SHIPPENSBURG, PA, MAY 5 A pair of infrequent competitors emerged from the Baer Racing Products-sponsored short track at Shippensburg Speedway with a pair of victories. Jake Johnson, who's chasing the Grand National Rookie of the Year award (and maybe a podium), made his first local start a winning one. The Moroney's H-D/Metro Rac~ jng.com-sponsored rider put the Nort Racing Rotax into the winner's circle in the Sportsman and 600cc A final, finishing a straightaway in front of Shawn Baer both times. Meanwhile, Larry Weiss was handed the Over 40 final when race-long leader Dave Smith fell just before taking the white flag. In the Vintage class, wily veteran Weiss, riding his Triumph, gave a riding lesson to a pair of youngsters, Richard Pfanders and Michael Headman, on their IT Yamahas. Baer emerged from the second tum at the start of the Sportsman final with the lead, over Johnson, Dillon Cava and Georgie Price. As they entered the first turn on the next lap, Johnson slipped under Baer for the lead and extended it to a straight by the end. Price took over third at the end of the first lap, and Chris Kiinefelter started pounding on Price to try to get by in the latter haif of the race, to no avail.
