up for their second final of the weekend and Carroll was able to re-set his own elapsed-time record to an 8.012 at 167 mph as Schnitz took the runner-up with an 8.48 at 155 mph. Like Carroll in Formula Superbike, Schnitz has been the man to beat in the Zero Gravity 600 SuperSport class. Schnitz took the pole at Norwalk with a 9.80 at 134 mph on the Team Kawasaki ZX-6R followed by the hardest working rider in the class, Pat Leonard, on the Del's Performance/Lenc Brothers ZX-6R at 9.97. Eddie Krawiec and Chip Hunter were the only other riders to qualify in the nine-second zone. Schnitz took the Virginia win over Krawiec, 9.83 to 10.16, and made his march to the Norwalk final after getting by Leonard in the semifinals. Again, Schnitz met Krawiec in the final and again the result was the same, this time with Schnitz getting the win 9.83 to Krawiec's 10.03. In the Yamaha Hot Rod Cruiser class, Rick McWaters has overcome the record-setting performances of Mark Underwood on the Patrick Racing Yamaha Warrior to remain undefeated on his Terry Reed-prepared Harley-Davidson Sportster. In the Virginia final, Underwood got the holeshot over McWaters but both bikes struggled down track with McWaters taking the win 10.23 to 10.51. Underwood took the numberone qualifying position for Norwalk with a 9.92, followed by McWaters at 9.97. They met in the final with McWaters this time getting a huge holeshot - enough to turn back Underwood's quicker 9.98 with a 10.05 elapsed time. The star of the sportsman classes was multi-time champion Mike Konopacki. Konopacki, who competes in four classes on three different Kawasakis, scored an unprecedented triple - three wins at the same event - taking victories in the Schnitz Top Gas, RC Components Super Gas and Pingel Pro E.T. series. A handful of riders (including Konopacki himself) have scored double wins, but this was the first time any rider had won three classes in one event. eN 3RD ANNUAL CHARLOTTE GRAND NATIONAL Last year's race was the BEST half-mile in . historv!
