WEBB JACKSBORO, TX, JUNE 15-16 The Lamberts' 4-L Ranch provides a large variety of terrain to challenge the skills of TCCRA racers. With nine racers in the lam- bert family, ranging in age from 7 to 52, they know how to put together a track. The course consisted of fast straights, rocky uphills and downhills, tight sections of woods, and an exciting flat-track-style start. Since last year's TCCRA race and a TORO winter race were run on this track, they switched directions and ran the course backwards. This property is a good place to race for many reasons, not the least of which is its ability to absorb water. Practice on Saturday featured very dry, dusty, low-visibility conditions, with riders running blind at times. However, a storm blew in late Saturday night, fueied by more-that- 70-mph Winds, and changed ali that. Most properties wouid have turned into a swamp from all the driving rain the previous night; this one just ended up with a few slippery spots and a couple of small mudholes that for the most part were gone by the time the ladies and minis took over the track at noon. One of the slickest portions became apparent when the flag dropped for the Pro race on Sunday morning. The start, as men- tioned, was f1at-track-sty!e: a tight left and then two long, sweeping right-handers through a wide-open field with a left at the tree line that dipped into the woods. During the Ladies and Minis program, Over 35 Women's Expert Laura Rafael garnered her 'lead' on the e-score readout," Cycle Suspension's Rafael said, "I was pumped beyond measure!" The win puts Rafael in a tie for second in Franklin First Again! 68 and won the Pro class that year," Joiner first win in more than] 0 years. In the afternoon Amateur program, Allan of their throttle, the Pros screamed through the field of shallow mud with their rear tires catching up to the fronts, just barely hanging on. Cycle Town South/Moose/Michelin{fhumper Racing-sponsored Haydn Franklin dipped into the woods first, on his KTM 450. The 28-year-old led until he got into some traffic McDonald, contesting the 200cc class, took hold of a huge first-place finish - one of three this season, but one that pulls him to within four points of leader John Dickey. "John [Dickey) and I were back and forth the entire racel" McDonald said. "It was by far the coolest race yeti" After round nine in Dallas, Texas, and the summer break, the series will resume in during the second lap, crashed, and was South Bryson, Texas, on August 24 and 25. I didn't even see it, but I knew he was going for it. He must have crashed, because I didn't hear him again." Hoenshell held on to second place, while Ajax Kawasaki KTM/Spring Maker/Turf's VPfMom and Dad and Uncle Randy-backed Tony Joiner, a 17 -year-old from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, took third place. "I really didn't think I would be able to make up all the time I was losing by crashing so much," Joiner said...) even came into the pits for fresh goggles and dumped it right in front of my dad - stupid! But somehow I made my way into third place, and I knew Clay and Haydn were too far out in front to catch, so I rode smart at a comfortable pace and held on until the finish." This is a young man with a bright future in cross country racing - if he can stay healthy. "'Yeah, I've had some injuries that have held me back," Joiner admitted.
