CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Motocross Series Round 3: Albany Motorsports Park STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT ALBANY, OR, MAY 11-12 amaha-mounted Ryan Leach's appearances have been infrequent throughout the winter and spring, but the local rider proved he hadn't lost any speed at round three of the CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Motocross Series, where Leach snared a trio of wins at the two-day event at Albany Motorsports Park, posting a 250cc Pro-class win on Saturday. Leach then came back strong on Sunday to win the 250cc and Open Pro classes. While the event drew a large contingent of riders from all over the Northwest, it ended on a sad note, as up-and-coming 16-year-old Cody Buyas was severely injured and was flown to Portland via Life Flight with internal injuries. Buyas was one of Saturday's impressive performers, winning the 125cc Intermediate class and finishing third in the 250cc class. On a brighter note, there were several other stellar performers on the first of two days of racing. Doubleclass winners included Brad Frace, who won the Pee Wee (7-8) and 60cc Junior classes; Travis McClinton, who won the 60cc Open and 60cc Senior classes; Shawn Haberlock, who won the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini classes; Heath Voegele, who won the 125cc Junior and Before The Hill Junior classes; and Gerritt Schaffer, who won the 250cc and Up The Hill Intermediate classes. Leach's lone Saturday win came in the 250cc Pro class, where he had brutally tough competition, as Keith Kadell, winner of the previous round, was on hand. Kadell's chances for a repeat ended prematurely, though, as he was a victim of a turn-one altercation and was finished for the moto. Leach, however, won both motos by a large margin and was trailed by rookie Pro Jack Meadows in moto one. Kadell finished second to Leach in moto two, but while credited with a fourth-place fi-nish in moto one, 48 JUNE 12. 2002' cue I • Ryan Leach won three classes at the Albany Motorsports Partt's CMC doubleheader, topping the 250cc Pro class on Saturday and then adding Sunday's 250cc and Open Pro classes to his tally. Meadows' 2-3 performances netted the YZ426F rider the second-place laurels. Kadell rebounded nicely after his hard crash to win both 125cc Pro motos, finishing ahead of Tyler Fick and Ryan Metzler in moto one, and then leading Devin Watson to the finish in moto two. Cody Buyas ran amid the Pro riders in both contests to snare an overall 125cc Intermediate-class win, ahead of Kawasaki rider Daniel Harris (2-2) and Jesse Williams (3-3). Haberlock hammered the competition in his dual Saturday 80cc wins, first polishing off the competition in the 80cc Age Group divisions. Haberlock led fellow Yamaha riders Aaron McClinton and Nathan Whitlow to the finish in motos one and two, respectively, but it was McClinton's 2-3 tally that trailed Haberlock. Jared Wood and class newcomer Tyler McClinton split wins in the combined 80cc (9-11) class, with Wood winning overall. Matt Wilson was Haberlock's closest competition in the first Supermini moto, finishing some six seconds back of the rider from Portland. Whitlow trailed Haberlock in moto two, which was good for second overall to the amazing Haberlock, but ahead of Wilson (2-3), McClinton (4-4) and Wood (5-5). On Sunday, Leach's double-class decimation came to pass after his convincing four-for-four moto-win tally in the 250cc and Open Pro classes. Riding a pair of Yamahas, the Herb's Cycle Town/Axo-backed rider from Albany, Oregon, jumped out front in all four motos and was never headed. Honda rider Jason Matthews ran in close proximity to Leach in both classes, but Leach was not to be denied a win in either. n • _ s Washington's Meadows ran third in both classes, finishing ahead of Matt Williams in the 250cc Pro class to garner a pair of third-place overall finishes in his Pro-class debut. Ryan Thompson's lengthy drive from southern Oregon proved to be a beneficial one, as the 17-year-old nabbed a pair of overall wins on the day. Thompson's first of two wins came in the Before The Hill Intermediate class, where he beat Yamaha-mounted Jesse Williams and Matt Williams in motos one and two, respectively. Matt grabbed second overall, followed by Kevin Meyer (3-4), Justin Jensen (5-3) and Jesse (3-9). Thompson's 125cc win looked to be in jeopardy after a fall while trailing Suzuki rider Ryan Metzler in the first combined 125cc Pro/Intermediate moto. Thompson remounted to trail Metzler, the 125cc Pro-class winner, and Brandon Sinden at the fjnish. Moto two was also Metzler's; Thompson ran a solid second throughout to net the Intermediate win, followed by Sinden and Jesse Williams. CIIII Ryan Thompson was a double-class winner on the second of two consecutive days of racing In Albany, Oregon, snaring the Before The Hili and 125cc Intermedlate-elass overall victories.
