AMA National Hare & Hound Series Round S: -..Jackpot 100 ryv'd Rockies/USA Promotions) leading coming into the pits, but the tire change cost him over a minute and, by the time he got back oncourse, Davis was again in front and David Pearson was not far behind. Now, with just over 30 miles to the finish, Brown pulled out all the stops. "I just rode as hard as I could after that [pit stop 1 to catch up to Ty," Brown said. Using all the power that he could wring out of his 500, he closed the gap on Davis on the long, steep road sections that took them up and over the last range before the finish at Jackpot. "Brian passed me after the start, I passed him back and we started going down this road and he just outpowered me," Davis said. Davis added that he was having problems with his tank pressurizing and loading up the carburetor and couldn't hold him off. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DOUG KARCHER JACKPOT, NV, JUNE 15 ~ fter exchanging the lead several J.r!J.. times with current series points leader Ty Davis, Team Green's Brian Brown delivered Kawasaki's first overall win since round two in Idaho. He overcame a flat tire and a closed gate on the course to get the big green bike to the checkers first. Davis, riding the Montclair Yamaha YZ426F, finished second (first Vet Expert), followed by David Pearson on another Kawasaki KX500. YZmounted Russ Pearson was the first 250 in fourth overall, and Andy Grider, riding the factory-backed XR650R, rounded out the top five. Taber Murphy extended his Four-Stroke points lead with another class win and eighth overall. Joey Lanza, 15th overall, was the first eighth-liter bike to cross the line. The point-to-point race started on a mile of flat sagebrush-covered ground alongside highway 93, north of Wells, Nevada. Riders were allowed to walk, but not ride, the start run before the race. When the banner dropped at 10: 10 a.m., Wes McMillan, on a privateer Kawasaki KX500, led the field up the middle of the "bomb" run, but Nick Pearson, who had spent a lot of time walking the start, had a line on the far left that eventually turned out to be a little faster for his Yamaha YZ426F, barely edging out McMillan as they rounded the power pole that marked the turn onto the course. Nick's lead was short-lived, though, as he endoed 42 JULv3, 2002' cue' • while crossing a pair of washes less than a quarter-mile into the course. He scrambled to get off the line and watched helplessly as the rest of the A riders went past. He wasn't hurt, and as soon as it was clear, he picked up his bike and rejoined the race. The virgin course in the opening sections was, by many accounts, sparingly marked and difficult to follow, leaving the leader at a disadvantage. Davis said, "They ran you up through some virgin stuff. It was just n _ VII' S really hard. It was like they just walked through and tied ribbons. There was no trail." Brown soon took the lead from Davis and was trying to put some distance between them when he encountered a closed gate. He saw it in time to stop, but Davis caught and passed him while he was off the bike. Brown caught and passed Davis back, but he picked up a flat rear tire. Brown rode the next 40 miles on the flat before getting a fresh tire at the pits. He was When Brown's dust trail came into view as he approached the finish line, he was the only bike in sight. Davis, though, wasn't too far behind to take second, while David Pearson came home in third. I:N Jackpot 100 Jackpot, Nevada Resuhs:June l5,ZOOZ O/A: 1. Britln Brown (K~w); 2. Ty Devis (Y8m); 3.
