Round 4: Batavia Motocross Park Austin Powers his ay to the Win Bv LARRV WOOSTER BATAVIA, NY, MAY 5 ound four of the WNYMA season took place at Batavia Motocross Park and immediately set yet another modern-day rider-attendance record for the track. The second annual Makita Tools-sponsored event drew 580 WNYMA riders to Batavia, New York, in beautiful Genesee County. As WNYMA announcer/guru Thomas "Yak" Threadgill simply stated, "It's like Woodstock gone wild." "Wild" aptly described the day's full-gate starts, as well as the great competition and sportsmanship displayed by riders and staff. Batavia Motocross Park owners/promoters worked again with motocross track designer Jesse Milley to alter the "2001 WNYMA Inc. Track of the Year" for the 2002 season. The most notable changes visible to the huge crowd of spectators were several new jumps, while the alterations to the old section of whoops kept the attention of the riders wanting to go fast. WNYMA Expert rider number one, Bill Silvarole, took the Open Expertclass holeshot aboard his Kawasaki, over the Batavia Motocross Parksponsored Suzuki rider Corey Kandefer in moto one. As Kandefer stayed on the throttle big-time, trying to catch Silva role early, he got hung up on the back section of the track and fell. Kawasaki rider Brian Austin capitalized on Kandefer's mishap and got by him. A great battle between Austin R and Kandefer lasted for several laps, while Silva role extended his lead out to about 10 seconds. Kandefer ended up second to Silvarole, but both Austin and Kandefer were catching Silva role when he took the checkered flag by a slight two-second lead. Moto two promised to be a barnburner, as several riders appeared to be faster than moto- one winner Sil· varole. The start proved that thinking was correct, as 10 great riders all appeared to have a chance at the extremely important holeshot. Silvarole had a slight edge when it appeared his rear tire kicked right, right into Kandefer's Suzuki, coming out of turn one. Silva role was able to catch himself, but unfortunately for Kandefer, he was now part of a threeor four-bike yard sale going into the whoops section_ Austin, Honda riders Don Schmidt and Fred Roy, and former number-one WNYMA Expertclass rider Joe Ellington, on a Yamaha, all got past Kandefer in tum one on lap one. As Silva role pushed his Kawasaki to its limits, he got past several riders, but then, on lap two, in the new whoop section of the track, his front tire betrayed him and he laid his Kawasaki down just a few feet from the first wreck. Schmidt, aboard his Honda, was incredibly fast through the whoops and made up enough time there over Austin to catch and pass him for the Open Expert moto-two victory. Austin displayed patience the whole day, taking Batavia Motocross Park: A record-breaking turnout of riders took to the track in Batavia, New York, for the fourth round of Western New York Motocross Association racing action. third in moto one and second in moto two for first overall, proving it's not enough to just be fast - one needs consistency mixed in with the speed to finish first overall. Schmidt improved his first-moto finish of fifth with the win in moto two for second overall, while Silvarole's first-moto win combined with a fifth-place finish in moto two garnered him third overall. In 125cc action, 202 riders from New York, Pennsylvania and Canada all showed up to compete in six different classes. Brandon Meier dominated the 125cc Schoolboy Band 125cc Novice classes by winning all four motos. Paul Kissig brought his Honda along to make the drive from Waterloo payoff by posting a pair of moto wins in the 16- to 24-year-old combined class. In the 125cc Amateur class, Beau Nichols and Jeremiah Ranck raced dueling Yamahas; Nichols posted two moto wins over Ranck's two second-place finishes. Casey Higgins showed everyone he had his Yamaha all dialed in by posting two moto wins in the 125cc Expert c1a5s, over Kandefer, Ellington, Austin and Kissig. Aaron Dieter and his high-flying Arkport Cyclesponsored Yamaha was noticeably missing from the line-up, as he traveled to Pennsylvania to attempt to qualify for Loretta Lynn's later this year. The usual list of rascals in the 50cc to 60cc classes again raced well in front of a record crowd at Batavia Motocross Park. Whether it was Jason Chacho, Connor Kelly, or Kyle Lentini riding, their KTMs ruled the day over 70 other riders. These young guns won't let anything shake them up, especially more riders and spectators. The WNYMA riders will return next to Batavia Motocross Park on Sunday, June 2. As interest increases in cue I e motocross racing and the weather improves, look for new record numbers of riders to be competing at these events. As my mother always said, "Prior proper planning prevents piss-poor performance, period." eN IIatovia MatDcnlss Partl IIatovia, New Yortl Results: May 5, 2002 (Roand 41 50 P/W (4-8): 1.
