Oak Hill Motocross Park: Blake Wharton went six for six in mota victories to win the 65cc Stock (10-11), 65cc Modified (7-11) and 85cc Stock (7-11) classes at District 41's AMA Loretta Lynn's area qualifier in Decatur, Texas. tops/Gainesville Powersports/Spybacked Hewitt finished fourth, while Rodolfo Fernandez rounded out fifth. Wharton returned three races later in the 65cc Stock (10- 11) contest and picked up a nice holeshot, in front of Fernandez, who fell after jump 1 I, which gave the number-two spot to Oklahoma's Justin Berry, who was followed by Hewitt and a remounted Fernandez. Hewitt wore Berry down and passed him on lap two just after jump eight, but Berry got Hewitt back on the next lap and held the position to the finish, followed by Hewitt, Fernandez and Blaze Blackburn. Wharton snapped up the holeshot in moto two, while Blackburn and James King went down in the first turn. Fernandez garnered second and held fast to it, as Alabama's Alex Covington secured third, followed by Hewitt, Berry, and Stratton Henson of Kansas. Hewitt tracked down Covington on lap two and passed him in section three, and on the next lap Berry got around Covington for fourth. No positions changed in the top five after that, and when the checkered flag fell, Wharton claimed his second win of the weekend. Honda of Houston/FMF/J&M Racing's James Marshall got the holeshot and set a blistering pace in the fITst 250cc Open A Pro Sport moto on Sunday, in front of Plano Honda's Adam Mennenga and NTY/Pro Circuit/No Fear-backed Edgardo Rojas. On lap two, Rojas went down in the gully off-camber, while Mennenga closed in on Marshall and took the lead. Rojas remounted, but not before Rat Cylinder Repair's Ty Conner got by him. Rojas charged on Conner throughout lap three while Mennenga established a healthy lead over Marshall. Rojas made his move at the top of lap four, but he only had half a tire on Conner before he took it back. Rojas continued his charge and made it stick to claim third in the race. Mennenga took the win by 13 seconds over Marshall, who only had three seconds on Rojas at the finish line. Conner went on to finish fourth, followed by PIN Motorsports/GKP's Michael Pray, on a borrowed Chris Torrance bike, in fifth. Rojas got the holeshot in the second moto, but Mennenga was all over him and he took the lead by going under the Costa Rican in the first section of the track through the wooded turns. By the end of lap three, Mennenga had three seconds over Rojas, who was a mere two seconds in front of Marshall. Meanwhile, Pray and Conner continued battling over fourth. Marshall made a last-lap charge on Rojas for second, but when he tried to use a bowl turn as a weapon of force to go by, his rear tire went over the edge and that cost him the pass. Marshall tried again in the off-camber just a couple of turns from the finish line, but Rojas brakechecked him, which kept him in third. Rojas won the first 125cc Pro Sport moto, beating Mennenga. In moto two, Marshall took a textbook holeshot, but Mennenga passed him for the lead. When Marshall miscued in the wooded section on lap three, Rojas passed for second, and three laps later he was all over Mennenga, bumping his back tire at the bottom of lap six, but he couldn't make the pass. Mennenga (2-1) took the overall win, while Rojas (1-2) had to settle for second. Marshall (3-3) finished up a solid third. eN Oak Hill MatacrDss Park O_r, Teus Results: May 4-5, 2002 51 STK SHAFT: I. At the checkers, it wa5 Flory, Mendez, Schiell and Sanders, and that's how they finished overall, respectively. A look down the starting line for the 50cc Open class revealed the same players from the 50cc (7-8) contest. As the gate dropped, Flory 5hot out to an early lead once again. Mendez again followed Flory through the first turn in second, Schiell was third, and little Romey Miramontes, on a Polini, held fourth. The top four did not change, and Flory cruised home for a comfortable win. Moto two had the same results, and Flory secured another overall on the day in the 50cc Open class. The 60cc action was a little fasterpaced, with a new winner emerging. Damon Iwanaga had the start in moto one, with Chris Arroyo hot on his trail. Third was Flory, and fourth was Sean Argyle. The Kawasaki-mounted Iwanaga set the pace, but Arroyo, on a KTM, kept him honest. The top four remained the same until the last lap, when Argyle, on a KTM, had problems and dropped back to ninth. The final order was Iwanaga, Arroyo, Flory, and Ryan Murphy in fourth. In moto two, Iwanaga was again in front, with Arroyo in tow. Flory was again in third, and Argyle fourth. It looked to be the same race all over again, but as they 5ay, "It's not over till it's over." Arroyo made a move on the last lap that put him in front and brought him the win and the overall for the day. The final order was Arroyo first, lwanaga, Flory, and Murphy, who made a last-minute pass of his own to take fourth. Another new rider took home a few greenbacks this week in the Dash For Cash. Honda-mounted Scotty Alves earned bragging rights for being the first Novice to win the event. The Mini Dash For Cash honors went to another Novice rider, Jack Shimonishi, who wa5 also Honda-mounted. This week's jump-contest winner was Bobby Cumbra, on a Honda. eN Mutant Motorsports Spring Series Round 3: Metcalf Motorcycle Parle Flory Fab at Metcalf By RA DY HElM SAN JOSE, CA, MAY 5 arm weather greeted riders again as they headed into round three of the Mutant Motorsports Spring Series. Track conditions were excellent, a5 wood chjps had been added to the venue's hard-packed soil. The track held up well, and riders enjoyed some new obstacles that had been added for the event. Elric Flory of nearby Tracy, California, found some fast lines and took home wins in the 50cc Open and 50cc (7 -8) classes. In the first 50cc (7-8) moto, Flory came out swinging and nailed the holeshot. R.J. Mendez tucked in W lOllS Metcalf MotDn:ycle Park San JDSe, CaJifomia behind Flory for the number-two spot, and in third was Anthony Schiell. By the second lap, Flory had already put his Polini way out front, and he was not slowing up. KTMmounted Mendez was still a solid second, and Schiell, also aboard a KTM, remained in third. Fourth place was being held by the lone Husky rider, Jeremy Sanders. With no passes or tip-overs (commonly seen during 50cc action) taking place, the top three remained the same to the checkers. Flory scored the win, Mendez was runner-up, Schiell was third and Sanders was fourth. Moto two was a carbon copy of moto one, with Flory again putting the Polini out front early. Mendez cycll!!
