NELSONVILLE, OH, JUNE 15 Promoter Drew Wolfe had one heck of a week preparing for his AMA Loretta Lynn's Youth Regional Qualifier race. The river beside the track had overrun his racecourse, leaving him just a few days to finish assembling the circuit, drain the parking area, and prepare for thjs huge event. By the weekend, the moisture had marinated into the soil, 800 or so riders and their entourages had appeared, and the races were under way! This final stepping stone on the way to the AMA Loretta Lynn's Amateur Motocross Nationals always proves to be a strenuous and often stressful situation. With the massive amount of talented racers vying for the handful of invitations to Tennessee's "big dance," things get very sketchy at these mon· steT events. While the facility's new motocross course wasn't officially completed until the Friday prior to the event, every racer had an equal chance on this course, as nobody had ever ridden it before, and all bets were off as to who the favorites were· although, with the new and spongy condition of the course, those who could navigate in the mud, ruts or moist con· ditions were at an advantage. Local young Ohio riders, especially from the hosting AMA District 11, were extremely impressive at this gargantuan event, with many taking the three-mota-format overalls in their respective classes. Team Green's Justin Weeks from Cincinnati, Ohio, was the champion of the 65cc (10-11) group, pounding away at the tough track all weekend on his KX65. Marengo's Tyler Bowers was another District 11 racer on the fuel; he posted the overall in the 85cc (7-11) class. "Jammin' Joey" Results: June 15, 2002 51 (4-6); I. Tyler McSwain (Cob): 2. Dylan Kaelin stormed his King Cobra 50 home for the 50cc (7-8) class overall. In the Yamaha-fueled Oil-injected 50cc class, it was a big win for Matt Cox, with Tyler McSwain spanking the fieid of 50cc (4-6) racers on his Cobra CM50. Leadbeater was the major force in the 85cc (12-13) group, as he was amazingly fast all weekend, winning his qualifier as well as the overall. F&S Suzuki's Zach Ames was second in this class, behind fellow District 11 racer Leadbeater. Ames went on to have success in the 85cc Modified (9- 13) division, ripping off the overall on his Ronnie Rehmert-tuned RM85. Another local boy, Logan's Levi Kilbarger, was the runner-up in this ctass. Thornville, Ohio's Michael Willard put his head down and tore around the tree-lined course, smoking the 85cc Modified (14-15) contingent. Willard would fall to Ames in the Supermini contest, however, as Ames was once again champion in the 10Scc class, with Willard in the second spot. In the Women's classes, Aaron Miller of Lambertville, Michigan, took the 10-1 05cc (12-15) overall, with Heidi MacTavish, aiso of Michigan, in second. The Women's 105125cc-and-Up group would see Florida's April Hodges scorch the gathering of speedy gals, while Illinois' fast Cara Chada took second. Worth noting was the consistent and impres~ sive rides of Paris, Ohio's Kimberly Kocher, who powered her Kawasakis to two third~place overalls in the Women's divisions. The fastest classes of the day - the almost Pro-like 125cc Schoolboy (12-15) divisions were all about Michigan's Nick Adams, who won the Modified class and then went 1·1DNF in the Stock class, allowing Florida's Matt Boni the overall victory. Boni also got second in the Modified group, behind Adams. Navarre, Ohio's A.J. Hattery was incredible all weekend long in these fast Schoolboy races, notching a second in the Stock division and a third in the Modified division. Awendaw, South Carolina's P.J. Beat The Heat Summer Series Round 1: North Florida MX Park McKenzie & Extreme Team Put On a Show By CRAIG JOHNSON HILLIARD, FL, JUNE 15 The afternoon was filled with excitement as the first round of the Beat The Heat Summer Series and got under way. Following the racing action that evening, the East Coast Extreme Team put on a Freestyle Exhibition. It was a hot afternoon, but when the sun got lower, everyone cooled off· but the racing