At the start of lap nine, Arndt got into turn one too hot and collected Springsteen in what looked like a big pile-up. Springsteen was able to hold on and kept third, but Arndt spun down. Springsteen then held off Canadian Doug Lawrence for the last podium position. Arndt also continued on, but in ninth position. The 505cc Experts were up next, and Raun Wood got the holeshot on his Scott Powers ports/Greenland Masonry-sponsored Rotax. Wood was under heavy pressure from Bartels' Harley-Davidson's Shaun Russell. As the third lap started, Russell coasted to the top off turn two, done for the night. Wood had little time to rest, as his Pennsylvania neighbor, Kevin Varnes, was all over him. Varnes shot by on lap eight of the 12-lap race. Varnes was able to gain a comfortable margin over Woods on the last three laps. Gutteridge Harley-Davidson/DPC Racing's Josh Toungett took third on his Rotax. Earlier in the night, young Toungett had posted the first Expert heat-race win of his young career. Timmy Mitchell (backed by Mark IV Suzuki and Tilley HarleyDavidson) and Scott Deubler (backed by Kyle's Racing and Hard Head Graphics) rounded out the top five. The Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance main was round five of the I)-race National series and brought out a solid field of riders who are campaigning for the series title. Heat wins went to Mees and Marioneaux-Nallin Racing/A&A's Scott Scherb. Doc's Harley-Davidson/Jim Wagner-sponsored Brian Thomas led the 17 -rider field for the first two laps, with Scherb and Coziahr HarleyDavidson/Kiesow Racing's James Hart right on his heels. Scherb took over on lap three, with Mees follOWing into second. The race was redflagged on lap five when Jeff Hiers fell in turn four. Hiers was not injured, but he could not make the restart. Scherb picked up where he left off, but Mees finally worked his way by at the halfway mark of the I2-lap race. Mees then pulled away as Scherb appeared to slow. The races finished with Hart closing on Scherb. Japan's Yuhiko Hirao finished a solid fourth on his F&S Suzuki/Harley-Davidson/Daytona backed Sportster. Frieze's Harley-Davidson/Doug Jones' John Faulkner m rounded out the top five. Mees took over the points lead from Rusty Rogers, who broke his R&D Machine/Carl Patrick Racingbacked Sportster in practice and was forced to sit out the night. The rolling-thunder 750/1 OOOcc Expert main rolled to the line as the last race of the night, and it didn't disappoint. The Bartels' HarleyDavidson team of Jay Springsteen and Shaun Russell led the Expert 750/1 OOOcc main until Varnes wedged his Memphis Shades Harley between them on lap four. In their heat race, Russell and Varnes had battled their way to the fast time after Springsteen had won the first heat. Varnes was not content in second and charged after Springsteen. As the two battled back and forth, they got into lapped traffic. Varnes took the Grant: 14. Sh8ne Fox; 15. Scott Deubler; 16. Mike Meyer, 17. Jeff Hiers. Time: No Time due to red flag.
