my Own Race: 250cc @ Mike laRocco The Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Journeys/ Competition Accessories rider put in an outstanding third-place ride in the first moto but was forced to pull out early in the second moto. "My wrist was pretty sore and I just pulled off," said LaRocco. "I didn't want to hurt it any worse. I made it about 25 minutes in the first moto and I started really struggling with it. It just rellily never came back. I tried, but I didn't want to hurt it - the track's pretty rough. I'll just keep plugging away and try to get up there in a couple of weeks." 11 ® John Dowd The KTM/Cemic's.com/pc Worldwide/Boston Celtics rider suffered uncharacteristically poor starts throughout the day. Dowd finished 11th in the first moto, but chllrged back in the second moto with a strong fourth-place ride. "Aside from my knee, which I twisted pretty bad last week, my starts killed me today," said Dowd. "1 was like 35th around the first tum in the first moto. I don't even remember the last time I got that bad of a start. To come back to 11th was probably a pretty good ride even without my knee injury. The only thing I'm upset about is my starts. I should have been 'on' here. If anything, I should've started up front and worked my way back. I did pretty good in the second moto, but I was still like 18th on the first lap, I think. It would have been a little easier if I hlld started up front. " 11 ® Doug Henry The Yamaha/DGY/Pro Circuit-backed former champ ignited the hometown crowd by leading each of the two National motos early on. Henry eventually finished seventh in each race. "I was really excited," said Henry. "I was just hoping for good starts today and things worked out really good. I think, in the first moto, I came around in third. or something like that. I moved into the lead on the first lap and held it for the first three laps. I was pretty pumped. I knew I had my speed there and 1know how this track works - It takes a lot out of you, so if you get away quick and find some good lines, you'll be in pretty good shape at the end." ®® Sean Hamblin Journeys/Competition Accessories' §@ NickWey Mike LaRocco throughout most of the 1l)e Mota XXX-backed Yamaha privateer crashed hard just before the halfway point in tioned Ferry, with a strong 2-2 showing. Ferry rode well throughout the day, battling with Amsoil/Dr. Martens/ first moto and Henry briefly in the second moto. Southwick marked Ferry's third podium appearance in the four outdoor races run so far this year. Tim Ferry put his powerful VZ426F thumper to good use In the deep sand. He went 2·2 on the day for second overall. "I felt pretty good," said Ferry. "Southwick is a tough track and Ricky rode really good. He even stepped it up in the second moto from the first moto. I just didn't The lone 250cc Factory SoBe Suzuki rider at Southwick suffered a poor start in the first moto, completing the first lap just outside of the top 20, but battled back for a hard-fought eighth-place finish. Unfortunately, Hamblin was forced to drop out of the second moto early on. "We just had a few bike problems," said Hamblin. "I didn't want to go too much farther. Overall, I had a good day, though. It's all learning for me. As the day goes on, I learn more and more. My goal is to finish inside the top three before the year's out. Right now, I just have to shoot for the top five - consistently. After that, everything will fall into place, I think." mota one and suffered a DNF. Wey ran 12th for the better part of the second moto before eventually dropping a spot to 13th. "I didn't get such a good start in the fITst moto," said Wey. "I was catching up, but I ended up crllshing pretty hard. It rung my bell a little bit, but I Wllnted to ride the second mota real bad. I figured that I just needed to go back out there and do the best that I could. I felt okay for a few laps, but I'm nowhere near the strength that I need to be. The track next week [Budds Creek} shouldn't be as rough, so, hopefully, I'll do good." have quite the pace to run with IIIeIowI Doug Henry couIcIn't let the SouthwIck NalIonaI pass without COI"""1lIo and the "relIrecI" farmer champ cId quite wei. He even led bolh molDs. him. The last race [at Mt. Morris] was kind of up and down, so for me to be consistent is a start. I'll just keeping plugging away in the heat down in Florida and try to go Trucks/Kawasaki's Ezra Lusk. Lusk after him." scored the holeshot in the first moto, Making his second consecutive podium appearance was Team Chevy eventually dropping back to fourth at the finish. Lusk started the second Kyle Lewis just keeps getting stronger and stronger - he landed fourth overall. cue' • n e _ lIS • JUNE 19, 2002 21
