"Luckily, I managed to keep the thing in tight enough that I didn't hit him that hard, but it was still quite a hairy moment." CN really drive up on guys and do something with them at the end of the straight for sure." Fergusson got tangled up with traffic late in the race and fell back to a distant third. His closest call came when he was in the lead and he rammed a back marker in the carousel. 'Illes ...... hdllrutl..... Round 5; Pikes Peak International Raceway Jimmy Moore 111 retumed to his winning ways at Pikes Peak, taking his first victory since Day1ona. Bv PAUL CARRUTHERS FOUNTAIN, CO, JUNE 1 t'S hard to believe with the performance he turned in at Pikes Peak International Raceway that Coronal EBSCO Media's Jimmy Moore hadn't won a race since the opening round of the series in Daytona. On a windy but warm day, Moore looked every bit like the defending Superstock Champion. The Oregonian controlled the race from the get-go to not only take his second win of the season, but also to inch his way back into championship contention. Moore started the race in second place, but quickly disposed of Kawasaki's Tommy Hayden, the I championship contender who would fade all the way to 19th with a pushing front tire. Once in the lead, Moore went about extending it, slowly at first, then a bit more deliberately later. Cruise America's Jason DiSalvo would keep him honest, staying within a second of Moore until the 12th lap. At that point, Moore wicked it up to stretch a lead that would grow to 3.4 seconds by the end of the 29-lap race. DiSalvo held on to second throughout, despite a lot of mid-to-Iate-race pressure from Arclight Suzuki's Craig Connell. DiSalvo, who just graduated from high school, got the better of the two in traffic and was able to finally break Connell, who settled for third place - his best effort of the season. Fourth place went to Kawasaki ZX6R-mounted Tony Meiring in what was his best ride of the year (he would do even better in the 600cc Supersport race). The youngster completed the first lap in seventh place, but he kept his head down and battled through, passing the likes of series points leader Lee Acree and Brian Parriott in the process. He ended up a rather lonely fourth, well behind Connell but with a big cushion on fifth place. That position ended up going to Shogun Motorsports' John Haner, the Texan winning a battle with Acree cue I • and his Arclight Suzuki and the Nicolodi Racing Suzuki of Vincent Haskovec. Annandale Racing's Ty Howard, Valvoline EMGO Suzuki's Chris Ulrich and White Tip Racing's Parriott rounded out the top- 10 finishers. Notably missing from the final results was Corona/EBSCO Media's Adam Fergusson, the Australian crashing out of the race early. The consistent Acree holds on to the points lead, though Moore cut 11 points from the deficit and he currently trails by 16, 145-129. Hayden slips to third in the series points with 122, three clear of Parriott's 119. Ulrich fills the top five with 108, though he is just one point ahead of the fast-closing DiSalvo, who is battling back to make up for his non-finish at Daytona. Although he was hoping for a holeshot, that honor went not to Moore but to Hayden. Moore, however, didn't have much in the way of patience and he quickly shot past Hayden heading into the carousel. "Tommy got the jump," Moore said. "' was hoping to get the holeshot, but I didn't. I didn't time the light the way I'd like to, but it seemed like Tommy was being a little bit conservative on the first lap. I didn't want to jump in front of him, make a big mistake and crash, so I gave him a lap to lead. It just didn't seem like he was doing much, so I jumped on him, put my head down and just tried to be really consistent." Hayden wasn't going anywhere because he had a front tire that was unrideable. He would eventually finish 19th after what was likely one of the longest races of his career as he fought a front-end push for the entire distance. From there, Moore just tried to be consistent - consistently fast. He started to pull away from his pursuers and was never headed again. "All weekend long, I've been hovering around low 57s, and I was just really trying to put that down every lap and get away - or at least put a pace down that nobody could move on," Moore said later. "That's what happened. It looked like these guys may have been battling and held each other up. I just capitalized on a clear track." Those guys were DiSalvo and Connell. Though they battled, Connell never got ahead of DiSalvo. Once they got into some traffic, the youngster was able to open a slight gap n • _ S • JUNE 12,2002 15
