Eddie Mulder's West Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series Round 2: Tulare Cycle Pf(1rk STORY AND PHOTOS BY JAMEY BLUNT rULARE,CA,JUNE29 ENTURA CANCELED! This was the shockwave that rocked the flat-track community! It was also unacceptable to Eddie Mulder. You see, when Mulder makes a commitment to sponsors and riders alike, you can bank on it! So, with just two weeks to make arrangements for another racetrack, Eddie put his head down and went to work. He did whatever it took and secured the Tulare Cycle Park from Steve Munger so that, on this hot Saturday in June, the 159 entrants who would have been at Ventura Raceway now packed the pits at Tulare Cycle Park in central California for round two of the Barnett/Maxxis Tires Eddie Mulder West Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series. With colorful Motion-Pro and K&N banners lining the front straight of this beautifully prepared quarter-mile clay oval, practice commenced at 5 p.m.; by 6:30, the heats were posted at the A&A Racing Tent, and the racing started. A total of 20 heat races were concluded by 9 p.m. without mishap. A short intermission allowed the hardworking scorers time to transfer racers to their earned spots on the gird in their main events. This also allowed time for the more than1700 fans who had come through the gates a chance to acquire an Eddie Mulder T-shirt, which changes for every race. The Shoei Helmets Senior main led things off, the seniors being riders 50 years of age or older on 1974-orearlier motorcycles of their choosing. Bob Scally put his 750cc Triumph up front off the line over heat-race winner Marty Lewis. Bob Graves, out of Hemet, California, ran third, making it three Triumphs up front. Lewis was okay, but his race was finished. Scally, without pressure now, continued for the win. Lewis' disappearance advanced Graves to the second spot, with Triumph rider Bill Flett picking up third. JRC Engineering and Saddle men sponsored the Youth classes. Mulder runs a 50cc, 60cc, 80cc and 100cc program, and on this night, the 80cc main was the fastest. Steve Bonsey from Salinas, California, was the heat-race winner and had the pick of staring position for the main event. This didn't matter to Frankie Garcia, who took the lead from the drop of the flag. Bonsey was second, with 60cc main-event winner David Fee in third. At the halfway point, less than a bikelength separated the two leaders. Garcia, mistake-free, still maintained his lead. With one lap remain-
