Riverside MX: Kevin Knight charged strong all day long In Newton, Alabama, site of round eight of the Southeastern Motocross series. Knight captured both 125cc Money-mota wins. Southeastern Motocross Series Round 8: Riverside MX Knight, All Day Long By HUGH Knight in good shape for the win. Boutwell held third until the end of lap five, when Melton got by. Melton pushed on and missed catching Young by inches at the finish. The start of the first 250cc Money moto was a yellow blur, as Knight, Daniel Young and Brian Young led the way on their Suzukis. Brian went down and Daniel took first from Knight in the S section. Melton moved to third. On the last lap, Knight picked up the pace, jumped into the whoops and pulled alongside Daniel. He held on for a one-second win over Knight. Behind Melton, Hal Martin placed fourth. Brian Young switched to a Honda 450 for race two and led his brother and Martin. Knight mistimed the gate and started fourth, aboard a Yamaha this time. Daniel quickly moved to first, while Martin fell in a right-hander and dropped to last. Knight swept wide out of a flat turn and doubled past Brian. Using the power of his four-stroke, he was able to regain the position in the next turn. While Daniel cruised to the win upfront. Melton stayed in contact with Brian and Knight. With Knight pressing him hard for second, Brian lost traction in the high-speed section between the finish-line jump and the first turn and low-sided hard. Knight finished second, and Martin came back to pass Melton for third. The 80cc D class has been the most hotly contested class of the series. This day's race featured a four-way tie for the overall win GATLIN NEWTON, AL, APR. 14 anama City, Florida's Kevin Knight proved once again that he's as fast as any racer that's ever put a set of wheels on the sandy Riverside- MX course. In the 125cc Money/B class, Knight relinquished the lead to Brian Young and Cole Boutwell, but then came back for a 1-1 sweep. In the 250cc Money class, Knight finished a close second to overall winner Daniel Young in moto one and placed second overall for the day. The track, located alongside the Choctawhatchee River, was the site of round eight of the Southeastern Motocross Series. Knight put his Yamaha out front in the first 125cc Money/B moto, followed by John Melton and Cole Boutwell. Melton ran off the track and Brian Young took second from Boutwell. Hammering the whoop section, Brian caught Knight and grabbed the lead but then fell in a right-hander. Back out front, Knight bobbled and had Melton on his rear fender. Knight won by four seconds over Melton. Young nipped Boutwell, the first B rider, at the flag for third. Melton got the holeshot in race two but then gave the lead to Knight when he fell in turn two. Boutwell jammed past Knight in the S section for the lead. Leaping four deep into the whoop section, Knight was able to regain the point from Boutwell. Young passed Boutwell for second but then jumped a berm, leaving P 60 JUNE 5, 2002' cue I • n e _ so between the top three riders in the series - Corey Byrd, Troy Balsters and Christian Tramel - and Mill Creek Motocross' Alex McWilliams. Tramel ran his moto win streak to three in a row when he wheelied his Kawasaki down the start straight in race one and was never headed. Tramel looked good with the secondmoto holeshot, but things went downhill from there. Two falls put him back in fifth. Only a late pass on Branden Devilbiss going into a switchback put him in the hunt for the overall. His 1-4 score took fourth. In moto one, Balstecs survived a near endo when he cased his Yamaha on a double after moving into second. He recovered and closed on Tramel at the flag. In moto two, he gated sixth, then soldiered on to a thirdplace finish. His 2-3 effort was good for third overall. McWilliams started fourth in the first 14-rider moto, picked up a position, and kept his Kawasaki just ahead of a pack of riders. In moto two, he came from behind and grabbed the runner-up position. Though he never led a moto, McWilliams' 3-2 tally kept him in the hunt for the overall. He placed a solid second. Byrd bogged his Yamaha off the line in moto one and had his work cut out for him the rest of the way. He fought to get around the Kawasakis of Damien Dennis and Devilbiss and barely cracked the top five. In race two, he came off the line third and quickly moved to second. When Tramel fell, he found himself in the lead. Byrd rode on to a commanding win. His 4-] score captured the victory. eN Riverside MX Newton, Alabama Results: April 14, ZOOZ [Round 8J P/W (4·6): 1. Mid-South Championship Youth Hare Scrambles Series Round 11: Owensboro Motorcycle Club White in Front of Green for the Gold By JEFFREY KETCHUM FORDSVlill, KY, APR. 14 he last round of the Mid-South Championship Youth series was definitely interesting. After being rescheduled because of heavy rain, Mother Nature once again opened up the skies and turned the course and parking area into a muddy mess. The Mini course wound through open woods trails and across three bridges that the promoter had built to avoid the deep water. Off the start, Steven Middlebrook captured the lead, followed by Hayden Stewart and Cody Smith. Series leader Cody Schoettmer quickly worked his way through the pack and took the lead as the other riders fought the deep mud. By the second lap, Schoettmer had established a comfortable lead, and Stewart had moved into second, followed by T Smith and Middlebrook. Most of the riders struggled with the deepening ruts and slick bridge crossings. On the fourth and final lap, it was Schoettmer taking another win. Smith slipped by to claim second, leaving Stewart, Middlebrook and Anthony Ferguson to round out the top five. The Intermediate class roared off the line with Luke Robinson taking the holeshot, followed by Zachary Nash and Zach Sorrels. This order would not change as they wound their way around the slippery 1 ] /2-mile course, across a bridge to the scoring tent. Tyler Storrie, Justin Conners and Michael Lips were next through the tent as the leaders steadily pulled away. On lap three, Nash passed Robinson for the lead. The conditions were getting worse and the riders fought with slick trails and deep mudholes. On the fifth lap, Nash crossed the finish line in first, followed by
