my Own Race: 250cc 1] § Tim Ferry The Team Yamaha rider went down in the first tum of the first moto and started in 40th before getting going and falling three more times. "I feU four times in that first enoto, and I don't know why," Ferry said. "I started about 12th in the second mota, passed a bunch of guys and was dosing the gap on RC, but went down after the mechanics' area. I lost a few positions and then passed LaRocco, but my starts are just killing me." Ferry is still in second in the points, but is now 87 points down. ~@ Kyle Lewis tD~ Paul Carpenter ®{] Craig Decker "It was not a good day," said the Moto XXX manager, who went 7-7 for seventh overall, his worst finish of the year so far. "My back and leg still hurt from a practice crash at Red Bud where I compressed my L-four and L-five vertebrae," he said. "It was a good day for our Mota XXX team, though, plus 1 gained on Dowd and Vuillemin because of their bad days today." Lewis was recognized as the second 250cc privateer and was awarded $750 from U.S. Tobacco. The White Bros.-backed Honda four-stroke pilot who has been competing in the four-stroke Nationals this year opened some eyes with his strong starts and soJid first-moto sixth. The New York native ran third for several laps before succumbing to such names as LaRocco, TorteJli and Lusk. He eamed a $500 bonus for the first-mota holeshot and finished 11th in the second moto for eighth overall. Even though Carpenter races only select rounds, he is still - amaZingly - 12th in points. The privateer from Palm Desert, California, is back on the National tour for the first time since 1997 and is posting some decent results. His 14- 19 rides for 17th overall were not his best of the year, but still keep the Mach One rider in the running. "In the first mota, I was running in 10th, and I messed up in the whoop section and then later tangled with Keith Johnson. Then I got in a pileup in the second comer of the second moto and had to catch up to 19th." Decker is currently 13th in the points standings. §tD Ryan Clark Solitaire, Clark went 15-21 for 20th overall. "I got ruined in the Now going solo as Team first tum and came through the pae,k in the first one for 15th," he said. "In the second moto, I tried to wheelle over a downed rider and ended up looping out." Clark holds 20th in the points and wants to be in the Suzuki rig worse than anyone! . ~® NickWey ~0 Nathan Ramsey @@ Clark Stiles Moto XXX's Wey was 11th overall with a 10-15 score. "I came from 25th up to 10th in the first mota and crashed in the second mota," Wey said "I need better starts, and I've been working on my stamina, so it's getting better." (Above) Ricky Cannlchael gives his tuner Chad Watts a lift back to the pits after winning both 250cc motos again. (Right) Sebastien Tortelli made it a Honda 1·2 sweep. "Nate Dog" was looking to back up his solid Red Bud podium performance, but it waS not to be. The Team Honda rider rode in second for much of the first moto and was impressive, but laRocco passed him for second just past the halfway mark. While in third, Ramsey's thumper seized. "The bike locked up, and I just went off the track," he said. After the Honda technicians replaced the motor, Ramsey stalled the bike on an awkward corner in the first lap of the second moto and did not get going until he was in the 40th position. He worked up to ninth by the moto's end, but his 35-9 was only good enough for 14th overall. The little-known rider from Athens, Alabama, is having a solid year aboard his Max Pitts Honda CRF450R. Stiles rode to 13-14 finishes for 12th overall and said, "I had bad starts and had to work through the pack both times. I seem to always spin off the gate, where last year, on the KTM 520, I had those starts wired. I passed people all day, and I'm happy to be in the top 20 in points." may have held him from better finish- and Mota XXX privateer Kyle Lewis es, and one must wonder what the was seventh with a 7 - 7 tally. White Oklahoma privateer would do given Bros.' Paul Carpenter was eighth, and factory equipment again. He is sev- Mach One's Heath Voss was ninth. enth in points.