action only got hotter. In the combined 16-29 and I 25cc Youth contest, Dustin McKenzie put on a show for the spectators as they lined the fence. Brian Gray pulled the first-mota holeshot in a practice run for the upcoming Money class. Following Gray were Jimmy Tyson, McKenzie, Lance Stalls, Jeffrey Tyson and George Masden. As Gray pulled away, the battle for second heated up on the track. Jimmy, McKenzie and Stalls ail bunched up to make a run for the runner·up spot. At the halfway mark, McKenzie found an opening and got around Jimmy. The three stayed wheel to wheel, in that order, until the checkered flag fiew. Jeffrey finished first in the 125cc Youth portion, followed by Kevin Edgar. Chad Robertson found his way around Masden to take fifth in the 16-29 class. The second moto was a barn-burner to the very end. Jimmy jumped out front, followed by McKenzie. Third was Masden, holding back Jeffrey, and Robertson was fifth. McKenzie looked for a way around Jimmy the whole mota. It finally came down to the start straight on the last lap. With only two corners to go, McKenzie held the gas on to the long tabletop. When they reached the back corner, McKenzie snatched the lead from Jimmy. The two finished in that order. Jeffrey cruised in third on the track and first in the 125cc Youth class, as he had passed Masden. The next battle was for fourth on the track. Robertson finished fifth, and Masden finished sixth. Jake Raikes pulled the holeshot in the first combined Pee Wee and XR50 moto, only to fall and drop to third. Taking over the lead was Dillon Smith, followed by Donnie Lowe. Fourth and fifth were Brooke Street and Crystal Collins, respectively. Raikes remounted and before the halfway mark he was challenging Lowe for second on the track and first in the Pee Wee 50cc class. Raikes made the pass, while Smith cruised to the win. Lowe finished third. Street was fourth until the last lap, when Tyler Powell passed her over the long tabletop. Raikes made no mistakes in the second moto and won, over Smith. Lowe ran a lonely third, as Tyler Rhode ran in the fourth spot. Street rounded out the top five. In the combined Over 30 and 40 ciasses, David Brewer nailed the holeshot, followed by Alan Assaf, Matt Powell, Mark Thomas and Mike ReiUy. Brewer pulled away in the lead, and Assaf did the same in second. Powell held off Thomas until the last lap for third. Thomas made the pass, and it was for the lead in the cue. e Over 40 class. Reilly fell partway through the mota, handing fifth to Kyle Congar. Brewer was out front in the second mota, followed by Assaf. The two ran away from the rest of the pack. Powell ran third, followed by David Johnson, Thomas, Reilly and Conger. Thomas moved past Johnson and pressured Poweli for the lead in the Over 40 class. Thomas made the pass on the last lap. Johnson finished behind the two, as Conger and Clark Geissmann filed in behind. In the first 125cc Beginner mota, all the riders battled tooth and nail. Kevin Edgar won a tight battle over Will Spicer and Brad Causey in the first moto. Christopher Mills and Ken Mcllresh rounded out the top five. In the second moto, Mcllresh led the pack, followed by Edgar, Spicer, Causey and Mills. Spicer got by Edgar and set his sights on Mcllresh for the lead. Mills dropped back to fifth as the top four stayed tight. Mcllresh made a mistake and dropped two places, letting Causey and Edgar by. Mills started gaining on the lead pack and passed Mcllresh. The order at the flag was Spicer, Causey, Edgar, Mills and Mcllresh. At the end of the night, the East Coast Extreme Team put on a terrific show for the spectators. Bubba and riders Kenny Yoho, Travis Willis and Rudy Waller did anything and everything one can do on a motorcycle. There were can·cans, heel-clickers, Cordovas, Supermans, Hart Attacks, and just too many others to mention. They were also there to film part of the next "Crusty Demons of Dirt" series, "The 8th Dimension." North Florida Motocross Park Hilliard, Florida Results: June 15, 2002 (Round 11 P/W 50: 1.
