matiuk in three and Perkins in four. McConnell got a great gate, got out on top and stayed there. DiFrancesco tried everything to find a way around, but when McConnell's on the pole, there's no stopping him. On back it was Harmatiuk and Perkins. In the richest race of the night, the Scratch main, the pole went to Brant, with Manchester in two and Castro and Janniro in three and four. This was going to be a war. Both Brant and Janniro exploded off the line. Brant made the comer first, but Janniro wasn't giving up and he kept the pressure on Brant all the way, hoping for a mistake that never came. He would have to settle for second. Manchester and Castro used the high line; Manchester, still nursing injuries, claimed third. The Handicap main had all the big guns. On the 20 it was John DeFries all by himself. DiFrancesco was alone on the 30. Castro and McConnell gardened on the 50, and Brant and Janniro were on the 60. DeFries got off strong and held on for two laps before Castro, on the outside, ran him down, as only Castro can. Brant was right behind him, and they diced for four more laps; everyone was on their feet, thinking they might see a double win. Castro was the spoiler, as he held off Brant to take home the gold on the Handicap side. Steve Murray, who came out of retirement this year, put in a great ride as he won the Support main, over Chad Newlee and Scott Tidwell. Support B honors went to the young man from Japan. Hideaki Ota. Steve Nelson and Mike Hemandez were second and third. R.sulb SCR: I. Scott Brant (GM); 2. Billy JM1fliro (Jaw); 3. Chris Man_'"IGfoI): 4. Ed C.... (GfoI). SCR CONSl: 1 Shewn McConnell (Jaw); 2. The ongoing Pee Wee battle continued between Michael Martin and Brandon Bemardeau in the 50cc Stock A, 50cc Senior and 60cc B classes. He rode his 250cc Bultaco in the Vet A class, where he is seventh in the points, behind six Rotax riders. Chris Borjas and Michael Day finished the 250cc C race in that order, and they are one and two in the series points chase, as well. The XR 100 Modified and Stock classes finished with Mike Snedden and Mike Bessemer placing first in the A and B classes, respectively, while C.D. Howell was the first Modified 100 C·c1ass rider across the line. These riders are all points leaders in their respective classes. Snedden took another victory in the XR100 Sportsman A class. The XR100 Modified C class saw Jake Scallan finish first; Scallan is a motocross rider who is riding flat track while he heals from a leg injury. Stephen Sikorski was the first Stock B rider to the checkers, and Adam Poffenbarger finished with the tall trophy in the C class. Robert McDonnell easily scored the victory in the Over 40 class, but the excitement in this race was provided by Michael Crump. a C· class rider who finished second, in front of two A riders and a B rider! Crump rode a great race, holdjng his line tight going into the first turn behind McDonnell and never losing that position. Crump holds the series points lead in the C class. drum and, as a centerpiece, an automobile. Throughout the day, the riders negotiated these obstacles while they interacted with crowd. There was a tremendous amount of interest in these bikes and the sport with which they were associated. Many of the people present had a passing familiarity with the machines and appreciated the opportunity to get an up-close look at the machines and have their questions answered. Trials movies played on a TV, and brochures explaining the sport were available, with points of contact for more information. There was always a person available to answer questions and explajn the sport for the onlookers. The success of the show was described by Jason Trimarchi, owner of Discount Powersports, a week after the event: "People are still talking about those crazy guys on those funny-looking trials bikes riding over the car. Overall, they were very impressed, and it cre~ ated a lot of interest in the sport of trials, that's for sure. We never expected as large of a crowd as we had. Without a doubt, the trials demo was a huge part of making our grand opening a huge success." The riders presented a range of abilities to the spectators, showing that riders of all levels and abilities could enjoy the sport. The riders were 6'year-old Youth rider Dean Bechard, 9-year-old Youth rider Wesley O'Dell, Sportsman rider Jimmie O'Dell, and Advanced rider Alan Bechard; all were on Betas. Club Moto: In Livermore, California, C rider Michael Crump (4) follows Robert McDonnell (51) to the first corner in the Over 40 race, eventually finishing second in front of two A riders and a B rider. The eight· rider Vet A race started with Robert Bacosa ieading Mark Biscardi and Eric Turner to the first comer. Johnny Larson got under Tumer on the second lap, and they finished in that order. After this race, McDonnell, Biscardi and Bacosa are all within seven points of one another and in contention for the lead in this series. Open B series points leader Mike Besemer was victorious again, while a newcomer to f1at·track racing, Toby Trana, won the C class. In the Open A contest. Mark Corsetti got the holeshot, with Matt Proto and Kenny Carlotta in hot pursuit throughout the race. Corsetti gained ground with each lap, and the race finished in that order. Results P/W STK A: I. Salmon Valley Speedway Shefts Sizzles at Salmon Valley By BAMBI McAFEE Discount Powersports SALMON, ID, MAY 25 Great weather welcomed fans and riders at the second Salmon Valley Speedway race of the season. With the new track surface getting better each week, fans enjoyed another great night of racing. The first ISRA Speedway heat of the night had Montana's Todd Hunter on the pole, Bren· dan Fennessey in gate two, Mark Van Zuyen in three and Marty Shefts in four. Fennessey got the holeshot and raced to the first-heat win on his bikeboneyard.com·backed Jawa. Shefts took second on his Weslake, Hunter was third and Van Zuyen was fourth. In heat two, local Salmon rider Shane McAfee went wire to wire for the win, over Tyler Hansen and Carson Shefts. In heat three. Fennessey won for the sec~ ond time that evening, despite being bumped by "Madman" Marty Shefts; Shefts went down and McAfee took evasive action. Tyler Hansen then slipped in for second, Shefts remounted for third, and McAfee did not finish. Coming into his own, Carson Shefts won heat four, with Hunter second and "Flyin'" Van Zuyen in third. The seven·rider lineup for the main saw McAfee on the pole. Fennessey in two, Marty Shefts in three, Hansen in four, Hunter in five, STRA Trials Riders Promote the Sport By AlAN BECHARD MARYVILLE, TN, JUNE 1 STRA MotoTrials riders participated in the grand·operung celebration for Discount Pow· ersports in Maryville, Tennessee, on the first of June. The activities were many and varied, catering to a wide range of motorsports enthu· siasts. There was a Dyno, a Burnout contest, and door prizes, but one of the highlights of the day were the MotoTrials demonstrations. The demonstrations were the brainchild of Mr. Jimmie O'Dell, and were conceived as a way to promote interest in the sport. He felt that by exposing MotoTrials to people who were already avid motorcyclists, possibly some new riders would enter the sport. All initial indications are that this was a success. The demonstration area consisted of a fenced plot adjacent to the shop, and it contained several obstacles for the riders. Some large rocks were brought in, along with several railroad ties and lumber pieces. a 55-gallon r-------------------=---------------------.,::l w o b w ,. ~ =; i:i ~ Discount Powersports: The author demonstrates a new way to negotiate rush-hour traffic at the MotoTrials demonstration at the grand opening of Discount Powersports In Maryville, Tennessee.
