DAV 1 It's usually possible to get a good idea of a competition's complexion in the first few sections, but all the top riders made some mistakes in the initial wooded zones in Andorra, making things relatively unclear. Lampkin and Cabestany led early on. In the rolling stones of section seven, no one got better than a three (most had fives), but things got a bit easier in eight through 14. The final, indoorstyle section, however, was daunting. At half-competition, Lampkin led with 18 points, with Fujinami and Cabestany tied at 21. As usual, the second loop was run very fast, though not quickly enough for anyone to avoid time penalties. Cabestany was impressive, notching the lowest score and picking up just one late point, while Lampkin got a 21 good enough for a win, had he finished on time, but he got six late points. Fujinami was on 25, with two late points good enough for the podium. There was too much pressure on Cabestany, who started the competition by fiving section one. Then he recovered, being the only rider to clean section two, but - no doubt feeling the responsibility to cut a fine figure in front of his fans dabbed badly in section five. Lampkin, on the contrary, scored threes in sections two and four, but then recovered and showed his signature confidence. Fujinami also had a bad start, but then recovered well. Following Freixa's accident in the final section, the other riders were understandably more cautious. With the day half-over, the leader was Lampkin, whose score of 12 was far better than the 18 of Freixa and Fujinami (the former of whom had to abandon the contest). Cabestany was only sixth. Lampkin replicated his stellar performance in the second loop, scoring 11 and topping the podium for the eighth time this year (out of 10). There was a great fight for second place, with four riders separated by just one point. The best of them was Raga, just ahead of Fujiami (who filed a protest that was overturned).
