--- - -- I j World Championship Road Race Series __ 0 ... ~-~ Round 9: German Gran r' d " L!::.P~ ~e .: rix ft ISS) ninth, wtth RegIs UoonI CIIIF Elias (Honda) and Battaini (Aprilia), Battaini was the first to get by, but it was Elias who took control two laps before the end, and at the finish Matsudo was again ahead of Battaini, the trio crossing the line within fOUT tenths of a second, Ralf Waldmann (Aprilia) had fought his way through the next gang and was a couple of seconds clear of Alex Debon (Aprilia) and Shahrol Yuzy (Yamaha) at the finish, Haruchika Aoki (Honda) had been with them, but was at the back of the group when he crashed heavily on lap 16, The closest fight was for the last championship points, a gang of seven and then six hard at it, swapping back and forth. On the crucial 22nd lap, German rookie Dirk Heidolf (Aprilia) was in front of British Honda teammates Leon Haslam and Jay Vincent, David Checa (Aprilia) and Taro Sekiguchi (Yamaha), the six covered by one second, and erstwhile companion Raul Jara (Aprilia) less than two seconds behind, Sekiguchi was the unlucky one, missing the final point by half-a-second, Melandri goes into the summer break on 170 points, with Nieto on 145, Rolfo on 127, Battaini on 88 and Elias catching up on 86. 125cc GRAND PRIX Vincent got the jump, from Sanna, de Angelis and Rodriguez, with second qualifier Poggiali slow off the line and consumed by the pack into turn one. By the end of the lap, the champion was 15th, Vincent maintained control, if only by inches, for the rest of the race, he and de Angelis starting to pull clear early on, with Sanna losing second on lap four. The leaders were glued together until the last corners, where Vincent's tactics were flawless. De Angelis moved inside into the penultimate right, but on the way into the next one he stayed out wide, giving Vincent the room for an early entry and control of the exit. "I tried to set a good pace for the start, but it was hard because it was much hotter than practice," said Vincent. "Then I saw that only de Angelis 20 JULv31. 2002' cue I D could come with me. At the end he attacked, but I was able to get back at him." De Angelis was happy with his first podium. "It's the fruit of many years sacrifice from myself and my family," the 18-year-old San Marino rider said. Sanna had fallen back into the hands of Jenkner and Dani Pedrosa (Honda), with Nieto joining the group by lap 10. By then, Poggiali had forged through the next big group and was working impressively on closing a gap of more than four seconds. It took him just four laps, and then the battle was on. Jenkner had most of the leading of the quintet, with Pedrosa up to third with 10 laps left, responding to the threat of his championship rival. One lap later, Poggiali was in front, and a lap after that Pedrosa's over-worked tires dropped him to the back of the gant. From then on, he and Sanna lost ground to the finish, Sanna sixth and Pedrosa seventh at the end. The remaining three were hard at it all the way, Jenkner's refusal to be intimidated by Poggiali, giving him a fine last rostrum spot, equaling his best-ever finish. "To do this at home is a dream come true," he said. Derbi's Youichi Ui led the next fierce group in, from Mika Kallio (Honda), Gino Borsoi (Aprilia), Joan Olive (Honda) and Mirko Giansanti (Honda). The next trio was another 15 seconds back, with Dovizioso (Honda) heading Rodriguez (Aprilia) and Azuma (Honda) for the last points. Vincent closed to within seven points of Poggiali in the championship, 153-160; with Pedrosa on 140. Jenkner is fourth on 96; Cecchinello crashed out of a poor posieN tion for no points, and has 91. &ennln &rand Prix Sachsenring.&ennlny Results: July 21, 2002 J 25 Q(JAlIFYING: I.
