Bruce McDougal can stili make a Penton go fast. Of course, there was plenty of racing action on the vintage bikes. Here, Mark Dyer hooks up on his super-sano Maico. ed a first- or second-place moto finish on Sunday, he'd be racing YROC in '03, or "wearing a dress." A safe bet, one would assume, as Goat was nursing a broken index finger and severe blistering described by one trackside wag as "hand-burger." Come Sunday, with Hannah's words still fresh, Breker grabbed the holeshot and never looked back. "We'll have to find Bob a seamstress," he qUipped during the post-race interview. Meanwhile, three-time 125cc champ Glover used his past mastery of the small-bore formula to stamp his authority on the event. Glover miraculously positioned his tiddler into third spot on the opening lap, hounding Holley who, for this moto, was aboard the 426F. As the lead pack exited the carousel on lap three, Holley crashed spectacularly at high speed, directly in the path of Glover. "Holley got out of shape 100 yards before he went down," Glover said. "It messed up my drive out of the turn, so I had time to react when he fell." Lechien also fell out of the overall picture after dropping his 250F and doing his best Ernesto Fonseca restart impression. Meanwhile, Jobe, also mounted aboard a 125 for moto three, was desperately trying to find a way around the Australian, Gall, a feat he eventually accomplished on the final lap. With Holley's DNF eliminating him from the overall contention, Jobe needed to better Glover by two spots in the final moto to capture the individual title. As the final moto began, it was Breker, once again, leading the field and seemingly on his way to a 1-1 on the day, with Moates holding out the ubiquitous pit board, waving on encouragement to his sub (now dressed in his own gear). Despite claiming that the 250F didn't suit his style, Glover also made a great start, and with Jobe behind him, Glover needed only to maintain station to secure the overall. Never one to back into any championship, Glover put the hammer down, reeling in and passing a fading Breker, who could no longer hang on to the powerful 426F. Meanwhile, Moates, who will doubtless claim "the Vicodin made me do it," hung out the pit board with the words "LET GOAT BYE" scrawled on it. Glover's response was to twist the throttle even further, winning by a 10-second margin. With the team competition close, eyes were drawn to the midpack battle between Holley and Gibson, on 125s, who battled with Gall (on a 250) and Vehkonen (on a 250F). Holley's day went further south as the eighth-liter machine seized solid on the last lap. Things would go from bad to worse for Jim, as he was hospitalized that evening with bruised kidneys and liver, a result of his brutal moto-three get-off. Holley's misfortune gave the world team a ray of hope in the team battle that came completely apart as Gall went down, making a meal of the fina I tabletop and leaving a veritable yard sale of gear and bodywork for the track crew to clean up. When the dust settled, and the scores were totaled, the U.S. "boys" had won the team prize. Glover had the individual crown, but it was Breker and the "samurai" Suzuki that won the hearts of the crowd. In the words of the event's creator, Vintage Iron's Rick Doughty: "It may be a Kawasaki slogan, but with an event that puts a Suzuki [Hideaki Suzuki] on a Yamaha, it's only fitting that 'Let the good times roll' best describes the spirit of what YROC is really all about". eN 61en Helen Raceway San Bernardino, California YROC Results: June 20-22, 2002 MOTO 1: 1.
