North Carolina Hare Scrambles Association Championship Series Round 4: Devil's Ridge Earl Hot as the Devil By JOHN JORDAN fourth in the Pro class while fighting off severe SANFORD, NC, JUNE 2 Round four of the North Carolina Hare Scrambles Series took place at Devils Ridge in Sanford, North Carolina. Alco Yamaha/Moose consistent laps and posting his fastest lap time Racing-sponsored Pro-class rider Vance Earl won the overall, taking his second win in a row. Summer was in full swing by the start of tlJe A race, with temperatures reaching the mid-90s. Earl got a great start, leading the class through the first tum and into the woods. The start would prove to be especially important for Earl, due to dusty conditions and mechanical problems later in the race. Earl charged to a 15-second advantage on lap one, with Dale Brown keeping him in sight. Brown, hungry for his first overall win, stayed aggressive and allowed Earl to gain only 30 seconds dehydration. AA-c1ass rider Ricky Loflin raced to his first class win of the season and fourth place overall. Loflin showed impressive form, riding more than 90 minutes into the race. Curtis Kesler pushed Loflin hard, just five seconds behind, through the first three laps, but on lap four the heat would win the battle. Kessler was forced to pull off the track to cool down, allowing Matthew Pressley to charge to second piace. Pressley got faster each lap but would also fall victim to fatigue and dehydration by lap eight. Pressley needed only one lap to regain his energy, but that gave Andy Williams the opportunity to move into second, with Pressley finishing third. Willie Bradshaw posted his best finish of the year in fourth place in the AA class, and posure and by lap seven was matching his Lee Thornburg rounded out the top five. Thornburg has been neariy unbeatable in this class so far, but the extreme temperatures affected him as well. Vet A-class winner Dan Short rode hard, claiming eighth place overall - his best finish in 2002. The 200cc A-class winner, Jeff Silvers, also had his best overall placement, earlier lap times. Brown would have to settle coming in ninth. over the next two laps. Struggling on lap four, Brown got his chance on lap five. Earl suffered a flat rear tire, falling nearly 45 seconds off the pace. Brown stayed consistent, posting faster laps each time through, but Earl regained his com- for second overall, just under two minutes behind by the end of the race. Pro rider Jeff Vealey stayed close but couldn't quite match the pace of the two front- runners, finishing a strong third. First-round winner Patrick Hayes found the early·summer heat too much but stayed strong enough for Track owners Ken and Judy Cameron hosted one of the best races to date, with more than three miles of new trail on the nearly 6-mile course. This location has been a valuable part of the NCHSA since the early 1990s. Ken and Judy's dedication to the sport is appreciated.
