the parade lap forced her to pull out the backup bike - a dependable B25 BSA, which earned her second place over Missouri rider Tony Glueck. There was a good turnout of riders in the Post-Vintage classes, on an assortment of machines. Most notable were the Rokons of Ron Sutton of Illinois and Jeff Brady of Maryland. Sutton was late off the start with a pull starter that would not recoil (ever try to bump-start a Rokon?), and Brady DNF'd due to a dead ignition. But you can't dampen the enthusiasm of a Rokon rider, and they vowed to return with these bikes to compete in the next AHRMA National cross country event, at Honda Hills Ohio in July. Sportsman-class bikes are those built before 1975. In the smaller 200cc Expert level, Steve Moore, on a Honda, stayed ahead of secondplaced rider Spencer Balentine, on a Penton, and third-placed rider James Smith, on a Can-Am. In the Intermediate portion, Bultaco jockey Bruce Patrick won, over Penton pilot Philip Schloss. Novice Dennis Jones won his first event aboard a freshly restored Penton. "I usually ride trials," Jones commented, "but this hare scrambles stuff is great fun!" In the Sportsman Open category, Expert Kawasaki rider Mark Hosbach bettered Curtis Harper, who DNF'd because his Kawasaki developed a broken expansion chamber. Uvely awards ceremonies followed the event, with AHRMA executive director Lamberth handing out plaques. Finally, goodbyes and personal challenges were made all around, and vintage bikes were loaded on pickup trucks, ending an incredible weekend in the Ozarks. eN TIle Gillum F ... AMA District 14 Michigan Hare Scrambles Series Round 2: M40 Motoplex Parlin Pairs It Up By MARK SPORE JONES, MI, MAY 5 t has been said that if you don't like the weather here in Michigan, wait for a half-hour or so; it will change. But if you wait a week, expect some big changes. In complete contrast to the first-round conditions, which were cold, muddy and raining, the weather for round two of the Michigan Hare Scrambles Series was dry, warm and dusty. None of this mattered to KTMmounted Corey Parlin, though, as the LansingCycielMooselAlpinestarslKlot z-supported rider won his second race in a row with more than six minutes to spare. The promoters laid out a competitive course, which covered the full spectrum of riding conditions that Michigan has to offer. The track included some tight woods sections mixed in with a challenging motocross track, and then routed the riders through a fifth-gear grass-track. I The Gillum Farm: "Rokon Ron" Sutton and Jeff Brady enter the hare scrambles checkpoint at the third round of the AHRMA National Cross Country Series in Ridgedale, Missouri. Seeing one Rokon Is rare enough, but seeing two at a time is extraordinary. The M40 club had a large turnout, as this was a combined race with the District 15 hare scrambles riders. Yamaha-mounted Brad Benjamin again took the Expert-class holeshot and headed into the woods with the rest of the Michigan Expert riders hot on his tail. Parlin was not interested in being patient this time around, and he took the lead early. After some early pressure from last year's series champion, Aaron Wegner, Parlin pulled away for the dominating win. Wegner rode strong after some early difficulties, settling for second overall. The race for third place featured an exciting battle between Corey Calkins and Steve Willey. The Kawasaki-mounted Willey rode strong early, leading Calkins by one minute near the halfway mark. However, Calkins is known for his laterace charges, and Willey fell victim to one that saw Calkins turning lap times faster than that of the winner, Parlin. Calkins earned a welldeserved third overall, with the always-smiling Willey less than a minute back in fourth. The top non-Expert rider came out of the Veteran class, as David Allen Racing's Clint Hammerle rode an impressive race, earning the class victory and fifth overall. After an hour and a half of battling with class rival Mark Spore, Hammerle put his head down and charged through the field, passing some of Michigan's Expert riders in the process. Shawmut Hillssponsored Spore held on to finish second in the class and earned sixth overall, behind Hammerle. The next three positions overall were filled by competitors from the Expert class, as Benjamin, Eric Dudek and Robbie Cribbs earned seventh, eighth and ninth overall, respectively. Rick Kent survived the race-long dogfight in the Senior class to earn the win and 10th overall. Kent worked his way to the front around the one-hour mark, but it wasn't easy, as early leader Rob Roy and Honda-mounted Mick Bushong had set a fast pace. Yamaha-mounted Roy slowly dropped back, leaving Bushong and Kent to sort things out. The last lap saw Kent come through scoring first, with Bushong only seven seconds back in second. The Open class also featured a close battle, as MSR-backed Scott Curtis held on to earn the win over visiting District 15 rider Brett Dubois. Using some of the most consistent lap times of the day, Dubois slowly cut into the lead that Curtis had established early in the race. "I knew he [Dubois] was close," commented Curtis. "I lost the front wheel and went over the bars on one of those rutted downhills; I thought he was going to get me there." Curtis picked up his Kawasaki and kept charging, claiming first in his M40 Motoplex: Corey Parlin showed he has no intentions of slowing down as he won the second round of the Michigan Hare SCrambles Series in dominating fashion In Jones, Michigan. ."
