AMAIChevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Series Round S: Pikes Peak International Raceway was moving forward. It spluttered and I had to pull in, but I'm much happier leaving here than leaving Road Atlanta [where Chandler crashed and was injured]." For Bostrom, the race was really just about maintaining his pace - and not getting into trouble with lappers. He succeeded, and the victory was his. "A lead is always nice, and you never complain about a lead," Bostrom said. "I kept trying to push the pace. The tires were good. Dunlop has given us good tires two years in a row, and we have a history on these tires last year, and we pushed real hard the whole race last year. I didn't think we were going to bum anything up, so I just kept riding the pace I like to ride. That way, I figured I could take a bit more time with the lappers. Maybe that was a bad idea in retrospect. They were still trouble." eN Pikes Peak lalIlrutionol Ilac8woy foualllin, Colo.-do Results: June Z, ZOOZ SOPERBIKE QUALIFYING: 1. Eric Bostrom (54.391); 2. Or better yet, both. At the end of a frantic 600cc Supersport final, Kawasaki had finished one-two, with Tommy Hayden winning his first race of the season to best his teammate, Tony Meiring easily the best finish of that young Californian's 600cc Supersport 12 JUNE 12,2002' cue I .. career. To make things even rosier for the Hayden clan, the youngest of the three racing brothers - Roger Lee Hayden - finished third in what was the best 600cc Supers port finish of his career. With two Kawasakis and two Haydens on the podium, fourth place fell to Blimpie Yoshimura Suzuki's Aaron Yates, the championship points leader. Yates battled front-end grip for the entire race, then survived a scare with a lapped rider that saw the Georgian make a spectacular save just to stay on top of his GSX-R600. Annandale Racing's Ty Howard and Vanmar Racing's Shane Turpin rounded out the top 10 finishers. The biggest loser in all of this was Blimpie Yoshimura Suzuki's Jamie Hacking. The South Carolinan looked to have a grip on the race early on when he crashed out of the race in the turn-three hairpin, throwing away not only a potential race win but also any real chance of a championship. The other rider who had things go wrong for him, just when it appeared he had an outside shot of catching Tommy Hayden, was Jake Zemke. The Bruce Transportation Group Honda rider was passing a lapped rider while in second place when the lapper crashed, knocking the handlebar of Zemke's CBR600F4i and ending his race. When the sun set on racing action on a hot Sunday at Pikes Peak, Yates still had his championship lead, and it's rather large. The Suzuki rider leads Tommy Hayden by 50 points, 169-119. Pridmore is third with 117 points, three clear of Hale and four ahead of Kipp. Meiring moves to sixth, one point ahead of Damon Buckmaster, who limped home to 26th with a faulty Yamaha R6. Tommy Hayden nailed the holeshot, but Hacking was on his tail and not in a waiting-around mood. On the fourth lap, Hacking shot past on the brakes into turn three. Hayden, however, wasn't letting him go anywhere, and he stuck on the Suzuki's tailpiece until they started hitting gobs of traffic on the 10th lap. At that point, Hacking got a bit of a break on his pursuers. "I got a good start - they've been really good lately," Tommy Hayden said. "It seems like I've got that part down. Hopefully, we can keep that up because it makes the first part of the race easier. I led for a little a while, and he [Hacking] came by. I was pretty happy with the pace. I didn't want get too excited and try to go too fast. It was a long race. I'd picked a
