Central Oregon Motocross Series Round 1: Madras Motocross Park Sannan Has It His Way! By etAy LIGHT ~nn,:uc:hQuw Tr"UC:W5 U5 nnOTOC:r"055 MADRAS, OR, JUNE 23 KTM-mounted Pete Sannan had things going his way at the opening round of the Central Oregon Summer Motocross Series, as the 15-year-old from Albany, Oregon, hammered the competition in the 125cc and Before The Hill Intermediate classes at the recently reopened Madras Motocross Park. ~"o norloneu_ WlC2C2WC2nd Thur"'5dow 'IOTh - Gate open at 5pm Fr"'ldow 'CiTh - Donny Schmit Memorial Race Sign-Up: 6am " 9 am, Practice" Bam, Races" Bam Sannan had tough competition from Suzuki-mounted Jeremy Mickelson in both classes. Mickelson was the rider with the best chance of beating Sannan (and he did on one occasion), but Sannan, who was struggling with a bout with pneumonia, had all of the right answers for his fellow northern Oregonian. Local Honda rider Danny Costa grabbed the lead out of the chute in the first Before The Hill Junior/Intermediate moto - the first moto of the day - but it took Sannan less than a lap to 50TUr"'dow '''Th - Open Practice Only Sign-Up: 6am, Ride" Bam, Fee" $20 Women's Pro Motocross, 12" 2pm Pro Qualifying 3 " 7pm Fireworks Display 10pm drop Costa to second. Costa was then faced by challenges from both Mickelson and Yamaha YZ250F pilot Heath Voegeie, However, Voegele dropped both Costa and Mickelson back late in the moto to trail Sannan, which was good for the top Junior-class position, behind the lone Intermediate, Sannan. Local rider Ryan Hop· son filled out the top five. Mickelson put his RM250 at the front of the pack in moto two, followed by Costa and Sannan. While Sannan was quick to displace Costa for second, that would be as far as Sannan would get. Mickelson slammed the door on all of Sannan's challenges to hand Sannan his lone moto loss of the day. Both riders, though, would snare overall class wins, as Mickelson topped the Junior portion and Sannan landed the Intermediate-class victory. "That was a pretty tough race, n Sannan said at the finish. ") just didn't have the strength. that I usually do late in the mota, since I've been so sick lately." That was Sannan's weakest point of the day, as he would later come back to decimate the competition in the combined 125/250cc Intermediate and Junior motos. Sannan grabbed the lead in the opening moments of mota one and, much like in his earlier Before The Hill motos, had Mickelson to deal with. Mickelson pushed Sannan throughout the mota, but this time he came up short of victory. Kawasaki rider Jason York trailed the duo and finished second to Mickeison in the 250cc Junior portion. Mota two saw Mickelson jump out in front of the field, followed by Sannan and Suzuki rider Chance Phipps. Mickelson led the first three laps, but Sannan took the lead on lap four and kept it for the remainder of the mota to snare his second of two overall wins. Mickelson's close second-place finjsh earned him his second overall win as well - in the 250cc Junior class - followed by the overall 125cc Junior rider, Costa. York (2-2) and Suzuki rider Aaron Haston (3-3) filled out the top three in the 250cc class. Costa (2-1), Voegele (1-4) Phipps (4-2), Jonathan McGillivray (3-3) and Kevin Hagerty (5-5) rounded out the top five in the 125cc Junior class overall. Yamaha rider Justin Green scored a win in the day's largest class, the 125cc Beginner class. Green grabbed the lead at the starts of both motos and never looked back in his dual wins. Kawasaki rider Steven Hagerty trailed Green in moto one, but Hagerty could only muster a sixth-place finish in mota two. Branden Pittman ran second to Green in mota two and earned second overall with a 3-2 tally, ahead of Shemaiah Gilian, the third-place finisher overall via 5-3 placings. Kawasaki-mounted Nathan Whitlow dominated both Supermini motos and was a threemoto winner on the day, after also capturing a win in the first aocc Age Group mota. Suzuki rider Ben Anglen was Whitlow's closest competition all day long and finished second overall to Whitlow in the Supermini class, although he finished ahead of Whitlow overall in the eocc (l2-13) class. Blake Anglen - who, like his brother Ben, was Suzuki-mounted - finished third overall in both classes. Sarah Costa and Amy Light split moto wins in the Women's class, but it was the Yamaha-mounted Light who won moto two as 5und-=u., ~UCSU5T 1liiTH Pro Practice 9am Qualifying 10:30am, Race 1pm Awards 5:15pm Autographs & Auction 5:30pm ~DUNLD;; 7RADIAl ROVER .1..1(J_Hiii'''''iii'lln:Y,f~ .
