone was leading and pulling away. "I thought it would be more interesting to start last, just to give myself a challenge: Stone said later with a wry grin. "Everyone kept making mistakes and crashing, and I just rode past. Gilliland was leading. I showed him a wheel and he just let me by. I just tumed it up a little after that: Stone won the race by 2 1/2 minutes over YZ250-mounted Driskell, with Wohletz not too far back in third. On the start of the A class, Brad Jones took the hoieshot, Paul Dipasquale, on his Santa Fe Trail Cycle machine, was second, and Cycle Zone's Ryan King was third. Dipasquale showed Jones a wheel but contin· ued in second. Letko·sponsored David Dillingham was on fire as he blazed through the pack on his 250cc Husky.
