Penn Corral Wins By DON BROWNING MEDARYVILLE, IN, MAV 19 Leisure Time suffered through two straight cancellations due to excess rainfall in the Midwest. The Leisure Time crew managed to drain the many flooded areas on the track to get it ready for a day of great racing. The Autos broke from the gate first, with Austin Putchaven powering his KTM into Victory Circle by claiming back-to-back mota wins in the Auto Two class. Justin Eger followed in second but took top honors in the Auto One class. In Auto Three action, Steven Penn took the overall victory, while a great race developed between two riders for runnerup, In the first mota, Kody Lindley took second, with Skyler Sombke third, but in the final moto, the Autos got caught in the rain. Nearly all the riders crashed at leest once, and some crashed more than once. Penn grabbed the lead from the start and immediately distanced himself from the pack. Lindley crashed on the first lap, allowing Sombke to slip into second. Lindley quickly remounted and managed to close to within a bike length at the finish. Sombke's second-place showing was the first time he had ever placed in the runner-up position. Another Auto Three rider, Jaken Deistler, did not win, but he did finish to claim his firstever trophy - despite numerous crashes in mota two. In the pits, when asked about his first race, all he would say was that he liked racing and knew he had crashed more times than his age. When asked if he wanted to race again, his only response was a large smile. The combined Heavyweight race g.ated with Kenny Honn pushing his Honda stroker into the lead, with fellow A rider Jim Royko, aboard a two-stroke Vamaha, sandwiched between another four·stroke ridden by another A rider· Midwest KTM-sponsored Michael Zylstra. At the halfway point, A rider Jason Begeske, aboard a Honda, passed Zylstra, who crashed - selting up the finishing order for moto one. Zylstra pulled a monstrous secondmoto holeshot. With first-mota winner Honn down in the first tum, Royko ensured himself the overall by maintaining second for the entire mota. Begeske claimed the final podium spot in the Heavyweight A class. James Rice, aboard a Yamaha thumper, took the overall in the Heavyweight B class with back-to-back mota wins, while Wheels-4Tots-sponsored Honda rider Chris Chicmocki claimed the top spot in the Heavyweight C class. Clint lIer finally put two great rides together to gamer a perfect score in the highly competitive Over 30 class. Roger Lange, making his first appearance at Leisure Time, was runner· up. The consensus among the riders was that the sand track was tough, but when the rajns hit briefly, the track turned into a treacherously slick, whooped-out hazard. Not only did the riders have to contend with the slick turns, but the wet sand made goggles almost useless. One of the riders stated that he used all six of his tear-offs on the first lap and finally had to discard his goggies on the second lap. Results Aura 1: I. Justin Eger (IITM): 2. Waddell Hot at Dickeyville Hillclimb BY BUD NORTHRUP DICKEYVILLE, WI, MAV 19 Todd Cipala and Harold Waddell were the most successful of the more than 100 riders attacking the 5OO-foot semi-pro hill near Dickeyville, Wisconsin, on May 19. Cipala claimed two firsts and three seconds, while Waddell claimed two wins also, with a second, a third and a fifth. Cipala's first win came in the biggest class: the 600cc Novice class, with 35 riders. He was the only rider in the class to break into the nine-second bracket, carding a 9.73·second run for the win on his 10<500. Kirk Mueller, his closest challenger, was more than a second behind him at 10.78 seconds, followed by Ernie Beckwith, Eric Wheelwright and Troy Sherwood. The second- through fifth-place riders were packed into a fifteen-thousandthsof-a-second time span; that's tightl Cipaill's second win came in the growing 600cc Four-Stroke class. He rode his Vamaha VZ426F thumper to the win in 11.98 seconds. Paul Hackbarth and Lloyd Haas also showed up with their Vamaha thumpers and took the second- and third-place money, while Chase Johnson and Waddell placed fourth and fifth. Waddell waited until the Open class to take his first win; then he had to come from behind to do it. Cipala had posted a very good 9.64-second time on his fantastic Harley and was poised for a three-win day, when Waddell blasted over the top in an incredible 9.14 seconds on his second ride to take the class win and set the fast time of the day at that point, Cipala had to settle for second place, and Lloyd Mueller Jr.. also "ding a classy Harley, claimed third with a 9.91-second time. Chad Koopsma also broke the 10-second barrier, posting a 9.99-second time on his hot-running Honda, with Chuck Neinfeldt and his fine Harley claiming fifth. Waddell got his second win in the Open 80cc shootout - the 10 fastest bikes of the day in a one· run, winner·take·all dash for cash. The Nebraska youngster beat his own fast time with a blaZing 8.91-second time for the win on his big·bore Suzuki, with Cipala his closest challenger with a 9.72-second time on his Harley. Kurt Koester, Koopsma and Kirk Mueller filled in the next three places. Cipala also set the fastest time in the 750cc Novice class on his first ride. a 9.84second run on his Kawasaki triple. In secondround action, however, Tom Daniels blistered the hill in 9.42 seconds on his triple to take the win. Kaleb Northrup, also riding a triple. took the third-piace cash, but he paid dearly for it. as his screaming machine caught a ledge with a the back wheel right at the top and endoed, slamming him into the ground and flipping end over end. Portland International Raceway Results Wertman Wins in Wintry Weather BY S,MON-P,ERRE SJ'I\ITH PORTLAND,OR,MAV 19 The moming heat race for the 750cc Superbike class wa:s run on an essentially dry track, with a slight sprinkle developing. The heat race is a short four-lap sprint to set the grid for the evening's 10-lap main. The first-lap leader was Tom Wertman, who had a sizable lead. Local class leaders John Dugan and Alan Schmidt were out of town at a national-level race, leaving Wertman unchallenged. Behind him, Josh Bryan barely led Gregory Bouwens, with Mark Gulin filling in fourth. Lap two stayed the same, with Wertman pulling a stronger lead. By lap three, Nathan Hester, who had gotten a poor start, had worked up to fourth place, on the tail of Bouwens. Hester managed to find a way by on the final lap to take third. leaving Bouwens in fourth, Gulin in fifth, and Mark Lorentz rounding out the sixbike-wide front row. The afternoon main was run on a truly dry track, but the heavy overcast and cool tern· peratures made traction difficult to predict. Early in the race, Wertman again pulled out a substantial lead - a gap of eight seconds within three laps. In second and third place were Bryan and Hester. By lap five. Hester had gotten right in Bryan's draft. Gulin, having not used tire warmers, raced cautiously for the first couple of laps. He found himself in ninth place on lap three and started working his way forward, The Bryan-vs.-Hester battle was a teammate rivalry. The two had taken a victory the day before in a four-hour endurance race. Bouwens, in fourth, had a good view of their cue I battle, but he was too far back to interact. Throughout the race. Hester pushed Bryan, but he was unable to slip by. By lap eight. Wertman was encountering lapped traffic in the 18-rider field. It didn't seem to slow him up much, as he rode on to the win. Gulin, driving hard from the ninth position, worked his way up to fifth at the finish. He shredded a new Dunlop rear tire doing it, his second for the day. • l.NI SjBK: I. Phil Holden (Hon·Yam). 2.
