AMAIChevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship Round 1 1 : Brainerd International Raceway "I just was not comfortable hanging it out with those guys," he said. "That pace was about as quick as I wanted to go, and when Eric took the lead, he took it up a notch and that's when they split from me. Then, after that, I was just really trying to keep those guys behind me - Kurtis and Doug. Like I said, with the setup change I just couldn't get my lines. And here, if you're a little bit off line, you're on the tar patches. I'm pretty happy I didn't put it on the ground. I had a couple of big moments here and there." Roberts let DuHamel past on the final lap. "I knew he was tired. You could tell that he put everything in and he put in a good race," DuHamel said. By then, Roberts was simply worn out. He'd led the race, which didn't surprise him. "( know I can do it, but doing it for 21 laps is the question," he said. "Going in, the heat, the humidity, and not being on a bike for three months, I was a little skeptical of the physical aspect of it," Roberts said, but he found that "mentally, it was tough. Right after Eric got around me, I started missing some shifts and backshifts and it started playing with my head and it just slowly went downhill from there. Kind of not being around, I thought it was worse than it was." Roberts said he couldn't even drag his leg the last two laps. "Right handers, if it hit the ground the last two laps I felt it. I kept it up the last two laps and it was sore," he said. I:N Braiaenlilltllrutiaaal IlKew~ Brainerd, Minaesata Results: June 3D, 2002 SUPERBIKE QUAlIFVING: I. Eric Bostrom (1 :36.421); 2. NELSON BRAINERD, "'IN, JUNE 30 l1?here was no reason to believe U Jake Zemke would prevail. The Bruce Transportation Group Honda rider had never been on the podium of a Pro Honda Oils Supersport race, let alone won one. Yet, here he was, taking the lead from Kawasaki's Tommy Hayden on the final lap. Hayden would have none of it, of course, striking back almost immediately the lead changing hands three times before Zemke ultimately prevailed on a day of oppressive heat and humidity at Brainerd International Raceway. "I'm so happy," the 26-year-old Paso Robles resident said after beating Hayden to the line by .243 of a second. "I've never been on the 600 podium before and for the first one to be a win, I mean, that's just incredible. I'm really, really happy. I can't say too much." For Hayden, the last lap was distressingly familiar. "It's frustrating to get second," he said. "Three out of the last four races, besides the one I won, I've led with half a lap to go and didn't get the win. Seems like I'm riding pretty good and everything's going good. I've just got to put the last lap together - I could have a nice string there." Championship leader Aaron Yates said he won the battle of the Suzukis, finishing third at the head of a quartet that included Attack Suzuki's Jason Pridmore, 12 JULvl0,2002' EO Y EO I. Blimpie/Yoshimura Suzuki's Jamie Hacking, and the Yamaha of Graves Motorsports' Damon Buckmaster. Hayden took a few points away from Yates' points lead, but the latter still holds a commanding 51-point edge, 234-183, with three rounds to n e _ s go. Pridmore and Buckmaster are tied for third at 168. Zemke completed the 13-lap, 39mile race in 22 minutes, 23.111 seconds, at an average speed of 104.533 mph, well off Eric Bostrom's 2000 race record of 106.121 mph. Brutal heat and a deteriorating track surface, with a number of slick sealant patches, slowed the race down. The pace at the beginning was hot, Kawasaki's Tony Meiring bolting from his spot at the end of the front row and into the lead. His best chance to
