AMA District 14 Michigan Hare Scrambles Series Round 5: Bent Wheels Competition Club Parlin Plays CatchUp at Bent Wheels By /YIAAK SPORE ROSE CITY, MI, JUNE 9 The Bent Wheels Competition Club has hosted many AMA events throughout the years, and it has been a popular course among the riders, hosting two events each season for the AMA District 14 Hare Scrambles Series. The club, located in the small northern Michigan town of Rose City, provides competitors with the option of camping on .the grounds or the con venience a comfortable hotel with a restaurant right at the entrance of the track. As the Expert riders lined up in the front w row for the start of the afternoon program. there was one noticeable absence: Corey Par· lin, the current points leader. The flag dropped for the start of the moto. and Honda·mounted Travis Tudethout came around the first comer with the holeshot. As the rest of the Expert riders chased Tudethout around the next series of corners, they passed the pit area of Corey Parlin. who was shocked to see his fellow competitors come racing by. "I didn't hear anyone announce that they were lining up for the start, so I was still adding air to one of my tires," said Parlin. "I didn't even have ali of my gear on. I couldn't believe it when I heard their bikes fire up!" After qUickly throwing the rest of his gear on, the Lansing Cycle/Moose/Alpinestars/ Enduro Engineering-backed rider had his work cut out for him, as he had given a talented group of riders a more-than-one-minute head start. Parlin made quick work of the two classes that had started off behind the Expert class, and then he began making up lime on the leaders. Last year's series champion, Aaron Wegner, came through scoring with the lead after the first lap and steadily began distancing himself from the rest of the field. The battle for second was being hotly contested by two GNCC A-class regulars, as Team Green Kawasakis' Chris Galit and Honda-mounted Bryan Dunlap shadowed each other for the first hour. Amazingly, Parlin had caught and Bent Wheels Competition Club: Corey Parlin gave the field an unexpected advantage when he missed the start for his class. Nevertheless, Parlin put in his most Impressive performance of this season's Michigan Hare Scrambles Series, earning the overall win at round five in Rose City. passed Dunlap at the hour·and·a-half mark, and now he was pressuring Gallt. After a 40-minute battle with Galit, Parlin made the pass for second with two laps to go, but it appeared that Wegner was too far out front to be ca ught. As luck would have it - good luck for Parlin, bad luck for Wegner - the coolant had leaked out of Wegners' YZ125, handing Parlin the win. Gallt followed in second, with IMS/O'Neai-backed Wegner limping his Yamaha through scoring for third. Dunlap rode his Groves-supported Honda through scoring in fourth, foliowed by Coliege Bike/Troy Lee Designs-backed Scott Barclay in fifth. Steve Willey and Robbie Cribbs rode through scoring next, with the two Expert riders earning sixth and seventh overall, respectively. The top non-Expert rider came out of the Over 30 class, as Shawmut Hills-sponsored Mark Spore made a pass for the lead just prior to the last lap, claiming the class victory and eighth overall. The 250cc ciass featured a tight battle for the second week in a row, as Matt Harris rode his Honda through scoring for the win just 18 seconds ahead of the class points leader, Noah Sears, who also competes on a Honda. David Allen Racing's Ken Johnson was a minute back, earning the Honda rider a third-place finish in the class. The race for first in the Heavy Team class went to the team of Blair Bersano and Mike Stapula, as the two Suzuki pilots pulied away from the field for an impressive win. The battle for second place was a tight one, as the Kawasaki-mounted team of Gerrit Poweli and Tim Beougher squeaked through scoring just 24 seconds ahead of last year's Heavy Team champions, Honda-mounted Eddie Keen and Ron Balzer. day. Leisure Time will resume racing on August 25th. There are several more changes to be made, and most of the riders are looking forward to a constantly improving track. In several classes, riders recorded their first victory in the fiverace series. Coming off a second-overall finish at the last race, Aaron White, twisted the throttle on his new KTM to record back-toback wins in the 125cc B class. Clint lIer. finally healthy, recorded his first overall victory in the Heavyweight B class. With another great turnout of riders and spectators, Leisure Time put on a good day of racing, and finally opened the new section that included their first double, which was wellreceived by all the riders. Additionally, Leisure Time spent most of the night watering the sandy track. The riders were surprised that there was very little dust, even with the high temperatures and bright sun. The Auto Three class got the racing under way, with Steven Penn making his second visit this year payoff with back-to-back wins aboard his Yamaha YZinger. The father-and-son duo of Rick and Matt Walsworth also showed up to do battle. Rick, the manager of Michigan City Honda, record~ ed another perfect day in the Over 30 A and Over 40 classes aboard his Honda thumper. His son Matt also recorded a win, in the 12- 15 age class, but he had to play second fiddle to White in the 125cc B class. In the first mota of the 125cc B class, White piloted his KTM into the lead and held off Walsworth's Honda for the win. "The power on the KTM is unreal: White enthused. "I lost the end cap to the exhaust in the first mota, but I am really pumped with the KTM." In the second moto, White again pulled the holeshot, but Walsworth passed the KTM rider in the back section and led for two laps before being repassed in the dreaded whoop section. White regained the lead and rode flawlessly to record his first-ever back-to-back moto wins. "I didn't think I would be able to get around (Kaw). 85 JR: I. Robert WisniewsIU (Hon): 2.
