North Texas Night Series Round 3: Badlands MX Park Mosler Valley USA: Jonathan Kerr (in the lead) won the 125cc Intermediate class, but not without serious challenges from both Bradley Mikolas (195) and Riley Kurosky (51). The three raced wheel to wheel all day at the third round of the Texas Series in Euless. By DANIEl.LE CAREY Texas Series Ro nd 3: Mosier Valley USA Kerr, King of Mosier By BRIAN COMEAU EULESS, TX, MAY 19 The third round of the 30th annual GNC Texas Series made its first of two stops at Mosier Valley USA. Some 273 entrants filled the park to race in the Texas summer heat. Jonathan Kerr took a strong victory in 125cc Intermedi- ate class to gain an early lead in the points standings. Kerr also piloted his Kawasaki to wins in the I 25cc Open and 250cc Intermediate class with 1~3 and 1 ~ 1 scores, respectively. Kerr came away with the holeshot in the first moto of the 125cc Intermediate class, ahead of Bradley Mikolas and Riley Kurosky. Lance Hollister held down the fourth spot briefiy before a fall sent him back to sixth. This bumped David Keisey into fourth, ahead of Greg Chapman. The lead pack actually seemed to get tighter, with Kurosky and Mikolas challenging Kerr while Kelsey dogged them in fourth. The four-rider pack was close enough to throw a blanket over, but there was no change in positions through six laps. When the checkers came out, the order was the same as on the first lap, with Kerr taking the win ahead of Mikolas and Kurosky. Kelsey came out swinging in the second moto, picking up the holeshot and never looking back. Kerr had his hands full with Hollister, who was a much bigger factor in the second moto. Hollister held down second early before Kerr made his move on the first iap. Hollister quickly tried to take the position back from Kerr but was unsuccessful. Behind the three, Mikolas and Kurosky were left to watch in fourth and fifth, respectively. Kelsey went unchallenged through seven laps, picking the moto win and second overall, behind Kerr. With a 2-4 finish, Mikoias snagged third overall. A.J. Swanson jumped out to the early lead in the first Minibike Beginner moto, ahead of Correy Timmons and Amanda King. The top five remained unchanged through the first two laps, with Robert Westerberry and Mickey Cantu in fourth and fifth, respectively. That all changed on the third lap when King made a mistake and dropped back to sixth, behind Paul Miller. King had to contend with Dillon Tynes as the white flag came out. Swanson picked up the first-moto win, ahead of Timmons, Westerberry and Cantu. Miller rounded out the top five, while Tynes sneaked into sixth, ahead of King. In the second moto, Swanson picked up where he ended the first, taking the lead early, Wennerstrom, Sturdivan Awesome ahead of Timmons. Tynes got the start he needed but had Westerberry pressuring him early for third. Westerberry did not spend too much time behind the Suzuki-mounted Tynes, taking third on the second lap and setting out after the ieaders. The leaders held their positions throughout the remaining two laps, with Swanson taking the win for the moto sweep, ahead of Timmons and Westerberry. Tynes took fourth overall with a 6-4 score to edge out the 5-5 finishes of Miller. Corey Self had little trouble running away with both motos of the Mini Mini (9- II) class. Self jumped out front in the first moto while Tye Jackson and Dillon Van Way battled for second place. Jackson found himself deep in the pack after a mistake as Van Way, Gage Martin and Caleb Reid made up the new top four. The lead pack rode out the moto and finished in that order, with Self taking the win. Self was right there on the start again in moto two, picking up the lead early and checking out. Jackson got another good start and found himself in second, ahead of Van Way. The KTM-mounted Van Way took over the position on the second lap and Martin fol· lowed, sending Jackson back to fourth. Jack· son had Tommy Miller behind him in fifth, but there was never a race between the two throughout the remaining three laps. Self swept both motos in convincing fashion, ahead of Van Way and Martin. while Jackson took sixth overall with a 7·4 score, behind Miller and Reid. Mark Rakestraw was perfect in his attack of the Over 40 class, taking the overall with a 1-1 score. Joey Hardin's 3-2 tally took second overall, ahead of Marshall Turman, whose 4-3 finishes bested Randy Skinner for third overall. Steve McCombs piloted his Kawasaki to fifth overail. CELESTE, TX, MAY 18 Round three of the North Texas Night Series rolled into Badlands MX Park after Mother Nature dumped more than two inches of rain on the facility the day before the race. The weather cooperated after the storm subsided and provided a beautiful night, and the staff worked overtime to provide an awesome track for the 368 entered riders on hand. Steilar performances by Scotty Wennerstrom and Justin Sturdivan struck awe into many of the more than 1200 spectators who attended. Wennerstrom dominated his hometown track, stealing the show in the 85cc (14-15), 85cc Open and Schoolboy classes. Sturdivan had a great night on his 125, finishing at the top in both the 125cc Open and 125cc Intermediate classes. Sturdivan also took home a second-place trophy in the 250cc Open class. A 20-rider gate for the 65cc Open class provided quite a show as they kicked off the first race of the night. KTM rider Sean Miller grabbed the holeshot, in front of Tye Jackson and Preston Primm, and led the entire moto. Jackson went on to finish second, but Primm finished 10th after getting tangled up on the second lap. Primm redeemed himself in the second moto by jumping out to an early lead and maintaining it, ahead of Miller and Jackson, to win the second moto. Primm took fifth place overall for his efforts. Miiler claimed the class win with a 1-2 finish, followed by Jackson, who was second overall. it was a great night of racing, and the staff at Badlands was grateful to Weatherford MX Park promoter and North Texas Night Series coordinator Lee Hawkins and Village Creek MX promoter Terry Cordray for the opportunity to host such a great event. "We are looking forward to working with these guys again in the 2002 Full Moon Series," said Badlands promoter Russ Carey. Brown (Yam). 85 OPEN I B/W: I. Scotty Wennerstrom Jr. (Sul): 2..
