Mota two saw Maitlen in second, behind Rix, until he disappeared and Rodgers passed Presnell for the spot. Rodgers then went down in a corner. allowing Presnell and Peterson to get by him. Passing Peterson in the whoops, Rodgers was then all over Presnell until Presnell left the door open in a corner and Rodgers sneaked under him and back into second. Presnell finished third and Peterson fourth, in front of Yamaha rider Joey Brown. Jim Thomas, an "older" racer well known among the locals, once again took the first-place trophy for the Over 45 class. Thomas grabbed the holeshot in mota one and never looked back. Keith Gillespie put his Honda into second for a lap before Skip Mitchell got by him, also on a Honda. Gillespie hung onto third until the last lap, when Yamaha-mounted Terry Long got by him. Mark Wright fought a tough battle with two other riders but kept his Kawasaki in fifth. Thomas did it again in mota two, with Mitchell staying in second. Long and Gillespie danced back and forth several times before Long settled into third and Gillespie into fourth. with Wright once again taking fifth. In the Over 30 class, Todd Sherman put his Yamaha out in front early in both matos, but mishaps dropped him to the back of the pack. Kawasaki jockey Eric Sutton didn't wait for Sherman to go down before passing him for first in mota one. Sutton took off and stayed in first until the checkers came out. Another Kawasaki pilot, Greg Ingels, took second and never relinquished it, with Mike Forkner claiming third on his Yama- CONNIE JOHNSON OKMULGEE, OK, MAY 5 ound seven of the Oklahoma State Championship Series was held at the Field of Dreams racetrack in Okmulgee: With great weather and a great new track design, the Driggers were expecting a bigger turnout than they got, but those who showed up enjoyed a great day of racing. One who enjoyed it more than most was Kyle Bozone. Bozone put his Yamaha YZ250F out in front early in the Four-Stroke class and ran away to take the checkers in both motos. There was a battle for second between Tommy Coulter and Josh Johnson, both on YZ250Fs. In mota one, Coulter and Johnson swapped places several times before Johnson finally made a pass on the last lap and held Coulter off until he crossed the finish line. In mota two, Coulter stayed in second, behind Bozone, for the entire race, with Johnson falling to fourth, behind Yamaha rider Jeffrey Simon. Open Outlaw had another runaway winner, with Yamaha jockey Kevin Rix taking both holeshots and both mota wins. Rix did, however, have a little pressure, in the form of Brad Rodgers on another Yamaha. Rodgers couldn't make a pass on Rix in mota one and had to settle for second. Third was spoken for by Yamahamounted Curtis Peterson, after a heated battle with Kawasaki jockey Brett Fisher. Then Fisher was passed by Suzuki pilot Brent Presnell and Yamaha rider Cash Maitlen but still managed to claim fifth place after Presnell got sidelined with mechani- R ha. Forkner's teammate David Harger fought a tough battle to put his Yamaha in fifth, behind Wayne Daves' Honda. Mota two was a repeat performance. with Sherman out of the gate first and Sutton taking the lead away in the early moments of the race. Robert Wahnee put his Yamaha into second when Sherman dropped out again, with Forkner in third and Yamaha-mounted Todd Stoll finishing ahead of Daves. Ingels was out with an injured knee from a previous mota. There was a long-standing rivalry to watch as the 65 (6-8) class took off from the gate. Kawasaki jockey Justin Bogle and KTM-mounted Colt Nichols faced off again, with Bogle taking theholeshot in mota one and Nichols jumping past him on the fourth jump of the first lap. Nichols didn't give Bogle another chance to get past him but led him to the checkers. Gerrick Rea put his KTM into third, with Kawasaki jockeys Gregory Gehrer and Taylor Hooley following. Gehrer nailed the holeshot in mota two but turned the lead over to Bogle on the back side of the track. Nichols. after a midpack start, was already on Bogle's back fender by the end of lap two, while Gehrer went down at the finish line. Bogle and Nichols had a half-track lead on third-placed Ty Gorham, on a Kawasaki. Nichols charged past Bogle, who went down in the whoops on the last lap but had such a lead on third that he managed to get back under way without losing second. Gorham came across the finish Iinein third, followed by Rea and Hooley. eN Fiel~ lit anO . .I.... OId8..._ . 1InaIts: May 5, ZIDZ IRnatl 7J 50 (4-6): 1. A.J. Geomart (Pol); 2. C.J. Collins (Pol); 3. Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Rood &: MissMn'i Dirt Riden Stone Rocks Round 6 Bv WESTPHAUA,MO, MAY 5 or the second time during the 2002 Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship campaign, Dell's Honda-backed Doug Stone proved he is a force to be reckoned with for this year's championship, by taking the overall victory. Back in April, Stone won round four on a somewhat tight and technical course. This victory at round six was on a very wide-open and fast track, allowing Stone to show that he is a contender no matter what the conditions are. F Field of Dreams: Kyle Bozone was the winner In the Four-Stroke class at round seven of the Oklahoma State Championship Series In Okmulgee. 82 JUNE 5, 2002' cue I • n e _ s FRANK LEIVAN Behind Stone. in the runner-up position, was Ryan Wuebbeling. The Kawasaki rider spent considerable time leading the event and actually held a lead of more than 20 seconds going into the final lap, only to crash and lose the top spot to Stone. Chris Thiele battled with Stone early in the two-hour affair but lost touch with a couple of laps to go and settled for third. The 9.4-mile trail laid out by the Missouri Dirt Riders was a bit different than in years past and included several new open field sections. Lap
