Riverside MX: The 85cc Beginner class awaits their second-moto star! at round three of the Riders' Summer Shootout Series, in Newton, Alabama. laps on the new track. The track was loose from bad weather the previous week, but riders still rode hard in the heats. Track crews were busy smoothing and packing the track throughout the night. Juniors Chip Lengle and Mike Buman Jr. had impressive showings, making the future of speedway look very good. Lengle took first place in the main event. In the Support B contest, Marc Gauthier came up through the middle off the handicap start to take the lead out of the first corner. Keith Hawkins gave it all he had to catch him, but Gauthier was too fast. In Support A racing, Jay "The Stingray" Stalma took the holeshot, sticking to the bottom of the track. Joel "The Bull" Parsons got on the inside of Stalma going into the second comer, pushing the sidewinder to the outside. Joel took the checkers. Josh Larsen of Califomia took the holeshot in the main, but Tom Sephton got too side· ways in the first comer and fell. This caused a restart. Once again, Larsen took the holeshot. Sephton, Michel Lemay and Jeremy Parsons were banging handlebars in a battle for second. Parsons broke a chain coming out of the comer, allowing Sephton to take second, but no one could catch Larsen and he took first place. Bonsignore and crew will have the track running better every week until it is perfected. Overall, it was a good night of racing. The second outing saw Dennis lead the Adamses and Crumb. Devilbiss came on strong and moved to second. Dennis built a lead but couldn't shake Devilbiss, who passed for first in the back section. Josh Adams pres· sured Dennis but couldn't muster the speed for a pass. By the finish, Dennis had repassed Devilbiss for the win. Josh Adams was third. Lone 250cc B rider Chase Uvingston competed in the 250cc C class. He led the first moto, followed by Mike Hare and Dothan, Alabama's Paul Powell. With liVingston long gone, Hare came under fire from Eric Reese and Cole Reese. He held on for second, and Powel caught both Reeses for third. Uvingston was a DNS for race two. Hare put his Kawasaki out front early, but Cole Reese reeled him in for the win. Powell nabbed Eric Reese in a photo-finish for third. Results P/W 50: 1. Mason Brown (Yam): 2. Hayd~n Olive (Yam); 3. By CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN OKEECHOBEE, FL, MAY 25 Jon Cone arrived at round five of the Thunder Cross Saturday Night Series ready to do battle. Cone had a tough time in moto one of the 85cc Beginner class, but he came back with a vengeance in moto two to take the win and the overall. Cone was not the only one of the family to head up a podium. Cone's father also made the competition surrender, winnjng the Over 35 class. Cone could only manage a fourthplace finish in moto one. Cone's nearest rival, Joe Parsons, won the moto. followed by Anthony Montesi. Third went to Cody Brown, and Dalton Guttridge rounded out the top five. By the second moto, Cone was ready, leading the pack and winning the moto. Guttridge decided to tag along in second, as Brown fin~ ished third again. The overall was in Parson's hands, and he could only get a fourth place, tying Cone in points. Cone had the better second-moto finish and took home the first-place trophy. Kevin Abood finished one place higher to get fifth. Liam Eller was getting ready for the next day's round of the Florida Motocross Series. Eller turned in two moto wins in the 65cc Beginner class to take the win. Kyle Hoffman followed Eller home in both motos. Kyle Combee finished third, ahead of Travis Schoo- Lengle, Buman Top Action Park Reopening JULY ley. In moto two, Schooley tumed the tables to get the third place. Travis Sanders finished fifth in the first moto, and Josh Windland finished fIfth the second time out. Another rider getting in some lap times for Sunday's race was Peter Lurtz. Joe Baker used the extra laps to take double moto wins in the 125cc C class. Billy Brighton kept Baker honest, finishing second in each moto. Mike Holt came in third, and Shane Earhart was a close fourth. Earhart turned the tables in moto two to get third, over Joe Brewster. Holt dropped back to barely finish in the top five. PELLETT LOGAN, OH, MAY 26 When the bucks are on the line and your sponsor is forking over the dough, it's time to step up to the plate. That's exactly what Waynesville's Steve Jones did in Logan. With Dayton's powerhouse Suzuki dealership, F&S, putting contingency money on the plate, Suzuki riders from near and far converged on this rolling monster of a motocross track for the Memorial Day weekend. with more than 300 racers ready to compete. Jones, a hearty Intermediate-class racer riding for F&S, slipped his Suzuki RM250 into two quick moto wins to snare the 250cc B-c1ass overall. The 125cc B class would provide no fun for Jones, however: Bad luck would see him tally 7-DNF results that slightly marred his wonderful day in the sun. Local KTM pilot Jeff Eggleston snared the 125cc B-c1ass win with a 2-1 tally, besting Treavis Poynter's erratic 1-4 finishes. The money classes would have been all Brad Strunk had not David Herb showed up. Herb rides ridiculously fast at this track, and the talented youngster rode to 2- 1 finishes for the overall in the 250cc A class, while Strunk plugged away with a 1-2 tally for second overall. Don't feel bad for Strunk, though: He snatched 1- I finishes in both the 125cc A and Over 25 A divisions, taking home some F&S Suzuki money from his sponsor and the lion's share of promoter Tony Kilbarger's generous purse. James Burton put his pastoral duties aside for the moment and went off on the Over 40 class. using brilliant rides and a 2-1 performance to gain the overall.
