Loretta Lynns Regional Qualifier Cedar Raceway Park Shawn Taylor was a double-class winner at the Loretta Lynn's Regional Qualifier In Cedar City, Utah, tasting victory in both the 125cc C Stock and Modified classes. Bv DICK GOODWIN PHOTOS BV WINDV SULLIVAN CEDAR CITY, aT, JUNE 8-9 d'AU ichael Blose traveled up from ,.!IY,l Phoenix, Arizona, to take his spot on the gate for the 125cc A/Pro Sport race at Cedar City on June 8 and 9. He didn't waste his gas, as he rocked the class with two solid efforts to take home the overall victory. This was the Loretta Lynn's Regional, where you had to earn your place on the line by doing good at one of the area qualifiers. Invitation only - no slow guys in sight here. California's Tim Weigand crashed the gate to lead race one. Blose was working his way forward. By midrace, Sport crown, besting Weigand, Hansen and Jonathan Shimp. Another racer with standout results on this busy weekend was Joshua Grant, rolling snake eyes to top the 105cc Supermini division. Hardcharging Derek Costella cracked open two classes - the 250cc Open B Stock and Modified divisions - as did Mike Alessi, locking up the 85cc Modified (9-13) and 85cc Stock (12-13) victories. Jesse Casillas was also double gold, going perfect in the 125cc A and 250cc Open A wars. Another double-dipper was Shawn Taylor, fighting through to nail down the 125cc Stock and Modified titles. Logan Darien was the heavy hitter in the Four-Stroke class, while Trent bar, Haughelstine, Sani and Ecklund pushed each other and produced a good lead. Further back, Collier was trying to hold off Suzuki's Derek Costella and Matthew Beavers for fourth. Haughelstine rolled, wrapping up race one, with Sani and Ecklund trailing. Honda hotshoe Ecklund put the pressure on early in moto two, blasting out in front of Haughelstine and Santa Rosa, California's Charlie Morrison. Costella got straight into it, passing Bryan Watson early on to join the lead pack. Ecklund continued to lead, with both Haughelstine and Costella hounding him. Ecklund began to stretch his lead, and things were looking up for the overall, if only he could get one guy between him and Haughelstine. Costella looked like he might be that guy, raging only an eyelash from Haughelstine's rear fender. Then disaster struck, as Ecklund bobbled and instantly dropped to fourth. Now Haughelstine was in the catbird seat; he didn't even have to beat Costella to take the overall. But to put an exclamation point on his fine ride, he stayed out in front anyway, taking his second straight win and the overall 125cc B Modified title. Costella's gritty second-moto ride would catapult him into second overall, besting Ecklund, Beavers and Morrison in the final standings. eN Cedar llKewa, Park Cedar City, Utah Results: June 8-9, 2002 he had caught Weigand. Passing him was a horse of a different color, however, and the two battled bar to bar for the remainder of the race, with Weigand pulling out a skinny win. Blose jumped out in front of Colorado leadfoot Josh Hansen to start the second half and kicked it into overdrive. Hansen was scratching and clawing, but Blose wouldn't crack. Weigand was charging in third, but his title hopes were fading. Nose to tail with Hansen for the entire race, Blose squeaked out a hard-earned victory, and the overall 125cc A/pro 48 JULv17.2002· cue I. Pugmire was impressive in the 65cc Stock (10-11) dust-up, and Jeff Emig, after dueling with the front-runners in the 250cc Open A/Pro Sport wars, smoked the Vet Over 30 class. Steven Haughelstine was hauling in the 125cc B Modified class. The San Marcos, California, speedster stuck his Yamaha in the winner's circle - times two. He swooped out in front of Daryl Ecklund to get things started off. Honda-mounted Daniel Sani was on the gas, making the pass for second, even as Sean Collier joined the lead group.
