CA, JUNE 7 Former Junior Speedway racer Chris "Krash" Kerr won his first Handicap main event of the Fast Fridays Speedway season. Kerr, whose entire family is thoroughly ensconced in the California Speedway motorcycle scene, left the track soon after the race headed to Southem Califomia for a fast-paced weekend of Speedway riding in Costa Mesa and Victorville. The Handicap win was anything but easy for Kerr, who had to wait out a considerable restart delay after Robert Curry went down in turn three on the third lap and had to be attended to by paramedics for a reported thumb injury. On the single-file restart, Kerr was stationed lilt the point, with Eric Carrillo, who had been battling Curry for the second spot prior to the red flag, a mere bikelength behind him. To the rear of Carrillo were "Flyin·" Mike' Faria, Bart "Simpson" Bast, and Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden, who had also gone down with Curry in the spill but was seemingly uninjured and was rewarded with a spot at the end of the line. On the restart, Kerr, riding his M Stepping Stone/Gray Construction/BGR Racing/Golden State Chiropractor Jawa, picked up right where he left off and, despite Carrillo's and then Faria's best efforts, was uncatchable on his way to starter Mark Joiner's checkered flag. Faria slid through in second, Bast got past Carrillo for third, and Bobby Hedden was fifth. JULY 10. 2002' Results SCR: I. Bart But (Jaw): 2. Mike Faria (.klw); 3. Chad Fe!iclo (JlIW); 4. Club Moto Triest Twists It at Club Moto Fast Fridays Speedway 92 Bast improved significantly on his thirdplace Handicap finish when he led the Scratch main from start to finish after an excellent gate out of starting grid number one, aboard his Seco/Auburn Toyota/Scott·s Auto Trim/Peterich Cycle/WWF Wendy Wallace Jawa. "It's about time I won a Scratch main this year," said the soft-spoken former National Champion. "We changed back to last year's frame and it made a big cfjfference, as you could see." Faria pulled off the second-best start, which eventually secured him the runner-up spot, ahead of Chad Felicio and Alan Christian, who took an embarrassing but apparently insignificant spill just inches shy of the finish line. Faria finished second in both main events. In Division Two, Applegate's Chris Olney held off Jon Curry to take home the victory. Richard Christian won his second Division Three main of the season (and of his young racing career) with a wild last-turn pass on Dennis Chandler, who led the first four laps. The Division One Youth main event was taken by 2001 Junior Champion T.J. Fowler, who was ultimately faster and pushier than early leader Mark Carrillo, who ended up in third place, behind Alex Marcucci. Ricky Felicio beat Jay Rickets in the dash for the Division Two Youth trophy, and Jesse Becerra won a very close battle with Ron Woodsford Jr. over the rights to the Division Three prize. In the second round of the Challenge elimination scratch series, Bobby Hedden scored a tidy win over "Suicide" Scott Brant in the two-lap match race; he will join first-round winner Faria in the Challenge Championship on August 23. cue I e By RANDY HElM UVERMORE, CA, JUNE 7 Club Moto provided plenty of action this week for spectators who drove out to watch round two of Mutant Motorsports' Friday Night Series. Sweatshirts were required, as a breeze kicked in right around sundown. Orinda's Kris Triest made sure the competition knew his intentions by posting overall 60 BEG: I. MlIMew Cochran (Kaw); 2. Tyler Irwin (KlIw); 3. wins in the 125cc and 250cc Novice classes. Triest. a Club Moto regular, used his knowledge of the track to win all four motos. In moto one of the 125cc Novice class. Suzuki jockey Cameron Bowman led early. with Triest in second and Brian Dominguez in third. Bowman led for two laps before having problems and pulling out. Yamaha-mounted Triest took the lead, with Suzuki-mounted Dominguez in second. On lap three, Jason Cameron slipped past Dominguez for second. Triest held on for the win, Cameron kept on the gas for second, and Dominguez finished third. The start of moto two belonged to C.J. Maria, who took the early lead, with Cameron and Triest keeping the pressure on. Maria stayed out front for two laps before being overtaken by Cameron and Triest on lap three. Cameron had the lead until Triest man~ aged a last-lap pass to take the lead. Triest took the checkers, with Cameron finishing second and Maria holding on for third. The top three overall were Triest (1-1), Cameron (2·2) and Maria (4-3). The 250cc Novice class saw some of the same riders from the 125cc class battling again, Triest pulled another great start in moto one and took the early lead, followed by Yamaha-mounted Jack Elliot and Cameron. The top three remained the same to the finish. with Triest posting another win. Moto two had the same results, but Cameron had to work for it this time. Triest was out front, with Cameron in second and Elliot running third. Cameron ran into problems on lap two and fell way back. Meanwhile. Triest set the pace, Elliot was now second, and Saul Gonzalez found himself in third. On each lap, Cameron was picking off riders and slowly working his way back toward the front. By lap three, Cameron was knocking on Gonzalez's back door, looking to take over third. Gonzalez held third until the last lap, when Cameron got by the Honda rider. Triest took the win, followed by Elliot in second and Cameron in third. Triest (I-I) took the overall, Elliot (2-2) was second, and Cameron (3-3) placed third. Melissa Arva put in impressive rides in the Pee Wee Shaft class, taking the overall win over Jonah Locks and Tyler Aires. Locks led mota one from start to finish. Arva and Aires battled for runner-up honors, with Arva getting the nod. Aires finished third, while Cal Johnson crossed the checkers for fourth. Moto two was all Arva's, from the drop of the gate. She charged hard from start to finish and claimed the victory. By bettering Locks in the second moto, Arva secured the overall. Locks finished second, and Aires again fin· ished third, which is where each rider finished overall, respectively. Elric FIo ~ ~ Q. TARLTON. OR, JUNE 8 It's tough to cheer on and monitor even one racer on a motocross track, yet for Westerville, Ohio's lies family, it's triple the pressure and responsibility: They have not one or two but three siblings entered in the same class. Mr. And Mrs. lies were all smiles on this day, however, as the three lies boys - Josh, Todd and Shawn - all had great days at this long and tough circuit in Tarlton, Ohio. The lies boys did most of their damage in the 125cc B class, where Shawn motivated himself to a steady and speedy I-I score for the overall, followed by Todd with a 2-3 tally for second overall. Their brother Josh put in a 3-5 performance for fifth overall. Shawn and Todd went at it again in the 16-24 class. where Derek Sturgell tore off for the win in moto one. Shawn took first in moto two for the overall with a 1-2 tally, and Todd slipped in for second with his 3-2 postings. Sturgell went on to become the winner of the 125cc A class. Vincent "Jose" Loyola smacked the Over 40 class, screaming his Honda in first in both motos. Nobody could catch Robert Sparks on this day. He hauled the mail for wins in the Over 25 and Over 30 age divisions. The top 80cc class racer on the day had to be Allen Nutter, who tore up both the Mini Senior and BOcc Extra classes on his Yamaha, notching a four-moto sweep.
