By lap 17, he and his shadow Yuzy were among them. Stoner won it, claiming his second sixth place of the year, though he admitted that, while his wrist injury gave him few problems, sheer exhaustion was a problem. He headed Matsudo, Yuzy and Alzamora over the line, with Elias dropping back eight seconds in 10th, though still safe from the next pair, Haru Aoki and David Checa. Nieto retained the points lead, with Melandri closing, 101 to 95. Rolfo has 80, then de Puniet 66, Battaini 60 and Alzamora 59. 125cc GRAND PRIX A fierce first lap saw three crashed out on only the third corner, but by the end of it Pedrosa was in front, pursued by Poggiali and second junior-team Telefonica rider Joan Olive, himself pursued by Youichi Ui. Poggiali led the next two laps, but then ran wide, and from then until almost half distance Pedrosa made the running, Ui and Olive in pursuit, Poggiali among them and Jenkner hanging on behind. Olive then dropped out of the group, with Jenkner also not quite able to stick to the pace. On lap II, Poggiali powered back ahead of Pedrosa, but the young Spaniard stayed glued to his back wheel, and likewise Ui, until the luckless Japanese rider was flicked over the high side on lap 14. Then there were just the two, and the crowd roared as Pedrosa - who seemed clearly faster through the twists moved around the outside to lead across the line as they started the final lap. Had he gone to soon? Poggiali powered past to lead into turn one, but Pedrosa stayed poised and passed again going into the final complex. He seemed to have it won as he ran into the last turn with a couple of lengths in-hand. Poggiali's masterstroke proved him wrong. Jenkner was a lonely third; behind, Olive also had a disappointing race after starting so well. CecchineUo had gotten away badly, 14th on the first lap, but had been pulling through remorselessly. By the time he caught Olive with five laps to go, he had a high-class gang with him, and the Spaniard had to fight hard to maintain any sort of a place in the group. Five riders crossed the line within one second: Cecchinello, Simone Sanna (Aprilia), Olive, Stefano Bianco and Pablo Nieto (both Aprilia), with impressive Finnish rookie Mika Kallio (Honda) dropping off the back of the group for ninth, narrowly fending off the next gang, led by Mirko Giansanti. The first-lap crash had claimed Borsoi, Dovizioso and Barnnetti, with Bautista falling a little further around. De Angelis also crashed, after recovering from an earlier collision with Bianco. Poggiali extended his recently won lead from one point to 21 over Arnaud Vincent, who was 11th behind Giansanti, 111-90. Pedrosa is closing on 86, then Cecchinello (80) and Jenkner (59). Dliniel Pedrosll (Han); 3. Steve Jenkner (Apr); 4. There were a couple rookie candidates for Man of the Meeting, including John "Hopper" Hopkins, but Australian teenager Casey Stoner shaded him. After a couple of spectacular attempts, ending in equally spectacular crashes, the 16·year-old rider from Kurri Kurri, Australia, was in a pitiful condition by the time he got to Mugello two weeks ago, doing his best to ignore the pain from a broken right scaphoid. Riding with rather too much anesthetic in the joint, he crashed twice - the second time, a concussion made a significant contribution to the crash. Full marks for trying, but it was beginning to look as though the teenager, who travels with his father and mother and spent a year racing in Spain last year, might be a bit out of his depth. He was back on full try-hard form at Catalunya, saying brightly: "My wrist is hardly hurting now," but qualifying did not go especially well, and his Safilo Oxydo ApriJia was 13th on the grid, on the fourth row. Then he overheated on the grid and was left almost plum last, finishing the first lap in 19th. That's when he started to ride like a hero. Circulating almost as fast as the leaders, he was in the top 10 by half-distance, and settled back for a spell. Then he observed that he was catching the group ahead. "' pushed harder and was able to catch them," he said. By the finish, he was exhausted, but had every reason to be proud. This is a kid with a big future. Lucio Cecchinello (Apr); 5.
