CMC Skagit Powersports Pac West Nationals Round 1: Albany Motorsports Park Califomia's Evan Laughridge won the 250cc Pro class and finished second In the 125cc Pro class at the opening round of the CMC Skagit Powersports Pac West Nationals. STORV AND PHOT05 BV CLAV LIGHT ALBANY, OR, JUNE 8 ormer factory rider Ryan Huffman has been working hard lately, making a serious comeback bid, and apparently it's paying off for Roseburg, Oregon, rider. Riding a Yamaha YZ250F, Huffman scored an overall win in the 125cc Pro class at the opening round of the CMC Skagit Powersports Pac West Nationals, held at Albany Motorsports Park. Suzuki-mounted Californian Evan Laughridge, who last year solely dominated the series, joined Huffman in the Pro-class winner's circle by snaring an overall win in the 250cc Pro class via 1-3 performances. Huffman complemented his earlier 125cc win by placing second to Laughridge with 5-1 placings, while Honda rider Tony Graves (3-4) filled out the podium. Huffman (1-2), Laughridge (2-4) and Tiger Lacey (6-1) stood on the rostrum in the 125cc class. Well over 600 riders were on hand for the 17th annual CMC Pac West Nationals, traveling from as far away as Alaska and Montana, but only four riders on the day achieved doubleclass wins: Washington riders Josh Hill, Tommy Weeck and Dave Silvestri, and Oregon's Brad Frace. Oregon's Heidi Koerschgen and Thomas traded moto wins, but Thomas' second-moto win earned the 25-year-old the overall. Koerschgen (1-2), Kimberlee Niles (4-3), Jennifer Jordan (3-4) and Amy Light (6-5) followed. eN Albany Motorsports Parle Albany, Oregon Results: June 8, 2002 [Round 1 of 81 Moore (3-3), Travis Gage (5-4) and Gary Terlecki (6-5) rounded out the top five overall. McAlister, though, would later get even with Graves with an Over 30 Pro-class win. Graves grabbed the lead at the start of the first 250cc Pro moto, followed by Laughridge and Ryan Terlecki as the 28-rider field funneled into turn one. Laughridge displaced Graves shortly afterward to hold the point position. Terlecki also dropped Graves back a position and then settled into a blistering pace, although in Ryan Huffman (1121 was the overall winner in the 125cc Pro class at Albany Motorsports Part<. Tiger Lacey (2211 placed third overall. California Suzuki rider Eric McCrummer destroyed the competition in the first moto of the day, the first Before The Hill Intermediate moto, putting ground on Oregon's Ryan Huege. Things got bleak, though, for the Golden State rider in moto two, as McCrummer crashed shortly after the unleashing, greatly aiding Huege in taking the overall win. Yamaha rider Ross Johnson and Billy Boughten trailed Huege in moto two. Johnson (3-2) finished second, followed by Boughten (6-3), McCrummer (1-9) and Daniel Krick (7-5). In the Over 25 Pro class, Graves, riding a Honda CRF450R, split moto wins with Suzuki-mounted Idahoan Chaun McAlister, but Graves (2-1) won overall. McAlister (1-2), Dan the later stages Laughridge broke free from his fellow Suzuki rider to post a win. Lacey, who got an unusually poor start, would also drop Graves back a spot, but Lacey then fell with just over one lap left and Graves retook third at moto's end. McAlister rode a solid race to finish fourth, while the fastest rider throughout the moto, Huffman, charged from dead last after a first-turn crash to finish fifth, ahead of Lacey, Ryan Abrigo and AMA Supercross and National regular Jason McCormick, who finished eighth in his first race back after a five-month layoff. Moto two was again Graves' at the unleashing, but Huffman took the lead away from Graves midway through the opening lap. From that point on, Huffman and Laughridge WMN: 1. Jill Thomas (Yam); 2. This left Laughridge to fend off Graves for third, a position the Independent Race ShopjVarner/FMF/ Scott-backed Laughridge needed to guarantee an overall win. Huffman narrowly edged American Suzuki/ Answer's Lacey at the finish, winning by a wheel's length. Laughridge, though, won overall with a 1-3 tally, followed by Huffman (5-1), Graves (3-4), Lacey (6-2) and Terlecki (2-6). Huffman took command at the start of a muddy first 125cc Pro moto, followed by veterans Moore and McAlister, but Laughridge displaced the two thirtysomething riders and settled into second. Laughridge then slashed into Huffman's lead, setting up one of the day's better battles, but Huffman held off all of the Californian's challenges for his second of two moto wins on the day. McAlister finished third, ahead of McCormick, Montana's Cameron Weaver, Lacey, Moore, Garhett Carter, Paul Conner and Terlecki. Lacey's finest moments of the day came in the second moto. After a dogfight with Laughridge that lasted most of the moto, Laughridge yielded to Lacey and would trail the rider from Wolf Creek for much of the moto. Huffman came from midpack to blitz past Laugridge in an attempt to gun down Lacey, but Lacey finished a bike length ahead of Huffman at the finish. Huffman's 1-2 placings earned the Washougal Motocross.com/No Fear/Roseburg Cycle Center/Pro Circuit-backed rider the overall win. Laughridge, who went 2-4, finished second overall, trailed by Lacey (6-1), McCormick (4-3) and Weaver (5-7). The Women's class - 17 riders strong - was won overall by Yamahamounted Washingtonian Jill Thomas. cu cle n e _ sa • JUNE 26. 2002 55
