(Left) Aaron had a day to forget on Saturday, logging four fives on the first loop alone; he redeemed himself on Sunday by taking the runner-up spot behind Crosset. (Above) Canadian Wilson Craig had his best finish of the series with a third on Saturday. Wilson was tied for second on Sunday after one loop. but a bad second lap dropped the Gas Gas rider to seventh. the exit. The real problem there was that you had to slam into the wall with enough speed to get over the top, which threw the bike into the air, causing it to lose momentum right at a critical point - the climb out over the jumble of rocks. Aaron went first and managed a three at the exit. Crosset had a slightly better ride for a two. Ray Peters, the master at finding new lines, found a line to the right of the wall that allowed him to keep his rear wheel closer to the ground and help maintain momentum. Ray's line paid off with a clean, and from that point on the main line was abandoned. Aaron and Crosset sparred throughout the day, with each rider trading good rides for bad. When Aaron would go clean, Crosset would dab and vice versa. At the end of two laps, the two were deadlocked at 16 points apiece, setting up a tense final lap. Crosset dabbed early on the final lap (section seven) but reeled off eight straight cleans to finish the lap with a single point and a total of 17 for the day. Aaron dabbed even earlier (a single point in section four), then posted eight cleans before arriving at section 13. "Wilson [Craig] had knocked a bunch of rocks down in the section and I didn't go up there and look at it and, of course, I damned near fived it," Aaron said of his final ride'at 13. "I should have paid more attention to it; it cost me the trial." A loose rock at the exit knocked the Gas Gas rider off line and it was all he could do to salvage a three. "That was it, what are you going do?" Aaron added. "I was fighting for it a little harder today and, even if [ got a little off course, I was fightin' it and gettin' it through." Crosset felt lucky to have taken the win, blaming his early mistakes on a loss of concentration and pressure from Aaron. "Today I had a very good day, but on the first loop I got two fives and it was difficult for me because Geoff rode very good," Crossett said. "I am happy to take the series lead." Peters matched Crosset's onepoint loop and finished in the third position with a total of 24, while Bell (27) and Fox (32) rounded out the top five. With four events remaining, Crosset leads the series with 166 points, followed by Aaron with 153 and Bell with 116. Ray Peters and Wilson Craig round out the top five with 115 and 94, respectively. BRIEFLY••• Shereo.s David Chaves. fifth in the series before Pennsylvania, was seen spectating and sporting a cast on his right hand. Chaves suffered a freak accident while riding two weeks ago with six-time National champ Ryan Young. Chavez was spotting for Young and had caught Young's bike when he did not make a huge undercut ledge. The bike was slipping from his grip and as he went to re-grip the bike caught traction and lunged. snagging his right hand and running it completely through the chain and sprocket and out the other side. He suffered damage to his index. middle. and ring fingers. The tip of his index finger was broken in half above the knuckle. Doctors putlwo pins in it, while the bone mends. and will eventually be removed. His middle finger was fractured below the knuckie and his ring finger had deep cuts below the knuckle but no breaks. David's doctors believe he will have a complete recovery. It was announced by promoter Ted Gansberger that the AMA will sanction the first U.S. National Indoor Championship. which will be held January 11, 2003. in San Francisco at the Cow Palace.
