Fast Fridays Speedway Janniro Returns to Win 25-Lapper Bv M. SOBER AUBURN, CA, MAY 31 British League sophomore speedway rider Billy "Rio de" Janniro made his first return of the year to the States from overseas one to remember, as he swept the Fast Friday Scratch main event as well as the annual 25-lap Ironman Handicap main. The weather was perfect and the attendance fairly good, despite the scheduling conflict with the nationally televised NBA playoffs. The Scratch main, which is normally the closing race of the night, gave away its final-race slot to the exhausting 25-lap Handicap main. In the Scratch main, Janniro drew starting slot two, just inches to the right of pole sitter Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden, and left of Bart "Simpson" Bast and Chad Felicio, who was stationed nearest the crash fence. "I'd really rather race here than anywhere else in the world," said Janniro as champagne dripped off his nose during his victory celebration after the race. "When I drew lane two, I was pretty happy. I knew I had a good shot from there." Janniro was the first off the line, on his Seco/Arai/Keymore Imaging/Amay Goggles Jawa, and despite inside and outside efforts by Bast and Hedden, the former Junior Speedway wild man had the front all to himself as he cruised to the checkered flag. Bast stayed with Janniro and claimed second, a few bikelengths ahead of Felicio, who took over third when Hedden slid out while trying to go around Bast on lap two. In the 25-Lap main, all handicap margins are doubled. Normally 50-yard starters, Bast, Hedden and Janniro started in the middle of the back straightaway, well behind 60-yard men Tommy Hedden, Bryan Yarrow and Felicia. Rich Marcucci sat alone behind the 40-yard line, and zero-line competitors Ivan Sevart, J.J. Martynse and Robert Mellor completed the field. Sevart took the point at the start of the marathon and led the first 10 laps. Martynse followed Sevart until lap seven, when Felicio bumped him from the brides- maid's position. Felicia took the lead from Sevart on lap 11. only to see Janniro move to the front by the end of lap 12. Felicio valiantly attempted to stay with Janniro as the grueling laps ticked away, maintaining second place until lap 22, when former 25-Lap Champion Bobby Hedden took away the runner-up spot. Felicio, who is also a former 25-Lap Champi· on, barely managed to hold on to the bike and third place, finishing the race just a few feet ahead of Bast; who was the last man still on the lead lap. Earlier in the evening, Paul Johnson won his initial Youth Division main event, ahead of Mark Carrillo, in a crash~shortened finale. Jay Rickets smoked through the Youth Division Two field, while Hunter Morris stocked, shot and mounted the Division Three main-event trophy. Richard Mellor, who also made a run at the 25-Lap final, won the Division Two main, ahead of local Aubum favorite Rachelle Kerr, Koppellah Speedway: District 16's Kyle Meiers won two out of three classes in St. Croix Falls. Koppellah Speedway Morris. Meiers Master Koppellah ST By TIM McBRIOE ST. CROIX FALLS, WI, JUNE 1 District 23's Mini hotshoe Jory Morris and District 16's Kyle Meiers each scored two out of a possible three victories during a unique double-district dirt track race held at Koppel· lah Speedway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. Burr Racing Promotions played host to 164 entrants from Minnesota's District 23 and Wisconsin's District 16, where championship points were awarded to riders from each division. Silver Lake, Minnesota's Morris got off to a slow start by finishing second to District 23's Jeremy Anderson in the 85cc Mini main w a: 8 'z" w <:> > '" ~ . event. After chasing Morris for three laps, Anderson lined up the race leader in turn one and made an inside pass to take the lead and score the win. District 23's Jonathan Zeismer came home third, ahead of a close race for fourth place between two District 23 racers, Chris Lauberscheimer and Eddy Hampe. The 65cc Mini class saw Morris net his first win of the night over a hotly contested battle for second between District 23's Conner Anderson and District 16's Megan Routheaux. District 16's Jordan Schoen and Lauberscheimer rounded out the top five in the 12-rider field. Morris then notched his second win of the night by narrowly defeating fellow District 23 80cc Open contenders Anderson, Zeismer, Hampe, Lauberscheimer and Natasha Waschek, as well as the rest of that 12-rider field. Meiers was the class of the field in two out of possible three divisions as well. And, like Morris, Meiers got off to a slow start, as he finished second to District 23's Shawn Burr in the 250cc A class. Upcoming District 23 contender Josh Koch raced his Honda CR250 to a solid third-place finish. District 23's Troy Solnitsky tumed in a good performance also, finishing fourth, ahead of District 16's Brock Schwarzenbacher (who won the 125cc A class). Meiers picked up his first win of the night when he came out on top in the Open A final, just ahead of Koch and Burr. District 23 multirace winner Richard Waschek (who easily won the Over 30 and Over 40 classes) finished fourth, ahead of District 23's Jacob Mataya. Meiers' second win of the night came in the 505cc Amateur class, where he piloted his DTXed 450cc Honda to a commanding victory over Burr, who bettered his heat-race performance by passing District 16's Jacob Knetter. In the first 250cc Pro moto, Jeff Eide put his Mid Cities Honda into the point position at the drop of the gate. Young dogged Eide for about half a lap before taking over the top spot. Young ended up putting a second per lap on Eide en route to the win. Billy Lavorci finished third after battling with Luke Orr early in the race and then doing the same with Kevin McGovern on the final lap. Lavorci put the lone Kawasaki out front for about half a lap in moto two before Young took charge after his fourth-place start. You·ng duplicated his first-moto performance by slowly distancing himself from the field to sweep the class. Eide easily made his way up into another runner-up finish. Lavorci and McGovern tangled and went down on the last lap while arguing over third place, handing the position to Nick Mairose. Lavorci was up the quickest to finish fourth, behind Mairose, to eam the third-place payback. Young returned to turn a couple of holeshots into runaway victories in the 125cc Pro class. Raymond Smith worked his way around George laMonte midway through the second moto to go 2-2 on the night. Chris Norr and his Honda of Houston/ Nationwide Cycle/Troy Lee/FMF -backed CR 125 were untouchable in the opening J 25cc Intermediate moto. Adam Gragg, Josh Bagge and Garrett Eberle were all over each other for second place, with Gragg prevailing by a couple offeet over Bagge at the checkers. Norr got the start he needed in round two, but Bagge was on a tear and by lap two he was running out front. Norr gave it his best shot, but he couldn't find a way around his fellow Honda rider and he had to settle for a second-place finish, which still gave him the overall. Gragg finished third in the moto and third overall, topping the 4-4 score of Eberle and the 5-5 finishes of Ricky Parks. Results PIW VAM BEG: J. Jonathan Soliz (Yam); 2.
