CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Motocross Series Round 4: Albany Motorsports Park Y0UT2~ Jared Wood (413) and Travis McClinton (618) mix it up In the tim 80cc (9-11) moto at Albany Motorsports Park, site of round four of the CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Motocross Series. Wood won overall. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, MAY 27 Honda-mounted Byron Young showed signs of youth and bursts of energy at Albany Motorsports Park, where the rider from Northem California was one of the Memorial Day Weekend's top performers. Young carded overall wins in the eocc (12-13) and Supermini classes, winning three of four motos at round four of the CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Motocross Series. Young had stellar competition in the eocc Age Group and Supermini classes from several riders, but it was Yamaha rider Matt Wilson - the lone rider in the eocc (14-16) division . who would trail Young in all four motos; ultimately, it was Wilson who ended Young's chances at a perfect day. Wilson jumped out in front of the first Supermini moto and stayed there to the finish in one of his best outdoor performances thus far in the series. 62 JUNE 19, 2002' II: U II: I Wilson, Young, Jared Wood and Suzuki rider Ben Anglen headed the field at the end of moto one, but moto two was a different story. Young darted to the head of the field in moto two and held off all of Wilson's challenges to grab his first of two overall wins on the day. Wilson's second-place finish was good enough for second overall, followed by Blake Anglen, Ben Anglen and Stephen Butler. KTM rider Pete Sannan was also a two-class winner at Albany, posting 125cc and Before The Hill Intermediate-class wins. Sannan, in his first ride in nearly a month since injuring his arm in a bad crash at Washougal, proved he hadn't lost any speed due to the layoff. Washington's David Rose, a former top-ranked eocc rider, was on hand and looking to give Sannan some serious competition. However, it was another Washingtonian, Ross Johnson, who was Sannan's closest foe. Johnson, also a former minicycle speedster, was rid· ing the 125cc Intermediate class in "exhibition" status and trailed Sannan in both motos. Honda rider Justin Jensen, riding in the adjoined 250cc Intermediate class, trailed the duo in both motos. Johnson's official win came in the 125cc Junior class, where he led every lap of both motos. Only Doug McKuhn, who was contesting the accompanying 250cc Junior class, would keep the 14-year-old Johnson in check. McKuhn, who finished second to Johnson in both motos, snared an overall 250cc win, while Jeremy McLain, riding a Yamaha YZ426F, finished third, good for second 250cc. Rounding out the top five in the 250cc portion were Ben Sannan (3-3), Brad Batchelor (4-6) and Loren Friend (7-4). Trailing Johnson in the 125cc column were Nick Randklev and Heath Voegele. The two riders split runner· up finishes to Johnson in the two motos, but it was the 13-year-old Randklev - the youngest rider in the field - who snared second overall with 3-2 performances. Voegele's fourth· place finish in moto two left him third David Germain soared to an overall win In the Over 30 Pro class with a double-moto sweep. overall, followed by another of the multitude of out-of-staters on hand, Washington's Jason Laudermilk, and local rider Justin Rice. The day's largest class was the eocc Beginner class, which was won by Scott Roberts, on a Yamaha. Roberts roosted the competition in the first moto, where he beat his older sibling Anthony, but it was another of the many YZ pilots on hand, Glenn Prestholt, who poured it on in moto two for the win, followed by Quinn Gorst and Scott Roberts; but it was Scott Roberts (1-3) who won overall. Prestholt (4-1), Anthony Roberts (2-4), Gorst (5-2) and Blake Hall (3-5) filled out the top five. Ed Smith and David Germain squared off in the combined Over 30 Pro/Expert class. Germain got around Smith, who was the lone Expert rider, late in both motos to net the overall win. Honda rider Corey Pace landed third-place finishes both times out, which was good for second in the money class, while Husky pilot Dave Fox and Jamie Claassen finished third and fourth. A large field of Over 30 Junior riders also ran in conjunc· tion with the Pro/Expert field, and Scott Williams won overall. Williams failed to win either moto but instead took advantage of inconsistency on the part of moto winners Kyle Brooks and Tracy Mueller to post the overall victory. eN Albuy MmDrsports Pat1l AI_y, Orelan Results: May 27, 2DD2 [Raun~ 41 P/W (4-6): I.
