Smith, 22, had been unable to sleep or even do much in the last week, let alone do any real training or practicing on his motorcycle. He wasn't sick or injured, but he was hurting. "I think I have a broken heart," Smith said. Eight days before the race, he and his family buried his older brother Kip, who was killed in a construction accident back home in Idaho when a steel beam from a ceiling fell onto him. In the days that followed the funeral on June 1, Smith struggled to focus on his own racing career and the next task at hand: the notoriously rough sand of Southwick.
